ADDIS ABABA, ETHIOPIA – Dr. Dougbeh Chris Nyan, Director-General of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) and current chair of Liberia's Mpox Incident Management System (IMS), is currently leading a Liberian delegation at a critical workshop organized by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The high-level workshop is focused on strategizing a comprehensive Mpox vaccine campaign for the African continent. Key objectives include assessing the current global vaccine supply and future needs to combat the ongoing outbreak, promoting robust research and development as an essential pillar of outbreak response, and championing African-led scientific innovation to prioritize vaccine production on the continent. This ambitious agenda aims to reduce dependency on external sources and bolster health sovereignty across Africa.

The Liberian delegation includes several key public health experts: Mr. Philip K. Bemah, Director of Monitoring and Evaluation at NPHIL; Mrs. Lasee Colee, Deputy Director Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) at the Ministry of Health; Mr. Jeremy S. Sesay from the WHO Liberia Office; and Dr. Bakary Sonko, the Africa CDC Country Manager for Liberia. Their participation underscores Liberia's commitment to regional health security and its proactive role in the global fight against Mpox.

Liberia has been actively engaged in Mpox response, with NPHIL having previously reported on confirmed cases and maintaining surveillance. Dr. Nyan, a globally recognized biomedical scientist, was also designated as Africa CDC's Champion of Biomedical Research for Liberia earlier this year, highlighting his and NPHIL's significant contributions to public health.

The workshop's focus on in-continent vaccine production and research aligns with broader African Union aspirations for self-reliance in health emergencies, fostering a more resilient and responsive public health architecture across the continent. Source: Informer News paper

OFFICIAL STATEMENT
By H.E. George Manneh Weah
Former President, Republic of Liberia

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Monrovia, Liberia
July 17, 2025

I wish to commend the ongoing efforts of all Liberians who continue to exercise their constitutional right to peaceful assembly and protest. In every functioning democracy, the voices of the people must be heard—and heard clearly. Every organized protest that reflects the will of the people deserves respect, protection, and attention, not intimidation, sabotage, or dismissal by the Boakai government.

Let it be known that the success of any protest is not measured by who is absent or present, but by the collective commitment of the people to speak truth to power. We are all members of various coalitions and political affiliations, but above all, we are citizens of the Republic of Liberia—a sovereign people with inviolable rights.

To the leadership of STAND headed by Mulbah Morlu and all those who continue to stand up in the wake of the Boakai government's bad governance and call for justice, accountability, and good governance, I salute your courage and resolve. Remain peaceful, remain principled, and do not lose focus. Liberia is—and must always remain—bigger than any one person, group, or political party.

Let us all stand firm in the truth:

Liberia First. Liberia Foremost. Liberia Always.

Never surrender your right to be heard. Stand up for your rights. Stand up for Liberia.

God bless Liberia

GEORGE MANNEH WEAH, Sr.
Former President of the Republic of Liberia

Monrovia - The Civil Servant Association of Liberia (CSAL) has distance itself from the ongoing July 17 protest.

CSAL in a statement issued in Monrovia today said, "it wish to categorically disassociate itself and all civil servants, including employees of public service institutions and autonomous agencies under the Government of Liberia from the protest action reportedly scheduled for July 15–17, 2025."

CSAL emphasizes that at no time was the Association consulted regarding this protest, nor has it been adequately informed about the potential impact such an action could have on civil servants, their families, and the broader national interest. “ Our decision to remain uninvolved is based on our commitment to safeguarding the livelihoods of our members and promoting stability within the public sector” the President of the CSAL Mr. Moibah K. Johnson told the media yesterday.

Mr. Johnson noted: “While we fully acknowledge and uphold the constitutional right to peaceful assembly as enshrined in Article 17 of the Constitution of the Republic of Liberia, we stress that civil servants are non-political actors. Our mandate is to deliver uninterrupted public service, consistent with the laws of Liberia and international labor protocols to which the country is a signatory”.

The CSAL, he emphasized remains focused on the professional and impartial delivery of public services to all Liberians; ensuring continued workplace stability across ministries, agencies, and commissions; advocating for workers' rights and welfare through constructive dialogue with government authorities and stakeholders; and pursuing lawful and recognized mechanisms, including international labor campaigns and legal channels, to address labor-related concerns.

Mr. Johnson: “We believe that politically motivated protests fall outside the scope of acceptable strategies for labor advocacy. Participation in such actions risks compromising the neutrality and integrity of the civil service and may undermine public confidence in our institutions”.

Accordingly, the CSAL strongly urges all civil servants, as well as our fellow trade unions and workers across both the formal and informal sectors whether in public or private employment to remain at their duty stations and avoid participation in any politically charged demonstrations. Such actions do not serve the best interests of public sector workers or the broader goals of national peace and development, he declared.

The CSAL President made it unequivocally clear that the Civil Service is not a platform for political confrontation, but a cornerstone of good governance, national unity, and progress, adding that the Association is committed to ensuring that this vital institution continues to function effectively, free from political manipulation or disruption.

“We reaffirm our dedication to professionalism, peace, and nation-building. As always, CSAL remains open to constructive engagement with the Government of Liberia and international partners to ensure the rights and welfare of all civil servants are protected and advanced” he asserted.
