Residents Voice Concerns Over Leadership at One Logan Town Festival

By Marcus Thomas, Reporter

Monrovia, November 7, 2024 — The One Logan Town Festival, an event initially intended to celebrate and uplift the Logan Town community, is now facing intense scrutiny from residents who claim that it has strayed from its original mission. A growing chorus of locals is expressing discontent over perceived issues of accountability and transparency within the festival’s organizing committee.

Financial reports indicate that out of the US $7,469.88 in total revenue, a staggering US $7,178.91 was spent on entertainment and merrymaking activities, leaving only US $290.97 to support any local initiatives. This allocation has sparked outrage among members, who argue that the remaining funds are insufficient for meaningful community projects.

The dissatisfaction has led to public calls for the resignation of key festival leaders, including Chairman Momodu Dukuly, Vice Chair for Finance Sensee J. Morris, and Bishop Siebo Frank. Critics assert that the festival has become a platform for personal enrichment for a select few rather than a genuine representation of community interests.

“This festival was meant to bring us together and support our local initiatives, but it feels like it’s become a vehicle for a few individuals to benefit at the expense of its members.” said a concerned resident who requested anonymity. “We need leadership that is committed to transparency and accountability.”

The growing unrest among residents underscores a larger concern about the festival’s trajectory and its implications for local development. As the event gears up for its next iteration, many community members are calling for a reassessment of its leadership and a recommitment to its foundational goals of fostering unity and support within Logan Town.

As the situation develops, it remains uncertain whether the organizing committee will heed the rising calls for change or if community members will be compelled to take more drastic measures to restore the festival’s original purpose. Once a beacon of community pride, the One Logan Town Festival now finds itself at a pivotal juncture, with its future uncertain amidst the mounting discontent.

Liberia Breaks Ground on First Solar Farm: A $90 Million Investment in Renewable Energy

By: Staff Writer

Monrovia, October 11, 2014– President Joseph Boakai has officially inaugurated Liberia’s first solar farm, a groundbreaking project valued at $90 million. The initiative, funded by the World Bank, marks a significant step in the country’s efforts to harness renewable energy and improve electricity access for its citizens.

The solar farm, which will be equipped with an impressive 30,000 solar panels, is set to be constructed on 25 hectares of land adjacent to the Mount Coffee Power Plant. Once operational, the facility is expected to generate 20 megawatts of electricity, providing a much-needed boost to Liberia’s power supply.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, President Boakai emphasized the importance of renewable energy for Liberia’s development. “This solar farm is not just a project; it is a promise to our people that we are committed to a sustainable and prosperous future. Access to reliable electricity is crucial for economic growth, education, and health services,” he stated.

The project is anticipated to be completed by August 2025, with the potential to transform the energy landscape of Liberia. It aligns with the government’s broader strategy to diversify energy sources and reduce reliance on fossil fuels, thereby contributing to global efforts to combat climate change.

Local communities are expected to benefit from the solar farm, both through job creation during the construction phase and by gaining access to cleaner, more reliable energy once the facility is operational. The project also aims to promote awareness and education about renewable energy technologies among the population.

As Liberia continues to face challenges in electricity access, the solar farm represents a beacon of hope for many. With this initiative, the government aims to pave the way for further investments in renewable energy, fostering a more sustainable and resilient future for the nation.

The groundbreaking of the solar farm is a significant milestone in Liberia’s journey towards energy independence and sustainability, showcasing the potential of renewable resources to drive development and improve the quality of life for all Liberians.

Legal Troubles Deepen for Former Finance Minister Samuel Tweah Amid Bond Controversy

By: Staff Writer

Monrovia, October 4, 2024– Former Finance Minister Samuel Tweah’s hopes for freedom may be dashed as state prosecutors raise serious concerns about the validity of an $8 million property bond he posted. Despite his efforts to secure his release, legal experts warn that the bond may not hold up under scrutiny, potentially leading to his continued detention.

Prosecutors have filed a notice of exception, challenging the legality of the bond on several grounds. They assert that the properties listed in the bond documentation are allegedly owned by Rudolph S. Cole and Refine J. Cole, raising questions about Tweah’s actual ownership and the bond’s legitimacy. The state’s legal team contends that the discrepancies in ownership documentation render the bond insufficient to secure Tweah’s freedom.

Adding to the complications, the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) has reported a lack of records to verify the ownership or the assessed value of the properties in question. The properties associated with property identification number 25115, which is central to the bond, have not been substantiated by any available documentation, further complicating Tweah’s legal situation.

As the investigation unfolds, the implications for Tweah could be severe. If the court finds the bond invalid, he may face immediate arrest, extending his legal battles and potentially leading to significant legal repercussions. The case has drawn considerable public attention, as many await the court’s decision on the matter.

Samuel Tweah, who served as Liberia’s Finance Minister, has been under scrutiny for his financial dealings during his tenure. His situation reflects broader concerns about accountability and transparency in government, as citizens demand greater oversight of public officials.

The legal proceedings are expected to continue, with the next court appearance likely to be pivotal for both Tweah and the prosecution. As the situation develops, the public remains keenly interested in the outcome of this high-profile case, which could have lasting implications for Liberia’s political landscape and governance.

