🌍 Strengthening Digital Rights & Security for Civil Society in Liberia

In today’s world, human rights are not only defended in communities and courtrooms — they are also defended online. 💻🔐

This week, the Campaign for Human Rights and Developments (CHRD) proudly participated in the Digital Rights Advocacy, Activism and Security Building Programme for Civil Society Organizations in West Africa, organized by the West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI) based in Ghana.

As part of an intensive four-day regional training (March 9–12, 2026) taking place across Liberia, Guinea, Ghana, Nigeria, and Côte d’Ivoire, CHRD was honored to be selected among only ten Civil Society Organizations in Liberia to participate. Two CHRD staff members represented our organization, learning alongside fellow advocates committed to protecting rights in the digital age.

During the training, participants explored critical and timely issues shaping the future of human rights and civic action online, including:

🔹 Digital security and data protection
🔹 Cybersecurity for civil society organizations
🔹 Digital incident response planning
🔹 AI and human rights implications
🔹 Phishing and social engineering threats
🔹 Digital rights advocacy and activism
🔹 Protecting civic space during internet disruptions

The sessions went beyond theory as they equipped organizations like CHRD with practical tools to protect sensitive data, strengthen digital systems, prevent and respond to cyber threats, and safeguard the rights of citizens in the digital space.

With years of experience working at the intersection of human rights and digital spaces, CHRD also contributed to discussions by highlighting key challenges facing Liberia, particularly the absence of a comprehensive Data Protection Law and an Independent Data Protection Authority.

As Liberia continues to expand its digital ecosystem, protecting people’s privacy, data, and freedom of expression online has never been more urgent.

Guided by global and regional human rights frameworks such as the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the African Union Convention on Cyber Security and Personal Data Protection, to which Liberia is a signatory, CHRD remains committed to:

✨ Promoting responsible digital governance
✨ Advancing digital rights advocacy
✨ Supporting stronger cybersecurity practices for civil society
✨ Contributing to policy conversations around data protection and digital freedoms

At CHRD, we believe human rights must be protected everywhere people live their lives including online.

The knowledge and networks gained from this programme will strengthen our ongoing efforts to promote safer digital spaces, protect civic actors, and advance human rights in Liberia’s growing digital landscape.

✨ We’re Back & the Work Continues. ✨

After the festive season, we return with renewed energy and a deeper commitment to youth-led peacebuilding as we continue the Youth Promotion Initiative Project:
“Accelerating Digital Opportunities for Youth Civic Participation as Levers for Building and Sustaining Peace in Liberia.”

With the support of UN Human Rights Liberia and funding from the UN Peacebuilding Fund, we successfully concluded the training phase of the project across five slum and impoverished communities in Lofa and Montserrado Counties, culminating in a powerful engagement in the Zinc Camp Community of Logan Town.

In Logan Town, particularly in areas with the highest concentration of zinc houses, often left out of opportunities—young people and youth groups were empowered with practical, future-facing skills on:
● Fundamental human rights, monitoring, and reporting
● Digital rights and civic participation
● Responsible use of emerging technologies, including AI
● Countering disinformation and misinformation
● Leadership, civic responsibility, and effective advocacy to influence decision-making

What made this intervention truly transformational was our community-led approach that started with entry, mapping and listening to understand real needs, and co-creating learning spaces that reflect the lived realities of young people.

Community leaders and youths expressed deep appreciation for a process that did not just “train,” but recognized, included, and invested in them.

Beyond the trainings, we have also completed wider outreach and awareness engagements in schools and intellectual forums across West Point, Clara Town, and Logan Town, extending the conversation on youth, digital opportunities, civic responsibility, and peace.

This is more than a project, it is a movement toward inclusive participation, informed youth leadership, and sustainable peace. And this is only the beginning.

📢 Youth are not just beneficiaries. They are partners. They are leaders. They are the future of peace in Liberia.

Flashback: 🟠 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence | CHRD & UN Human Rights Liberia

Unite to End Digital Violence: Protecting All Women and Children in Our Communities and Digital Space

During the 16 Days of Activism, the Campaign for Human Rights and Developments (CHRD), with the strong support of UN Human Rights Liberia, took action to confront a growing but often overlooked threat — digital violence against women and children.

Through community engagement and the production of a documentary, we amplified real voices, real experiences, and real solutions. The goal was clear: to reach a wider audience, strengthen visibility, and ensure sustainability beyond the 16 Days. By using storytelling and digital media, we are extending the conversation into homes, schools, online platforms, and policy spaces.

