Over US$12 Million Worth of Drugs Seized at Roberts International Airport by LDEA

The Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency has seized illegal narcotics valued at more than US$12 million at Roberts International Airport in what is being described as one of the country's major drug interceptions.

According to preliminary information, the confiscated drugs have an estimated street value of over US$12 million, equivalent to approximately L$2.4 billion in Liberian currency.

Authorities say the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and strengthen security at the nation's main international gateway. The seizure highlights growing concerns about the use of regional transit routes for the movement of illegal substances.

The LDEA is expected to provide further details regarding the type of drugs seized, the circumstances surrounding the operation, and whether any arrests have been made in connection with the case.

Larry G's Management Rejects JZyNo's Proposal for Deobi Meeting

The management of Liberian artist Larry G has dismissed JZyNo's suggestion for the singer to meet Nigerian artist Deobi before he leaves Liberia.

Manager Edwin Konneh Jr. said the decision was influenced by JZyNo's recent actions toward Larry G, alleging that the proposal was meant to gain public attention and benefit from the artist's growing popularity.

He also recalled a previous livestream where JZyNo reportedly refused to play Larry G's songs despite requests from fans.

Edwin said those incidents led to the decision, which has since sparked debate on social media.

LDEA Boss Raises Alarm Over Alcohol Abuse Among Security Officers

The Officer-in-Charge of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA), Deputy Commissioner of Police Fitzgerald T. M. Biago, has expressed concern over rising alcohol abuse among law enforcement personnel, linking it to the growing number of deaths within the security sector.

Speaking at the 2026 Liberia National Police Symposium at the Liberia National Police Training Academy, DCP Biago described excessive alcohol consumption as a serious health challenge and called for immediate action.

He urged security institutions to strengthen wellness programs and encourage healthier lifestyles, noting that such measures would improve officers' health, increase productivity, and help extend their lives.

The symposium is being held ahead of the June 12 graduation ceremony under the theme, “Contemporary Policing for Sustainable Peace and Community Well-Being.”

President Boakai Endorses Three Concept Notes from the Proposed Second MCC Team

June 8, 2026

Executive Mansion, Monrovia — President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has received and endorsed three Concept Notes submitted by the Compact Development Team (CDT) as Liberia advances preparations for a proposed second Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact.

The Concept Notes, presented to the President on June 3, 2026, by CDT National Coordinator Mr. Alieu Fuad Nyei and members of the team, set out Liberia’s strategic priorities to confront the binding constraint of electricity for critical industries.

The documents identify development challenges, propose practical interventions, and outline anticipated results from potential MCC investments.

The first Concept Note proposes interventions in power generation, transmission and sector governance to expand access to reliable, affordable electricity and to promote reforms that improve sector efficiency and performance.

The second Note focuses on workforce development in the energy sector, emphasizing the technical skills required to operate and sustain energy investments. The third Note targets mining governance and investment facilitation, aiming to strengthen regulatory systems and improve management of Liberia’s mineral resources.

Mr. Nyei informed the President that the proposals are grounded in MCC investment criteria, addressing root causes of economic constraints, delivering high economic returns, and reflecting strong national ownership of both problems and solutions.

President Boakai commended the CDT for its diligence, endorsed the Concept Notes, and instructed heads of agencies to work closely with the team. He directed periodic reporting on compact progress and emphasized coordinated implementation of reforms across government to sustain Liberia’s strong performance on the MCC Scorecard.

The President also directed that the Concept Note ideas be presented to Cabinet for collective endorsement as a national priority.
Representatives and heads of key government institutions central to Liberia’s electricity, workforce and mining priorities attended the presentation, demonstrating a whole-of-government approach to the compact process.

Following the President’s endorsement, the finalized Concept Notes were submitted to the MCC on Friday, June 5, 2026.

The MCC is expected to convene an Investment Management Committee meeting in late July 2026 to review Liberia’s proposed investments. A decision will be communicated to the Government of Liberia in early August 2026.

Greenville Set to Receive Electricity as Light Up Southeast Project Nears Completion

Residents of Greenville, Sinoe County, could begin receiving electricity by late June or early July 2026 as the Light Up Southeast (LUSE) Project enters its final stage.

Project engineers say major installations at the Greenville Injection Substation and Solar Farm are almost complete, with work on the Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) Station between 80 and 95 percent finished.

The project is expected to provide reliable electricity to Greenville and nearby communities while also creating training and employment opportunities for young Liberians.

Residents and business owners have welcomed the progress, expressing hope that access to electricity will improve education, healthcare, business growth, and overall living standards across southeastern Liberia.

As final works continue, anticipation is growing for the official commissioning of the project, which many see as a major step toward the region's development.
