New York, September 26, 2024 – In a powerful address at the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai called for international cooperation to combat poverty, promote justice, and garner support for Liberia’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council in 2026.
Delivering his inaugural speech at the UNGA on Wednesday, President Boakai underscored the persistent challenges of poverty that continue to afflict more than half of Liberia’s population, particularly its youth, despite nearly two decades of peace. “Despite our progress, poverty remains a significant challenge, with over half of our population living below the poverty line,” he stated, reiterating Liberia’s dedication to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aimed at eradicating poverty by 2030.
In a poignant acknowledgment of Liberia’s tumultuous history, President Boakai highlighted the establishment of a War and Economic Crimes Court as a crucial step toward justice for victims of the country’s 14-year civil conflict. This initiative aligns with the recommendations from Liberia’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and in May, President Boakai signed Executive Order 131 to formally create the Office dedicated to this transitional justice process. “Our actions align with the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, and we seek the support of the United Nations, partners, and stakeholders in the pursuit of justice, peace, and reconciliation,” he affirmed.
Reflecting on Liberia’s democratic advancements, President Boakai celebrated the peaceful transition of power that occurred earlier this year, marking the nation’s second such transfer since the end of the civil war. “We are gradually fostering a democratic culture, ensuring that democracy is here to stay in Liberia. Now it is time for our people to reap the democratic dividends,” he remarked.
The President emphasized his administration’s commitment to strengthening the rule of law, transparency, and accountability, which he deemed essential for sustaining peace and building a capable state.
In a strategic appeal to the international community, President Boakai urged member states to support Liberia’s bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council. “This year’s assembly is a pivotal moment for Liberia’s bid to ascend to the African non-permanent seat of the UN Security Council,” he stated, expressing hope for overwhelming support from member states. “We look forward to the support of member states to vote Liberia overwhelmingly to the Security Council, where we can work with other members to promote peace, justice, and security.”
As President Boakai concluded his address, his call for global solidarity resonated with the urgency of Liberia’s needs, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts to build a brighter future for the nation and its people.
