ArcelorMittal Liberia’s Yekepa Hospital recently welcomed a 15-member delegation from the United States Military Tropical Medicine (MTM) Program for an assessment visit focused on exploring opportunities for strategic academic and clinical partnerships.

Led by Liberian-born retired U.S. Navy Commander and infectious disease specialist Dr. Nehkonti Adams, the delegation selected Yekepa Hospital in recognition of its strong operational presence and high standard of healthcare delivery in Nimba County.

Receiving the delegation on behalf of AML’s corporate management, Head of Social Services Mrs. Charlesetta Peters reaffirmed the company’s commitment to building strategic partnerships that strengthen healthcare delivery and community wellbeing.

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Garfee Williams led the team on a tour of the facility, highlighting the hospital’s long-standing legacy dating back to the 1960s and its current role as a regional referral center serving employees, dependents, host communities, and patients from neighboring Guinea.

Dr. Adams expressed optimism about future collaboration, noting that AML Yekepa Hospital could serve as a partner for bilateral academic exchange, public health education, staff training, and community health initiatives.

Through strong partnerships and continued investment in healthcare, ArcelorMittal Liberia remains committed to delivering quality health services to its workforce and host communities.

Today marks another important milestone in Liberia’s human capital development as ArcelorMittal Liberia officially sent off a new batch of young Liberians under its Advanced Academic Scholarship Program.

Since its launch in 2012 under the Mineral Development Agreement, the program has supported nearly 100 Liberians, with beneficiaries studying across 16 countries and four continents in critical fields such as engineering, mining, and technology.

This initiative continues to create opportunities for young Liberians to gain international education and skills that are essential for national growth. The selection process remains highly competitive, ensuring that only the most qualified and committed candidates are chosen.

As these young scholars depart, the expectation remains clear: return home, contribute, and help build a stronger Liberia.

Illegal Construction Could Delay the Future of Yekepa by ArcelorMittal

ArcelorMittal Liberia is calling on residents, community leaders, and the Yekepa Town Council to work together to stop the growing wave of illegal construction in and around Yekepa.

Why does this matter?

AML has long-term plans to redevelop New Yekepa into a modern township with improved housing, better roads, proper drainage systems, expanded utilities, recreational facilities, and other essential infrastructure that will improve the quality of life for residents and support the region's continued growth.

However, unauthorized buildings erected within the concession threaten that vision. Illegal structures can obstruct roads, utility corridors, drainage systems, and other planned public infrastructure, increasing project costs and delaying development. In some cases, such structures may eventually have to be removed.

During a recent engagement with the Yekepa Town Council, AML urged community leaders to help educate residents, report illegal construction, and work together to protect the township's future. The company also reminded residents that buildings constructed without authorization within the concession are subject to demolition.

A modern Yekepa will benefit everyone—but achieving that vision requires cooperation from all stakeholders. Every illegal structure built today could delay the roads, homes, public services, and economic opportunities planned for tomorrow.

Let's protect the future of Yekepa by building responsibly and supporting planned development for generations to come.
