*Amos Sawyer College Begins Thesis Defense Ahead of UL 105th Convocation*

By: Moses Kpakolo

The Amos C. Sawyer College of Social Sciences and Humanities at the University of Liberia has officially commenced thesis defense exercises for its students, as part of activities leading to the University’s 105th Convocation scheduled for early February.

The exercise kicked off on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, with the official start of Undergraduate Thesis (Capstone SOWK 404) presentations and defense under the auspices of the Amos C. Sawyer College. The event was held at the Thelma E. Duncan Sawyer Faculty Lounge in Fendall, where 18 prospective graduates from the Social Work Unit successfully defended their capstone research.

The defense was described as highly successful, marked by academic excellence, professionalism, and a stylish atmosphere. Participants were commended by members of the thesis committee and the audience for their strong presentations as well as their elegant dress and overall conduct.

The thesis defense exercise is expected to continue on Friday, January 16, 2026, at 10:00 a.m., at the same venue. Other departments that are prepared have been encouraged to submit the final versions of their candidates’ theses to the Dean’s Office for consideration ahead of Friday’s defense.

Meanwhile, the Thesis Committee has requested that the entire defense process be concluded by Wednesday, January 21, 2026, citing the limited timeframe available for the submission of final grades.

Press Statement for Immediate Release!!!

Ref: SIM’s leadership says all Liberians are welcome at the University of Liberia, and calls on the present leadership of SUP to stop being LOUD about the University of Liberia’s current state, as SUP has been that student group which has been used for decades by one administration of the Liberian government and at the University of Liberia for pretentious Renovation and Painting scheme of the nation’s first institution of Higher Education; hence, making the University now so Ineffective to achieve its Goal, and as a Pawn for extortion by Political actors of the Country!

Hello to you all fellow students, comrade and friends, fellow citizens and partners of Liberia and the Media — greetings from the Student Integration Movement (SIM)...

The University of Liberia has to be serious about monitoring the behavior of its students as it should in good faith so every student who wishes to exercise his/her Freedom of speech, or Freedom of Assembly for the Right to better Education and Conducive learning environment can do so without coming in conflict with the existing regulating Policies’ or Rules and Regulations of the institution, which apply to all bona fide students of the University of Liberia!Partiality in the ex*****on of institutional Policies, Rules and Regulations cripples and weighs an institution way down and to a very sensitive and critical point!

Student ENROLLEMENT POLICY at the University of Liberia goes beyond the acceptance of citizens of the Republic of Liberia as the only group of people who are to attain knowledge from its walls.

The Student Handbook of the University does not pick and choose. Even if certain clauses in the Student’s Handbook are changed in the future, the University MUST not be a place which embraces repeated unnecessary and uncalled-for Disruption or Obstruction of normal academic or administrative activities, whereas Instructors or Professors, whether foreigners or nationals of the Country, are hired legally to fulfil the mission and vision of making the institution “nulli secunda (second to none)”, or the “Lux in tenebris (Light in darkness)”!

Considering the foregoing, the leadership of the Mighty Student Integration Movement (SIM) hereby criticizes the Friday, January 9, 2026, ACTIONS from SUP’s leadership on the properties of the University of Liberia, as if the said properties belong to SUP! The ACTIONS from SUP’s leadership to have scattered PAINT on the properties of the University of Liberia in that manner and form, is clearly an unruly and NOT befitting act of a student group at the level of Higher Education in present day Liberia, which requires disciplinary action!

On the opposite, it is very saddened to say that no one can bet that those students will be penalized because, the people who run the “Disciplinary System” at the University of Liberia are very partial in their judgement!

For the most part, or for cordiality and respect, did SUP’s leadership at least work with the Graduate Schools’ students or the leaderships there, and was given the go ahead to spread PAINT on just any part of the Graduate Schools’ Building, which is another property of the University of Liberia? NO! Before anything like that is done, the Administration of the University of Liberia MUST be in the know, and the same also goes for the Undergraduate students because all of the buildings are all properties of the University of Liberia, not properties of an individual, or a special student group!

One may say that was a form of protest, but even protest has rules and regulations, so there is a cost to pay, when they are broken! Is Protest a wrong thing to do? NO! Protest as a whole is not wrong, and it is an everlasting foothold for persons being suppressed! However, it is what individuals do or say OUTSIDE of the LAWS, the POLICIES or the RULES AND REGULATION when exercising their RIGHTS or GRIEVEANCES through Freedom of Assembly and Freedom of Speech that turns a Protest into wrong!

Articles 15 & 17 of the 1986 Constitution of the Republic of Liberia call for Freedom of Speech and Freedom of Assembly in their orders, while Article 6 of the 1986 Constitution calls for the provision of equal access to educational opportunities and facilities to all citizens. Nonetheless, none of it, or any other parts of the Constitution thereof says that an in use educational property MUST be FORCIBLY and PHYSICALLY broken down, neither did any part of the Constitution therein says that an in use old educational property MUST be WILLFULLY and PHYSICALLY distorted for the purpose of obtaining a new version of it, or before an older version of it can be improved upon!

