Senator Wellington Geevon Smith Clarifies Resignation Reports

By: Methuselah Gaye

Cestos City, Rivercess County – Former Chair of the Rivercess County Legislative Caucus, Senator Wellington Geevon Smith, has dismissed reports circulating in some quarters that he has resigned from the caucus.

Speaking to reporters recently, Senator Smith clarified that he only stepped down from his position as chairman of the caucus, but remains an active and committed member.

According to the Rivercess lawmaker, his decision to relinquish the chairmanship was purely administrative and should not be misconstrued as a withdrawal from the caucus.

“I did not resign from the Rivercess Legislative Caucus. I only stepped aside as chairman. I was elected by the people of Rivercess County to serve them in the Legislature, not any individual or group,” Senator Smith said.

He emphasized that his decision does not affect his role or his continued participation in the activities of the caucus, stressing that he remains committed to working with his colleagues in the interest of the county.

Senator Smith further noted that collaboration and unity among lawmakers of Rivercess are essential for advancing development and addressing the needs of citizens across the county.

Agri-Liberia Launches Youth Rising Project Awareness Campaign in River Cess County

By: Methuselah Gaye

Yarpah Town, River Cess County – Agri-Liberia Incorporated, a registered non-governmental organization, has officially launched the awareness component of the Youth Rising Project in River Cess County, aiming to empower out-of-school and vulnerable youth through technical and vocational training.

The project, titled “Empowering Vulnerable and Out-of-School Youths and Addressing Sexual and Gender-Based Violence through Technical Vocational Training Institute: Fostering Inclusive and Safe Technical and Vocational Education,” is funded by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) in partnership with Agri-Liberia.

Speaking at the launch ceremony in Yarpah Town, the Chairperson of Agri-Liberia, Mr. S. Alberto Dixon, emphasized that the project is designed to increase awareness of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) opportunities in Nyorwein and Timbo communities. He added that the initiative will also support the inclusion of at-risk and out-of-school youth in vocational training, as well as address issues related to sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV).

According to Mr. Dixon, “We intend to establish and strengthen gender clubs in schools, mobilize communities to take ownership of TVET, and sensitize at least ten communities on the importance of vocational education for economic growth and youth empowerment.”

Launching the awareness campaign, James X. Posseh, an officer of Agri-Liberia, described the Youth Rising Project as a significant milestone in Liberia’s efforts to build a skilled, self-reliant youth population.
“This project is a testament to the strong partnership between the Government of Liberia, the European Union, and UNIDO,” Posseh said. “It will equip young Liberians with technical skills in fields such as agriculture, construction, and electricity—preparing them for decent jobs or entrepreneurial opportunities.”

A central feature of the project is the construction of a modern TVET center at Yarpah Town Public School, which will serve as a hub for practical skills training, development, and innovation. The center is expected to provide a conducive learning environment for youth interested in trades and technical education.

Posseh urged local residents to take ownership of the project and ensure its long-term success. “Let us work together to ensure that this TVET center becomes a beacon of hope and a catalyst for growth and development in our community,” he added.

The launch event also saw remarks from the District Education Officer (DEO) of Central C Educational District-1, Mr. Christian Wleh, who praised the initiative as a "good venture" and encouraged students and young people to embrace the opportunities it presents.

“We want our youth to think positively about the ongoing construction of the technical training center,” Wleh said. “The Ministry of Education is fully committed to working with the implementing partners to ensure the project's success.”

The Youth Rising Project is expected to play a vital role in reducing youth unemployment, addressing gender-based violence, and promoting sustainable community development through skills training and education.

Wheasay Clan, Rivercess County - The Rivercess Agriculture Cooperative Society (RACS) has officially launched the harvest of its Wheasay Rice Farm in Rivercess County, marking another major milestone in the cooperative’s effort to boost local food production and support the government’s “Liberia Feed Yourself” initiative.

Speaking during the launch, RACS Secretary-General, Mr. Alexander Gbediah Jr., described the ceremony as a significant step toward expanding agricultural productivity in the county. He said the cooperative, which was established on March 22, 2022, comprises a group of dedicated farmers who came together to promote agriculture across various communities in Rivercess.

“This is farm number two, located in Wheasay Town. As a cooperative, our goal is to expand and increase our activities across the county,” Gbediah explained. “We have farms in Kpedyu Ziah Town, James Town, Chio Town, and now here in Wheasay. This farm alone covers 25 acres of land according to the Ministry of Agriculture’s measurement standards.”

