THE ONE BASSA GATHERING

CONDOLENCE STATEMENT ON THE PASSING OF HON. JANJAY BAIKPEH

It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that, on behalf of the leadership and entire membership of The One Bassa Gathering, I extend our deepest condolences to the family, relatives, friends, colleagues, and loved ones of Hon. Janjay Baikpeh, former Superintendent of Grand Bassa County and a prominent member of The One Bassa Gathering, on the occasion of his passing.

The news of his death has brought great sorrow to the Bassa community and to all those who knew him. While every life carries its own chapters and perspectives, moments of loss call upon us to put aside our differences and remember our shared humanity.

Hon. Baikpeh was a son of Grand Bassa who served his county and became a recognizable figure in its public life. As a member of The One Bassa Gathering, he was also part of our broader effort to promote unity, togetherness, and the common interests of the Bassa people.

At this difficult moment, our thoughts and prayers are especially with his family. We pray that God will grant them strength, comfort, and the courage to endure this painful period.

We also call upon members of The One Bassa Gathering and the people of Grand Bassa to stand in solidarity with the bereaved family and to allow them the peace, privacy, and dignity they need as they mourn their loved one.

On behalf of The One Bassa Gathering, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the entire Baikpeh family.

May Almighty God comfort his loved ones and grant Hon. Janjay Baikpeh eternal rest.

After 35 Years, Liberia Reopens Embassy in India

NEW DELHI, India — Liberia has officially reopened its embassy in New Delhi after more than 35 years, restoring a resident diplomatic mission in India and marking a significant milestone in relations between the two countries.

Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti inaugurated the embassy on behalf of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. and the Liberian government during a ceremony in the Indian capital.

The embassy had been closed for over three decades because of geopolitical and national challenges, despite repeated efforts by successive Liberian administrations to reestablish a permanent presence in India.

The reopening is expected to strengthen consular services for Liberian students and citizens seeking medical treatment in India while expanding opportunities for education, scholarships and professional training.

The mission will also serve as Liberia’s primary diplomatic and economic platform in India by promoting investment, trade, technology, agriculture, infrastructure and healthcare cooperation.

Liberia’s Global Diplomatic Standing Strengthens Through High-Level Engagements

Liberia continues to strengthen its position in international affairs, with Monrovia increasingly becoming a destination for high-level diplomatic consultations on issues of global peace, security, development, and multilateral cooperation.

The latest engagement comes with the visit of Her Excellency Ambassador Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Permanent Representative of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana to the United Nations, who is seeking support for her candidacy for Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Ambassador Rodrigues-Birkett’s visit is the latest in a clear pattern. It follows the visit of Rebeca Grynspan, Secretary-General of the United Nations Trade and Development (UNCTAD), Madam Michelle Bachelet, former President of Chile, and Macky Sall, former President of Senegal, all candidates for United Nations Secretary-General who visited earlier this year. Together, these engagements point to a significant shift in how Liberia is regarded internationally, not merely as a participant in global discussions, but as a nation whose support and perspective are actively sought.

Liberia’s election to the United Nations Security Council for the 2026–2027 term, with 181 votes and the endorsement of ECOWAS and the African Union, has significantly expanded the country’s diplomatic reach and influence. As a member of the Council, Liberia is contributing directly to deliberations on international peace and security while advancing African perspectives and priorities within the multilateral system.

In recent months, Liberia has welcomed and engaged senior international figures and delegations seeking consultations on issues ranging from the future leadership of the United Nations to international peace and security. These engagements demonstrate the growing value of Liberia’s perspective and the renewed confidence in the country as a credible diplomatic partner.

This momentum will continue as Liberia prepares to assume the Presidency of the United Nations Security Council in December 2026, under the leadership of His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., President of the Republic of Liberia.

Liberia’s Security Council membership represents more than a diplomatic achievement. It provides an important platform to strengthen strategic partnerships, amplify Africa’s voice, and advance Liberia’s longstanding commitment to peace, dialogue, cooperation, and multilateralism.

CMC Political Leader Hon. Musa Hassan Bility writes ✍️

“STOP PLAYING POLITICS WITH LIBERIA’S DRUG CRISIS

The magnitude of Liberia’s drug crisis cannot be reduced to a public relations show. Drugs are destroying our young people, breaking families and threatening the foundation of our society. Yet, instead of transparency and decisive leadership, the government is floating names connected to the opposition to deflect public attention from the real issues.

The Liberian people are not stupid. If a former government official had been credibly implicated, that person would have been publicly paraded immediately. Stop the insinuations and selective leaks. Release the names, disclose the evidence and open the investigation to public scrutiny.