Unlike the Undergraduate students of the University of Liberia who have been benefitting from the TUITION-WAIVER policy of the Liberian Government since 2018, students of the Graduate and the Professional Schools’ have been paying TUITION and FEES, and they are allowed to have their own leaderships!

So, while the Graduate Building of the University of Liberia needs to be painted, or be given a facelift, the first group of students at the University who should be concerned, and who should lead the line of such advocacy are the students of the Graduate Schools’ or their leaderships because, they pay TUITION and FEES every Semester at the University of Liberia! Or is it that the Graduate Schools’ students have not been paying TUITION and FEES too? NO! They have been paying their TUITION and FEES!

In 2022, SUP soon branded its members as “FIX THE UNIVERSITY GENERATION”, upon hearing that the University of Liberia under then President Julius Julukon Sarwolo, Nelson. Jr, was about to be “renovated”. The University of Liberia received $375,000.00USD as the first portion of the $1,000,000.00USD estimated for Phase One of the “renovation work”, which purposely targeted the Capitol Hill Campus, and later on received the REST of the fundings for the “renovation work” according to President Nelson, ONLY for the MONEY to be expended disappointingly by his Administration and performing way below expectation, despite LEAVING OUT the Graduate Schools’ and the CPAV Buildings being ridiculed at the moment, as well as other Buildings!

In the end, SUP quickly positioned its members as “FIX THE COUNTRY GENERATION” to avoid being questioned or pulled into the squandering, mismanagement and unaccounted-for failed venture of Phase One “renovation" worth fundings of the University of Liberia!

Look at what is still happening at the University of Liberia! SUP has become the kind of student group at the University of Liberia that is vulnerably accessible for use by politicians who continue to serve as impediment to the growth and development of the University as well as Liberia as a country!

Did SUP’s leadership protest as a student group on Friday, January 9, 2026? YES! Was the form of Protest carried out on that day by SUP’s leadership wrong? YES! SUP’s leadership was wrong because there are RULES and REGULATIONS within the University of Liberia’s Student Handbook, which were violated on that day such as, Rules # 7 & 11 of the Student Code of Conduct of the University of Liberia, “CREATING UNREST ON CAMPUS (ACT OF HOOLIGANISM, VANDALISM AND UNREST) and HOSTILE AND DISREPECTUFUL BEHAVIOR TOWARDS UNIVERSITY AUTHORITIES” respectively!

There is a BIG difference between a student or a group of students protesting on their school campus about ill which has to do with the State in particular, from a student or a group of students protesting on their campus about ill which has to do with the Administration of the University of Liberia in particular! And there is NO conflict within the Rules and Regulations, or Policies of the University of Liberia governing the behavior of its students, or the Constitution of the Republic of Liberia on that! Therefore, students are guided by the legal efforts of those separate frameworks during a protest!

Just like Article 17 of the 1986 Constitution of Liberia, Rule #8 of the Rules and Regulations governing the behavior of students attending the University of Liberia supports DEMONSTRATION which is PEACEFUL, but warns students about NON-PEACEFUL DEMONSTRATION and its PENALTY! The University of Liberia would NOT have been considered the academic institution it is, IF it was void of the policies, or rules and regulations pertaining academe!

Thus, it is a disgraceful and a sorrowful thing that SUP severely lacks the technical know-how to organize protest ON or OFF campus without coming into direct conflict with the Rules and Regulations governing the behavior of students attending the University of Liberia, or the Constitution of the Republic of Liberia!

Moreover, the statement made by SUP’s leadership earlier LAST WEEK to disrupt academic activities amidst the University of Liberia’s FINAL EXAMS which have started, in the name of CHASING OUT officials of government who teach or attend the University, or other officials of the Liberian government that SUP as a student political party has always aligned with in shady deals, contributing to the shabby condition the University lies in nowadays, would come in straight CONTRAVENTION of RULES #10 & 11 of the Student Code of Conduct at the University of Liberia, if such happens!

Will SUP be in violation, where it forces its SELF-DETERMINED action as legal, as though it holds that kind of Authority at the University of Liberia? YES!

Is there any part of the University of Liberia’s Student Handbook that gives Authority to a particular student group to decide who is to visit the University of Liberia Campus (es)? NO!

Where is the head of the Division of Student Affairs of the University of Liberia in Mr. Sekou W. Konneh, who is bent on unprofessionalism and so compromised to doing totally otherwise than what should be done per the Student Handbook to regulate student VIOLATION and roll out PENALTY?

There, you have it. The student group in SUP which you have always favored, and make stain you and your family’s reputation for, instead of being neutral to work for all students as required of the position you occupy, is at it again! According to SUP’s leadership, it is set to break ALL of the Rules and Regulations of the University of Liberia on its own terms going forward!

What! If ONLY the University of Liberia is run administratively by strictly-disciplined academicians instead of politicians and political administrators, impunity and partiality which becloud PENALTY, whenever the institution’s Polices, or Rules and Regulations are intentionally violated, will definitely be STOPPED! SIM! OUR WAY OF LIFE! A LUTA CONTINUA!