He further disclosed that 24 buckets of rice seed were planted on the farm, and about 14 portions of the rice fields are now ready for harvest. “Today officially marks the start of our harvesting season, and we will continue until the process is completed,” Gbediah added, extending appreciation to the Ministry of Agriculture’s regional and county officials for their support.

Representing the Ministry of Agriculture, Regional Agriculture Coordinator Mr. Lawrence Doe commended RACS for its commitment to advancing agriculture in Rivercess. He delivered greetings from Agriculture Minister Dr. Alexander Nueteh and Deputy Minister for Regional Development, Research, and Extension, Mr. Moses Robert Gbaryan, noting that the Wheasay harvest symbolizes the success of the government’s renewed focus on local food production.

“When the Rescue Government came to power in July 2024, we launched the ‘Liberia Feed Yourself’ agenda,” Doe said. “It means producing what we can eat to reduce our reliance on imported food. What we are witnessing here today in Wheasay is a clear example of that vision taking root.”

Doe praised the efforts of local farmers in the Southeast, emphasizing that agriculture is a key driver of national development. “It is often said that we from the Southeast are not serious about farming, but today this farm proves otherwise,” he remarked. “We will carry this message back to Monrovia — that something good and productive is happening in Rivercess County.”

He further announced that the government aims to cultivate 50,000 hectares of rice and 20,000 hectares of cassava nationwide, alongside new coconut and other crop projects already underway.

“As we move forward, let’s remember that farmers are not poor people — they are among the richest in the world,” Doe concluded. “Let us continue to work hard and make farming a success story in Liberia.”

The harvest launch brought together farmers, local leaders, agricultural officials, and members of the press, all celebrating RACS’s growing role in supporting food security and community empowerment in Rivercess County.

Cestos City, River Cess County – October 13, 2025: The Resident Judge of the Fourteenth Judicial Circuit Court in River Cess County, His Honor Judge Barwon, has sentenced 43-year-old Ayouba Sheriff to 15 years imprisonment for Unlicensed Possession of Controlled Drugs, in violation of Chapter 14, Subsection 14.89(b) of the Penal Law of Liberia.

The sentencing followed a unanimous verdict by a trial jury that found Sheriff guilty of possessing a large quantity of ma*****na without a license.

According to court records, Sheriff was arrested on September 21, 2025, by officers of the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA) at the ITI Checkpoint in Yarnee District, River Cess County. Authorities said the consignment of ma*****na in his possession was valued at two hundred forty thousand Liberian dollars (L$240,000).

Following the court’s ruling, the defendant took exception to the judgment and announced an appeal to the Supreme Court of Liberia for review of the verdict and sentence.

The case highlights the government’s continued crackdown on illegal drug activities across the country as part of efforts to combat rising substance abuse and drug trafficking.

Senator Bill Twehway Rewards Cestos High Graduates, Pledges Full Scholarship for Valedictorian

October 12, 2025, Cestos City - Rivercess County Senator Bill Twehway, a former classroom teacher turned politician, brought inspiration and joy to graduates and teachers of Cestos High School during the school’s 23rd Graduation Ceremony on Saturday, October 11, 2025.

The River Cess Senator, who once taught in the classroom before rising to national prominence, made the occasion unforgettable by announcing a full university scholarship for the class valedictorian, Miss Rachel Jiffan, at any university in Liberia — except Cuttington University. He further pledged to pay university entrance fees for all other graduates who wish to further their education.

The Senator’s gesture drew loud cheers from students, parents, and community members who described his actions as “the kind of leadership River Cess has long waited for.”

In addition to his scholarship promises, Senator Twehway presented L$100,000 to the school’s teaching staff as a token of appreciation for their dedication and hard work. Each of the 25 graduates also received a smartwatch, symbolizing time management and discipline — values the Senator said were crucial for success.

“Though my gestures may seem small, the intent behind them is much bigger,” Senator Twehway said. “Education remains the foundation for personal growth and the transformation of River Cess County.”

What makes Twehway’s gesture even more remarkable is that his commitment to education predates his senatorial victory in 2023. He has built a five-unit teachers’ quarters, paid volunteer teachers, and even joined tutorial classes for the 2024/2025 senior students, a rare act of involvement that continues to earn him admiration.

The former Assistant Education Minister and ex-Managing Director of the National Port Authority said his interventions stem from his deep understanding of the struggles teachers and students face in rural Liberia.

“I know what it means to teach in a classroom with limited resources,” he told the audience. “That’s why I will continue to stand with the education sector of River Cess.”

Senator Twehway’s consistent investment in Cestos High School — the county’s first high school — has positioned him as a beacon of hope for young people seeking educational advancement in River Cess.