A vessel reportedly appeared in our waters and departed, yet the government has still not provided a clear and comprehensive account of what happened. A passing statement that the vessel is being pursued is not enough. Who owned it, what was it carrying and how was it permitted to leave?

MADAM NYANTI MUST NOT BE USED AS A DECOY

We are also fully aware of what is happening to Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti. She has performed with distinction, helped rebuild Liberia’s international reputation and remains one of the most respected officials in this administration. But because she is not part of the Unity Party’s inner political circle, she appears expendable to its propaganda machinery.

No credible evidence has been presented connecting Madam Nyanti to drug trafficking. On the contrary, available information shows that she helped secure international support for the investigation. Yet, who within the Unity Party has publicly defended her? Their silence is loud.

We have every reason to believe that the campaign to smear her is internal. It bears the markings of an inside job by the usual suspects who mastered the art of destroying people’s reputations to obtain power. But propaganda may win an election; it cannot govern a country.

Do not sacrifice Madam Nyanti. Do not use opposition figures as political cover. Give the Liberian people the truth.

We are watching. Consultations among opposition leaders and other national figures are continuing, and a concerted, lawful and peaceful public response is taking shape.

No deflection. No scapegoats. No cheap politics.

Stop playing with the lives and future of the Liberian people.”

Political Activist Ralph Raja writes ✍️

H.E Minister Sara Beslow Nyanti, who is also dean of the Cabinet, said she spoke with Stephen Miller, President Donald Trump’s homeland security adviser, using talking points supplied by Director of the Executive Protection Service (EPS) Sam Gaye, and afterward took a call from the White House Situation Room and the U.S. National Security Council.

Speaking at the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing at the Charles Gbenyon Press Conference Hall yesterday August 6, said, the deployment followed the US$19.2 million co***ne interception at Roberts International Airport.

“Until I spoke today, you didn’t even know what I was doing in this investigation,” she said. “People don’t even know I’ve been part of this investigation.”

H.E Minister Nyanti said anyone charged in the case will face trial in Liberia.

“So please don’t look for U.S. prosecution in this regard.People who violate Liberian law will be prosecuted on Liberian soil, and that only those who breach the laws of other jurisdictions, such as countries where the drugs were destined, could be tried elsewhere."

She spoke to rebut claims circulating on radio talk shows and social media that the Foreign Ministry, and she personally, approved the use of diplomatic pouches to move narcotics. She said the accusations against her date to 2023 and are not new, but their effect now is.

“What is new is the extent to which these lies undermine the fight against drug trafficking in Liberia,” adding that they undermine a credible investigation and Liberia’s standing abroad." Said Minister Nyanti.

She said, Embassies are entitled to duty-free diplomatic cargo under the Vienna Convention, and the process runs from a request to the chief of protocol, who verifies that the applicants are accredited diplomats entitled to the benefit, to the Liberia Revenue Authority, which grants the exemption.

"Shipping arrangements are handled by the missions themselves, and the ministry neither sees the consignments nor knows where they go."

Operational role of diplomatic Cargo has nothing to do with the ministry of Foreign Affairs. Aveered Minister Nyanti.

“Which embassy are you accusing? It’s not me you’re accusing. You’re targeting me, but you’re not accusing me, you’re accusing the diplomats".

H.E Minister Nyanti has put up a strong challenge to her accusers to name the mission they think moved the drugs. She was very clear that the accusations her accusers are levelling, are on Liberia's partner and not on her.

The Ministry of Justice does not investigate or arrest people simply because their names are mentioned on Facebook.

The fight against drugs is everyone's Business. Let's give the investigation a chance, and let the law takes it course.

News Update:

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has rejected allegations linking the ministry and its leadership to drug trafficking, describing the claims as false and unsupported by evidence.

The ministry said the accusations could undermine public confidence in the government's efforts to combat transnational organized crime and interfere with ongoing law enforcement investigations.

It also clarified that the use of diplomatic pouches is governed by international law and denied any involvement of diplomatic parcels or authorization by the foreign minister in the country's current narcotics investigation.

The ministry said it has been carrying out diplomatic engagements with bilateral and multilateral partners, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Morocco, Spain, Serbia, the Netherlands and the European Union, to strengthen Liberia's anti-drug investigation through technical and intelligence support.

It called on the public, media institutions and other stakeholders to provide any information that could assist the joint security forces in the ongoing investigation while urging responsible dissemination of information.

The ministry said it remains committed to protecting Liberia's national interests, strengthening international partnerships and supporting government efforts to combat illicit drug trafficking and other forms of transnational organized crime.