President Boakai Advocates for Global Support on Poverty, Justice, and UN Security Council Bid at UNGA 79th Session

By: Staff Writer

New York, September 26, 2024 – In a powerful address at the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai called for international cooperation to combat poverty, promote justice, and garner support for Liberia’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council in 2026.

Delivering his inaugural speech at the UNGA on Wednesday, President Boakai underscored the persistent challenges of poverty that continue to afflict more than half of Liberia’s population, particularly its youth, despite nearly two decades of peace. “Despite our progress, poverty remains a significant challenge, with over half of our population living below the poverty line,” he stated, reiterating Liberia’s dedication to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aimed at eradicating poverty by 2030.

In a poignant acknowledgment of Liberia’s tumultuous history, President Boakai highlighted the establishment of a War and Economic Crimes Court as a crucial step toward justice for victims of the country’s 14-year civil conflict. This initiative aligns with the recommendations from Liberia’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and in May, President Boakai signed Executive Order 131 to formally create the Office dedicated to this transitional justice process. “Our actions align with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and we seek the support of the United Nations, partners, and stakeholders in the pursuit of justice, peace, and reconciliation,” he affirmed.

Reflecting on Liberia’s democratic advancements, President Boakai celebrated the peaceful transition of power that occurred earlier this year, marking the nation’s second such transfer since the end of the civil war. “We are gradually fostering a democratic culture, ensuring that democracy is here to stay in Liberia. Now it is time for our people to reap the democratic dividends,” he remarked.

The President emphasized his administration’s commitment to strengthening the rule of law, transparency, and accountability, which he deemed essential for sustaining peace and building a capable state.

In a strategic appeal to the international community, President Boakai urged member states to support Liberia’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council. “This year’s assembly is a pivotal moment for Liberia’s bid to ascend to the African non-permanent seat of the UN Security Council,” he stated, expressing hope for overwhelming support from member states. “We look forward to the support of member states to vote Liberia overwhelmingly to the Security Council, where we can work with other members to promote peace, justice, and security.”

As President Boakai concluded his address, his call for global solidarity resonated with the urgency of Liberia’s needs, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts to build a brighter future for the nation and its people.

IMF Approves US$209 Million Extended Credit Facility for Liberia

By Staff Writer

Monrovia, September 25, 2024 – In a significant boost for the Liberian economy, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved a 40-month Extended Credit Facility (ECF) arrangement amounting to US$209 million. The decision was made during a board meeting held on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, marking a pivotal moment in Liberia’s journey toward sustainable economic development.

Finance and Development Planning Minister Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan expressed his elation over the IMF Board’s approval, calling it a monumental step towards achieving fiscally responsible governance and sustainable growth in Liberia. “This decision reflects the IMF’s confidence in our partnership and our commitment to sound economic policies,” Ngafuan stated.

The Finance Minister attributed this achievement to a collaborative effort across the government, highlighting the exemplary leadership of President Joseph Nyumah Boakai. “This is a testament to the dedication and hard work of the entire government, and I extend my gratitude to President Boakai for his unwavering support throughout this process,” he said.

Minister Ngafuan also recognized the vital contributions of the National Legislature, the Central Bank of Liberia, the Liberia Revenue Authority, and other key stakeholders, emphasizing that their collective efforts were instrumental in bringing this program to fruition.

The approval follows a staff-level agreement reached on August 26, 2024, between IMF staff and Liberian authorities, which outlined a comprehensive set of policies aimed at supporting the ECF arrangement. This partnership is expected to facilitate economic reforms, enhance fiscal stability, and promote sustainable development in Liberia.

As Liberia embarks on this new phase of economic support, the government remains committed to implementing the necessary reforms to ensure that the benefits of this funding are realized across the nation.

The IMF’s backing not only provides immediate financial relief but also signals renewed confidence in Liberia’s economic trajectory, paving the way for future investments and growth opportunities.

The donation event, part of AGL’s corporate social responsibility initiative, included back bags, notebooks, pencils, coloring materials, and pens, aimed at supporting education in the Country.

AGL Liberia has been a cornerstone in the logistics and transport sectors for several years, providing customized solutions that assist in the socio-economic development of the country.

AGL's Regional Director for Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea, Captain Fabjanko Kokan, emphasized the importance of education during the donation ceremony.

He urged both local and foreign companies to invest in the education of vulnerable children, stating, "Education is the most powerful weapon that will change Liberia, Africa, and the world."

Kokan called upon multi-million dollar companies operating in Liberia to step up their contributions to child or children education, stressing that silence or refusal to help will not benefit society.

He highlighted the critical role companies play in fostering a productive environment for future generations especially in education.

In remarks, the Principal of Community Kids Baptist Academy, Mr. Kahien Gbuway, expressed gratitude for AGL’s support, describing it as timely.

He noted that parental contributions through school fees primarily go to teacher salaries, which limits the school's ability to maintain a conducive learning atmosphere.

Student representative Sarafina Sorsor, a 6th grader, voiced her appreciation for the generous donation, stating, “We are grateful and will remember AGL for contributing to our education.”

Captain Kokan reassured the community that Africa Global Logistics will continue its support for the Community Kids Baptist Academy and is committed to helping both the students and school administration in the future.