From cyberbullying and online harassment to exploitation and digital abuse, this initiative highlighted that violence does not stop at physical spaces. As more women and children engage online, protection, accountability, and digital literacy must keep pace.

This documentary is more than a campaign output — it is a tool for education, advocacy, and long-term impact, reinforcing the message that digital rights are human rights, and safety and dignity must be guaranteed both offline and online.

✊🏽 Together, we can create safer communities and safer digital spaces for all.

🌍 Climate Justice in Action | CHRD & ActionAid Liberia and Others

We are proud to reflect on the successful hosting and conclusion of the National People’s Climate Justice Summit 2025, held December 15-16, 2025 in partnership with ActionAid Liberia. This milestone marks our second collaboration on this important national initiative, following our partnership during the inaugural summit.

The Summit brought together 700–1,000 participants from across Liberia and the West African region — including climate justice activists, farmers, women and youth leaders, academics, renewable energy practitioners, human rights defenders, civil society actors, and state institutions. United under the theme “Just Transition: Scaling Agroecology, Clean Energy, People-Driven Climate Finance and Sustainable Solutions for Liberia,” participants engaged in bold, people-centered conversations on climate resilience and justice.

Despite contributing only 0.03% to global greenhouse gas emissions, Liberia continues to face disproportionate climate impacts affecting livelihoods, food security, coastal communities, and national development. The Summit served as a powerful platform to assess progress since last year, identify gaps, and advance concrete policy actions that place communities — especially women, youth, and smallholder farmers — at the center of climate solutions.

We commend ActionAid Liberia for its leadership and all partners and stakeholders who made this convening impactful. CHRD remains committed to amplifying public voices, strengthening accountability, and advancing climate justice through inclusive and sustainable solutions.

✊🏾 Together, we continue the work for a just and resilient Liberia.
🌱 Climate justice is people’s justice.

🌍 From Community Entry to Youth Empowerment in Lofa! ✨
Real impact is happening where it matters most — in communities often left behind.

Over the past days, our team reached Looking Town Hill Community, New Voinjama, and Bazzie Quarter — three of Lofa’s most underserved communities where social cohesion, religious tolerance, and acceptance of diversity remain real challenges.

But something powerful is changing. 🔥

Young people from Looking Town Hill Community and Bazzie Quarter have just completed an intensive two-day capacity-building training covering:

📘 Civic Education & Ethical Leadership
🕊 Human Rights Fundamentals
💻 Digital Rights & Cybersecurity
📢 Human Rights Monitoring & Reporting
🎯 Advocacy & Influencing Decision-Making
🤖 Artificial Intelligence & Emerging Technologies

These young leaders are now equipped, confident, and ready to:
✔ Multiply the impact within their communities
✔ Monitor and report human rights violations by state actors
✔ Demand accountability
✔ Lead results-oriented advocacy
✔ Promote peace, tolerance & nonviolence
✔ Champion inclusive community development

We didn’t stop in Montserrado — we took the work to rural Liberia, ensuring young people have the platforms and opportunities to learn, grow, and take ownership of development rooted in peace and human dignity.

💙 This project is proudly supported by the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights OHCHR Liberia with funding from the UN Peacebuilding Fund.

Together, we are building a generation of responsible, empowered, and peaceful youth leaders. 🌱✨

🌍 22 Years of Peace, Action & Commitment 🌍

In partnership with the Kofi Annan Institute for Conflict Transformation at the University of Liberia, we commemorated the 22nd Anniversary of the Accra Comprehensive Peace Accord (ACPA), the historic agreement that ended Liberia’s 14-year civil war and gave our nation a new beginning.

This commemoration was more than remembrance, it was a platform for solutions.
Through expert presentations, panel discussions, and working groups on Disarmament, Demobilization, Rehabilitation & Reintegration (DDRR), participants identified achievements, challenges, and clear policy recommendations that will be submitted to government, civil society, and international partners to strengthen peacebuilding and reconciliation in Liberia.

The gathering united ambassador, ministers, commissioners, civil society, academics, youth, media, and INGOs — all working with one voice: Never Again.

🕊️ Key outcomes:
✅ Shared reflections on peace gains and gaps.
✅ Dialogue on reconciliation and healing.
✅ Drafting of actionable policy recommendations for sustainable peace.

This initiative reminds us that peace is not automatic but rather built every day. As Liberians, we all have a role in safeguarding the hard-won peace and ensuring that justice, reconciliation, and national healing move from words to action.

Together, we recommit to building a peaceful, united, and inclusive Liberia. 🇱🇷
