The Revolutionary National Youth League โ€“ CDC stands in solidarity with the patriotic citizens of Liberia who have gathered at the Capitol today to protest the proliferation of illicit drug trafficking and abuse.

For the past two years, the increase in drug trafficking and substance abuse has skyrocketed, leaving many communities in the capital and around the country unsafe. Liberia, once a beacon of stability, has become a hotbed for drug activity, with the country now having one of the highest rates of drug use in West Africa. A new drug called "Zombie," first discovered in 2024, has been particularly devastating to young people. According to reports, two or three out of every ten youths in Liberia use narcotic substances, and their addiction often leads to a rise in crimes such as armed robbery and theft.

Furthermore , the Revolutionary National Youth League โ€“ CDC appreciates former President George M. Weah for his commitment to the future of the nation's youth. In 2023, he boldly signed the "Controlled Drugs and Substance Bill" into law, a critical step to combat drug trafficking and abuse. However, despite this legislation, the crisis has worsened significantly under the current Unity Party government.
President Boakai and his administration have failed to combat this menace. The frequent changes in leadership at the Liberian Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) highlight a gross incompetence and a lack of political will. The President's recent call for the implementation of the drug law, while blaming the previous administration, is nothing more than a cosmetic gesture.

We challenge President Boakai to begin by enforcing the law within his own house, starting with his children, Tan Tan Boakai and Joe Boakai Jr., who have been allegedly identified as major importers and distributors of narcotic substances. We also challenge him to bring the former LDEA Director and his deputies to justice for their alleged roles in facilitating the importation of large drug shipments. The fight against illicit drugs requires practical steps and political will, not empty words from the Executive Mansion.

As thousands of Liberians march today, we stand with the mothers whose children are affected, the young people who are suffering from addiction, and the communities that have become unsafe. We condemn the hypocrisy of government officials and legislators who are joining these marches while failing to perform their duties. They have a responsibility to provide oversight and enforce the laws that protect our country from drug trafficking and abuse.

Meanwhile , as we all march today to say "NO TO DRUGS," we call for this energy to extend into our communities. We must identify the people importing drugs, expose the spots where young people are being lured, and take collective citizen action to protect our communities, our youth, and the future of our nation.

Done and issued on this 7th Day of Augus AD 2025 by the mandate of the National Executive Committee of the Revolutionary National Youth League of the Mighty Congress for Democratic Change-CDC.

The people-centered former Speaker of the 55th National Legislature of the Republic of Liberia, Honorable Cllr. J. Fonati Koffa, writes: โœ๏ธ ๐Ÿ‘‡

Todayโ€™s March Is About the Survival of our Nation ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ท

Today, courageous Liberian womenโ€”mostly mothers and parents of victimsโ€”will march to the Capitol, demanding real action against the drug crisis destroying our childrenโ€”and therefore attacking our future.

I stand with them.

During my tenure as Speaker, we created and funded a Standing Committee on Drug, Rehabilitation, and Reintegration โ€”but more must be done.

We must stop shielding the traffickers and enablers. And as citizens, we all have a duty to report those destroying our future with drugs.

I thank the organizers and open my office to their cause. We, the leaders of Liberia, must act now.

Urgent Call to Action: Combatting the Drug Crisis Affecting Our Youth

Monrovia, Liberia โ€“ In a pressing address to the nation, community leaders have raised alarms about the escalating drug epidemic that is increasingly endangering the youth of Liberia. The widespread availability and consumption of illicit substances are reaching alarming levels, prompting calls for decisive action to address this critical issue.

Authorities emphasize that immediate steps must be taken to dismantle the drug cartels responsible for the importation and distribution of narcotics within the country. This includes not only apprehending those involved in the trafficking of these harmful substances but also ensuring that consumers are provided with the necessary rehabilitation services to support their recovery.

The message is clear: every member of society, including political figures such as Joseph Boakai, must be held accountable in the fight against drug abuse. The community is urged to stand united and take a firm stance, declaring a collective "NO" to drug and substance abuse.

Efforts to combat this crisis will require collaboration between law enforcement, healthcare providers, and community organizations to create effective strategies for prevention, education, and rehabilitation.

As the youth are the future of Liberia, it is imperative that immediate measures are taken to protect them from the devastating effects of drug abuse. The time for action is now; we must come together to reclaim the safety and well-being of our communities.

The National Women's Leagues of the Movement for Economic Empowerment (MOVEE), the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), and the Citizen Movement for Change (CMC) United in Solidarity: A Call for Genuine Action Against Drugs August 7, 2025.

Monrovia, Liberia -- The National Women Leagues of the Movement for Economic Empowerment (MOVEE), the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) and the Citizen Movement for Change (CMC), stands united today in solidarity, raising our voices against the mockery of President Joseph Nyuma Boakaiโ€™s promises to rescue Liberia's youth from the scourge of addiction. His government, rife with deception, has continually failed our children while political actors engage in a dangerous charade. While mothers and fathers suffer the agony of losing their children to drugs, government officials, including the President and his children, Lawmakers, Officials of Government, LDEA, and the LNP should not be endorsing protests; they should be taking urgent, effective action.