As the graduates celebrated their milestone, one could sense a shared belief among parents and students alike that with leaders like Twehway, education in Rivercess is not just being spoken about, but truly being rebuilt from the classroom up.

Ministry of Health Donates Lappers to Rivercess to Boost Safe Deliveries

Cestos City, Rivercess County, October 9, 2025 - The Ministry of Health (MOH) has donated several lappers (wrappers) to the Rivercess County Health Team's Family Planning Division.
This donation is a key component of the Ministry's strategy to promote safe motherhood and significantly reduce maternal and newborn mortality rates in the region.

The lappers will serve as a powerful incentive: pregnant women who complete four or more antenatal care (ANC) visits and deliver their babies at a registered health facility will receive a lapper as an acknowledgement of their commitment to safe health practices.

Miss Doris Gizzie, County Reproductive Health Supervisor, praised the initiative, stating it is the Ministry's way of motivating mothers and inspiring others to seek facility-based care.

Gbediah Town, Rivercess County – Residents of Rivercess County are benefiting from a week-long free eye care outreach program fully sponsored by Samaritan’s Purse Liberia in partnership with New Eyesight and Medical Center.

According to Edwin S. Mata, Activities Technical Supervisor of the program, the initiative aims to screen between 800 to 900 people and conduct 150 free eye surgeries during the outreach period, which runs from October 6 to 12, 2025.

“We are actually involved in providing eye services across Liberia,” Mata explained. “For this particular program in Rivercess, Samaritan’s Purse Liberia provided the funding for us to come and identify people who have problems with their eyes, and see how best we can offer them free medical help.”

Mata noted that the outreach covers four major screening locations in the county, including the Rivercess District Referral Hospital, Gblorseo Town, ITI, and Fehn River Clinic.

He said screenings were conducted at the Rivercess District Referral Hospital on Monday and Tuesday, while the team will proceed to the remaining locations in the following days.

“Anyone diagnosed with the conditions we are targeting will be transported free of charge to the hospital for surgery and returned safely to their community,” Mata added. “We are appealing to the people of Rivercess County to take advantage of this free service. Everything we do here is completely free of cost.”

Residents have expressed appreciation for the initiative.

Matthew Zoegar, a resident of Gbediah Town, said he was grateful for the opportunity to have his eyes checked. “My eye has been giving me issues, so I came for the check-up. I appreciate the government and the health workers — they are really doing their best to help us,” Zorgar said.

Another beneficiary, Dekontee Johnson, also lauded the effort, commending the New Eyesight and Medical Center and Samaritan’s Purse Liberia for bringing such life-changing services to rural citizens.

The eye care campaign continues across Rivercess County through the week, providing much-needed medical attention to hundreds of residents who would otherwise struggle to access specialized treatment.

Wheasay Clan Rice Farm Set for Historic Harvest

By: Methuselah Gaye

WHEASAY, Rivercess – The Rivercess Agriculture Cooperative Society is set to officially launch the harvest of its Wheasay Clan Rice Farm on Wednesday, October 8, marking what many describe as a significant step toward agricultural revival in the county.

Speaking to Tech News on Tuesday, the Chairman of the Cooperative, Mr. Moses B. Goweh, said the launch represents more than just a harvest—it symbolizes hope and progress for food production in Rivercess County.

According to Goweh, the 25.5-acre rice farm was cultivated with 24 buckets of sea rice, of which 13 buckets are now ready for harvesting. He explained that the project, though promising, came with major challenges.

“At one point, the entire farm was nearly lost to fire,” Goweh said. “Labor was another serious issue—we struggled to find enough hands to keep the work going.”

The Cooperative Chairman also expressed disappointment over what he described as the limited support from the Ministry of Agriculture to local farmers in River Cess, often restricted to “a few tools and small seed packages.”

He called on the government and development partners to visit the farm and witness firsthand the county’s agricultural potential.

“If we can achieve this with limited support, imagine what Rivercess farmers can do with real investment,” he emphasized.

The rice harvest is expected to boost local food supply and contribute to economic growth through increased domestic production.

Looking ahead, Goweh revealed that the Cooperative plans to expand operations by transforming part of the farm into a pepper production center and doubling its land size from 25 to 50 acres.

He added that the group’s initiatives align with Liberia’s national agricultural development goals, noting that the project has already drawn interest from the Ministry of Agriculture and international partners.

The official harvest ceremony will take place tomorrow, October 8, in Wheasay, signaling a proud moment for Rivercess County and a renewed drive for Liberia’s agriculture sector.
