Margibi County Senator Nathaniel McGill gives his two cents on the love drama on Spoon Talk involving Richard Koon and Cecelia Koon.

“After following the marital saga on SPOON TALK and across social media, I wish to share the following thoughts:
Under Liberian law, marriage between biological siblings constitutes in**st, which is expressly prohibited. The Domestic Relations Law of Liberia (1973 Code) provides that any marriage between a brother and sister, whether of whole or half blood, is void ab initio, meaning it is invalid from the outset and has no legal recognition.
In**st is defined as a sexual or marital relationship between closely related persons, such as a brother and sister.
Beyond its prohibition under the Domestic Relations Law, in**st is also criminalized under Liberia’s Penal Law. Chapter 14 of the Penal Law, which addresses sexual offenses, specifically states under Section 14.70 that in**st is a felony of the third degree. It is therefore regarded as a serious criminal offense, with penalties that may include fines, imprisonment, or both, depending on the circumstances and applicable law.
In this context, if it were established that a public official entered into a marital or sexual relationship with a biological sister, such conduct would raise serious legal concerns under Section 14.70 of the Penal Law. Given that the Speaker is the third most powerful official in our system of government, who is being accused by a lady of a sexual marital relationship; with the Speaker acknowledging that the lady in question is his biological sister has raised a legal issue under our criminal code.
These are serious and grave issues and I hope the Speaker will provide clarity to the House of Representatives and the public. Alternatively, the House of Representatives may consider establishing an Ethics Committee or investigative panel to ascertain the facts surrounding this matter. I am very sure the Speaker himself is interested in clearing his name and maintaining public confidence.
Merry Christmas, once more.”