We are alarmed by disturbing reports suggesting that Dominic Morlu, a close ally of President Boakai and his son Tantan, was arrested with over $295,000 worth of drugs but has since been secretly released. This conduct deepens our distrust in a government that claims to fight the drug crisis while protecting its allies from accountability. Furthermore, reports indicate that George Obi, infamously known as โ€œOriginal Japanโ€, a notorious drug dealer, may have been granted a โ€œpardonโ€œ as part of President Boakai's July 26 packageโ€”allegedly due to close business ties with the President's son. This represents an outrageous betrayal of the very citizens they pledged to protect.

As representatives of the Womenโ€™s League of the MOVEE, CDC, and CMC, we demand that the government recognize that the fight against drugs cannot be a mere spectacle; it must be genuine and sincere. We call upon the Director of LDEA and the Inspector General of the Liberia National Police to fulfill their duties and ensure that this battle against narcotics is not staged or dramatized for public consumption but is instead grounded in effective action.

We stand firmly in solidarity with the victims of this crisis and the thousands of families affected. We will not allow our struggle for a drug-free Liberia to be undermined by deception and political theatrics. The Womenโ€™s League of the CDC, MOVEE, and CMC will proudly stand side by side tomorrow, August 7, March, demanding accountability and real change in the fight against drugs. We call on all of our members to join this fight on August 7, 2025, as WE STAND-UP AGAINST DRUGS AND THE DECEPTIVE FIGHT AGAINST DRUGS.

Let us be crystal clear: the time for mere words is over. History will remember those who stood in solidarity with the victims and took meaningful action. Together, we will reclaim our future and protect our children from the horrors of addiction. Let this be a rallying cry for all Liberiansโ€”no more mockery, only action!

Temporary Closure of Stephen Trowen Nagbe United Methodist Church

Monrovia, Liberia โ€“ The Executive Committee of the Liberia Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church (LAC/UMC) expresses its deep concern and sorrow over the recent troubling events that have unfolded at Stephen Trowen Nagbe United Methodist Church (S.T. Nagbe UMC) in Monrovia.

The incidents of the past two consecutive Sundays including the disruption of worship, interruption of Holy Communion, and hostile behavior toward duly appointed pastors are unprecedented and deeply disappointing. These actions stand in direct opposition to the teachings of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and the values that the United Methodist Church holds sacred: peace, love, accountability, order, and mutual respect.

S.T. Nagbe UMC is not just any congregation. It bears the name of the first Liberian Bishop, Bishop Stephen Trowen Nagbe, and it is in close proximity to the seat of the Liberia Annual Conference. Its spiritual and historical importance is invaluable, making the current unrest even more grievous.
Affirmation of Doctrine
Since the conclusion of the 2020โ€“2024 General Conference of The United Methodist Church, the Liberia Annual Conference, alongside all other African conferences, has reaffirmed its position on marriage as a union between one man and one woman.

This doctrine is consistent with the Book of Discipline and Liberiaโ€™s national laws. A new Book of Discipline reflecting this affirmation is being prepared for publication.

Despite this clarity, misinformation, disinformation, and misrepresentation have spread among some congregationsโ€”causing confusion, fear, and conflict.
At S.T. Nagbe UMC, this has escalated into violent conduct, rejection of leadership, and unlawful attempts to align the church with the Global Methodist Church (GMC).While the Bishop, District Superintendent, and pastors have made repeated efforts to mediate and reconcile, a small group has continued to disrupt worship, ignore spiritual authority, and block orderly meetings, rendering further charge conferences ineffective

Executive Actions Authorized
The church premises will be sealed to protect life, property, and sacred space, pending an official investigation by Liberia Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church. Relocation of Worship: All worship and church activities are to be temporarily moved to other United Methodist churches.
โžข Disciplinary Action: Individuals involved in misconduct will face charges under paragraph 2702.1 of the Book of Discipline, with proceedings guided by paragraph 2706.
โžข Reopening Review: The Bishop, Cabinet, and appointed pastors will decide when it is appropriate to resume services at the church.
โžข Leadership Oversight: The Senior Pastor, with the District Superintendent, is authorized to appoint acting officers for all church auxiliaries during this period.
โžข Broader Use: These measures may also be applied to other UMC congregations facing similar disturbances across Liberia.

During this period, we call upon all members especially those involved in the conflict to reflect prayerfully on their actions and recommit to the teachings and governance of the United Methodist Church.
Let us not allow our differences to become weapons of division. Instead, let us pursue reconciliation, humility, and healing.

The United Methodist Church has weathered many storms. We are confident that, with God's guidance, truth, peace, and justice will prevail.

We urge all Clergy, Laity, and Church Leaders across the Liberia Annual Conference to lift S.T. Nagbe UMC in prayer and support efforts aimed at restoring peace, order, and spiritual vitality.

May God grant us the wisdom to discern His will, the peace to calm our spirits, and the strength to remain faithful through this difficult moment.

Yours in His Service,
Bishop Samuel J. Quire Jr.
