July 29, 2024 — The Ministries of Finance and Development Planning, and Internal Affairs, with backing from the United Nations and the Government of Sweden, have begun the River Cess District Consultations aimed at crafting Liberia's National Development Plan.

The kickoff event took place at the Yarpah Town Hall in River Cess County on Monday July 29, 2024.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to develop the County Development Agendas (CDAs) and the "ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development," which will steer Liberia’s progress from 2025 to 2029.

The consultations bring together consultants from local firms and the African Development and Management Associates (ADMA), along with experts from the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning.

Engagement in these consultations includes a diverse group of stakeholders such as local chiefs, women, youths, individuals with disabilities, and students.

The primary goal is to gather their perspectives and aspirations for River Cess’s future.

Vinitta Doe of the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning underscored the importance of these consultations, stating that they are crucial for building collaboration and ensuring a unified vision for the future of River Cess and Liberia as a whole.

Following the initial consultations at Yarpah Town Hall, County Consultations are scheduled to take place from August 8 to August 15. This structured approach is designed to ensure broad and inclusive participation in shaping Liberia’s developmental strategies.

𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐛𝐨 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡, 𝐑𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐲 – A 22-year-old fisherman is reported missing in River Cess County. The man, identified as Christian Koffa was reported missing after he jumped into the Atlantic Ocean in Timbo Beach Community, Fehn River District during his routine fishing activities.

Eyewitnesses told Echo TV that Christian Koffa and 17-year-old Mark Nagba were fishing off the coast of Timbo Beach when they observed worsening sea conditions. Concerned about the escalating roughness of the water, the pair decided to jump into the ocean, presumably in an attempt to secure their vessel or avoid potential dangers.

While the teenager was recused by a passing boat shortly after the incident, Christian Koffa remains unaccounted for. Family members and community dwellers has launched a comprehensive search and rescue mission.

Local community dwellers, who could not hold back their tears, said since the incident on Thursday afternoon July 25, 2024 at about 2pm, he’s yet to be found alive or dead.

17-year-old Mark Nagba told the grieving family and community residents that Christian Koffa disappeared when the canoe was push far by the sea and there was nobody immediately to rescue him, noting that this may have apparently resulted in his downing accidentally.

Due to the situation, the community residents carried out additional search from the afternoon to the evening hours but could not find the living or dead body of Christian Koffa up to present.

All of those who went to search for the missing man returned in tears, after failing to locate the man.

However, the family members and the community promised to continue the search until the living or dead body of Christian is found.

𝐘𝐚𝐫𝐩𝐚𝐡 𝐓𝐨𝐰𝐧, 𝐑𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐂𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐲 - The Keynote Speaker at the Youths Reconciliatory Program Amos Sawmadal challenged River Cess County residents to rethink their approach to conflict management.

Speaking to an audience at the Yarpah Town Youth Center, Dr. Sawmadal emphasized the need for a shift from reactive reconciliation to proactive conflict prevention.

Dr. Sawmadal voiced concern that reconciliation efforts are sometimes used to obscure underlying confusion rather than addressing the root causes of conflict.

He warned against those relying on reconciliation to create confusion among young people of the county, asserting that it can only serve as a temporary measure to ease tensions, not as long-term solution.

“Reconciliation is not a cure-all for conflict,” Dr. Sawmadal stated. “It is crucial for citizens and stakeholders to focus on preventing conflicts from arising in the first place. True peace requires more than just addressing the aftermath; it requires a deep commitment to preventing issues before they escalate.”

The Keynote speaker’s message highlighted the importance of building trust within the community and prioritizing proactive measures to avoid potential violence.

Dr. Sawmadal urged residents to engage in open dialogue and work together to address the underlying issues that can lead to conflict and prevent it from taking place.

His address was met with a positive reception from attendees, many of whom agreed that a proactive approach to conflict prevention is essential for lasting peace in the county.
