LIBERIA SIGNS NATIONAL PUBLIC HEALTH LEAD PAINT REGULATION TO PROTECT CHILDREN AND PREGNANT WOMEN

On January 8, 2025, Liberia took a significant step toward improving public health as the Director-General of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL), Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan, and the Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Emmanuel Urey-Yarkpawolo, signed the National Public Health Lead Paint Regulation. The signing ceremony formalized a crucial regulation aimed at eliminating lead-based paint from the Liberian market.

The regulation was developed after extensive consultations and validation efforts, focusing on phasing out lead paint in Liberia. It includes measures for regulatory control over lead content in paints, analyzing and reporting on lead levels in paints available on the market, and raising awareness among business owners, government officials, and the general public about the harmful health effects of lead paint, especially for children and pregnant women.

This project is part of a broader initiative supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), which, on August 10, 2018, approved the strategic approach to the International Chemical Management (SAICM) full-size project. The project emphasizes promoting governments' regulatory and voluntary actions to phase out lead in paint.

In May 2019, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) initiated the regional rollout of the project in Africa with a two-day training workshop in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire.

The workshop aimed to enhance regulatory action by governments to eliminate lead in paint. Liberia’s commitment to this initiative underscores the country’s dedication to safeguarding public health and ensuring a healthier environment for future generations.
