Honoring Controversy?

Margibi University Under Fire for Bestowing Honor on Corrupt Senator Nuquay.

Margibi County – Margibi University has come under intense scrutiny after awarding an honorary title to Senator J. Emmanuel Nuquay, a member of the Margibi County legislature, amid allegations of corruption and unethical behavior.

The decision has sparked outrage among citizens and activists, who argue that the university is complicit in legitimizing a figure with a tarnished reputation.

Senator Nuquay, a sectioned senator for Margibi County, has been sanctioned for his significant corruption, including abuse of public resources through soliciting acceptance and offering bribes to manipulate legislative processes and public funding. His actions have been widely condemned as a disgrace to the county and a betrayal of public trust.

PhD candidate Foeday Zinnah, a Margibian activist, has publicly condemned the university’s decision, calling it a betrayal of public trust. “It’s inspiring to see universities around the world recognizing scholars and professors for their impactful contributions to education and society.

This kind of recognition uplifts communities and sets a standard for integrity,” Zinnah said. “But when a university bestows an honor on a politician known for corruption, it sends the wrong message.”

The university’s administration has defended the decision, stating that the honor was given in recognition of Nuquay’s contributions to the community and his role in promoting education in Margibi County. “We believe that every individual, regardless of their profession, deserves the opportunity to be recognized for their efforts in serving the public,” a university spokesperson said.

However, critics argue that the university’s decision is a political move to bolster Nuquay’s image and gain public support. Activists are calling for an investigation into the university’s decision and a reevaluation of its criteria for awarding honors.

As the debate continues, the question remains: can a university truly uphold its mission of education and integrity when it bestows honors on individuals with a history of corruption? The controversy has reignited debates about the role of institutions of higher learning in endorsing public figures, especially those with questionable conduct.

The case of Senator Nuquay serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of corruption in public office and the responsibility of institutions like universities to uphold ethical standards. As the public watches, the university faces a difficult choice: to stand by its principles or to be complicit in a system that rewards dishonesty.

Liberia: over hundreds 100 Men of Margibi Chapter of Liberia Drugs Enforcement Agency Undergo Drug Tests

KAKATA, Margibi County – A significant step towards combating drug abuse in Liberia was taken today as 100 men from the Margibi Chapter of the Liberia Drugs Enforcement Agency (LDEA) underwent drug tests at their office in Kakata, Margibi County.

In an interview with , Mr. Tarpaah Dapetar, the Office-In-Charge (OIC) of the LDEA, emphasized the importance of ensuring that all agency personnel are drug-free. He stated, “We can’t be fighting drugs and not test our guys and ourselves to know their drug status.”

Mr. Dapetar highlighted that the agency’s mission is to protect the nation from the harmful effects of drugs, and maintaining a drug-free workforce is a critical component of that mission. He urged citizens to support the LDEA in its efforts to reduce drug imports and usage in the country.

The OIC also mentioned that the agency is facing challenges related to mobility, but with the recent donation of vehicles by the national government, they are now better equipped to carry out their duties across the country.

“With these vehicles, we will be able to reach all parts of the country more quickly and effectively,” Mr. Dapetar said. “We are now in a position to take on this challenge with renewed vigor.”

The drug testing initiative is part of a broader effort by the LDEA to strengthen its capacity and ensure that its officers are fully committed to the fight against drug trafficking and abuse in Liberia.

This development marks a positive step towards enhancing public safety and reducing the impact-related crimes in the country.

Unpackaging Liberia’s Oil and Gas Exploration History, Alarming the Prospect.

By: Joe B Kamara| Sustainable Energy Campaigner |

Well, folks, it can be recalled that in 2016, close to the Liberian border with Sierra Leone, Oil was encountered in three major wells, namely: Mercury-1, Venus-1, and Jupiter-1. The lithological unit in which these discoveries were made was in a Cretaceous age stratigraphy, which Liberia shares with Sierra Leone(https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/sierra-leone-aims-be-west-africas-newest-oil-gas-exploration-frontier-2025-06-26/)

Recently, during 2012 – 2013, offshore exploration activities by giant African Petroleum through its drilling project, they encountered a net Oil Pay Volume at a depth of 32M, with a hydrocarbon stratum at a gross depth of 135M in Narina-1 (Block 9). This was indeed a breakthrough for Liberia’s Upstream Hydrocarbon Sector (https://lpra.gov.lr/exploration-history/).

Again, in 2010, Anadarko drilled another wide-cat well, encountering a huge hydrocarbon-bearing section in Montserrado-1. Another outstanding testament. Geologically, the presence of crude oil-hosting rocks, such as sandstone and dolostone, with Cretaceous-age rocks offshore the continental slope and shelf, speaks volumes for a huge commercial oil discovery. Not only that, but Liberia’s two major basins (the Harper Basin and the Liberia Basin) hold high characteristics of oil formation(https://oilprice.com/Latest-Energy-News/World-News/Liberia-Announces-Major-Offshore-Oil-Find.html).

Meanwhile, let's take a drive around the (1980s). Amoco Liberia Exploration Company was granted four offshore oil blocks for data acquisition and drilling. Of the four blocks, they drilled three wells between 1983 to 1984.

Seismic data and drill core gathered indicated again the presence of hydrocarbon.

Well, with all of this evidence of hydrocarbon presence, it is just possible, with current advancement made in technology and well-defined data interpretation equipment, a huge commercial oil discovery be made very soon. And this is everyone's prayer as a nation and that of the IOCs that have signed the 8 oil blocks, while we await more signings.

Early offshore exploration occurred between 1948-1972. During this period, the Government of Liberia awarded an exploration license to Union Carbide Petroleum Corporation, Chevron Oil Company, and Frontier International Petroleum. During their work, four blocks were drilled. The result by then shows there is no commercial volume of oil in the four blocks(https://lpra.gov.lr/exploration-history/)

To conclude, the features of Liberia’s basins and lithological characteristics, combined with its offshore stratigraphy, hold the confidence of encountering a commercial volume in this generation of experts and technological world. It is just about the work needed to arrive at the necessary output!

Thanks for following. Have a good day and a perfect weekend from my end.
