River Gee Technical College Celebrates First Graduates: A New Workforce for Liberia's Future

RIVER GEE COUNTY— In a historic ceremony marking a turning point for technical education in River Gee County, Deputy Minister for Budget and Development Planning, Hon. Tanneh G. Brunson, has hailed the innaugural graduates of River Gee Technical College to see themselves as "problem-solvers, role models, and contributors to national growth."

The event celebrated 203 pioneers—the first cohort to complete the college's market-driven technical education program - signaling the birth of a new workforce armed with practical skills to drive Liberia's development.

"Today is not just a ceremony," Brunson reflected. "It is a milestone event that marks the successful completion of a journey defined by commitment, discipline, and the courage to seize it.

"Your training has been market-driven and is nationally relevant," Brunson told the graduates. "You therefore, are not just job seekers—you are solution providers."

"You are now equipped not only with knowledge, but with skills and the ability to do, to build, to fix, to create, and to solve"

Addressing the graduates at the ceremony, Brunson urged them to view their certificates as a "license to begin, not a final destination."

She acknowledged their deliberate choice to pursue technical and vocational training in an era when many follow purely academic pathways.

"We live in a time of rapid changes, especially in this era of technology," she said. "You have made strategic decisions to acquire practical, marketable, and industry-relevant skills—and gained valuable experience along the way."

Brunson emphasized that competence builds confidence, and confidence builds credibility—qualities that are increasingly essential as young people face evolving global challenges including climate change, health epidemics, cybersecurity, and sustainable development. She noted that cross-functional skills like teamwork, critical thinking, and flexibility are now also indispensable.

While academic skills remain paramount, she added, alone, they are no longer sufficient. From artificial intelligence to cryptocurrency and the evolving digital economy bring both opportunities and disruptions, as a result of—job automation, market volatility, and privacy violations. "Each of you must be prepared to tackle these new world issues," she said.

The Deputy Minister closed with a charge to the graduates: "Go out there and be bold and courageous. And when you get there, remember to — pull someone else up behind you because the fruits of life are sweeter when shared."

The ceremony was graced by Senator Francis S. Dopoh II, River Gee County President Hon. Mr. Jerry Bleh, along with faculty, proud parents, and national education leaders.

With this first graduating class, River Gee Technical College has established itself as a key institution for developing the skilled workforce Liberia needs to grow—and is a powerful reminder that leadership belongs to those who take it.

Business Executive Applauds Boakai’s Use of Taxpayer Funds
—Urges Greater Tax Compliance to Drive Development
Prominent Liberian businessman Fumba Trawally has praised President Joseph Nyuma Boakai Sr. and his administration for what he described as the prudent use of taxpayer resources to fund critical national development projects, while calling on entrepreneurs and business owners across the country to support the government's development agenda through increased tax compliance.
Mr. Trawally, who serves as Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Liberia National Toiletries Inc., a company valued at approximately US$2.5 million, and Board Chairman of the Concerned Liberians International Business Organization (COLINBO), made the remarks shortly after attending the commissioning of Liberia’s first-ever solar power plant on Friday, June 5, 2026, in Harrisburg, Montserrado County.
The commissioning of the landmark renewable energy project has been widely regarded as a significant step in Liberia’s efforts to expand access to reliable electricity, promote clean energy solutions, and accelerate economic growth through improved infrastructure.
Speaking following the ceremony, Mr. Trawally expressed satisfaction with the direction of the country's development under President Boakai’s leadership, noting that visible investments in infrastructure and public services demonstrate that taxpayers’ money is being utilized for projects that directly benefit Liberian citizens.
He described the solar power plant as a practical example of how government revenue can be transformed into meaningful development initiatives capable of improving lives and supporting long-term national progress.
“I am delighted to see that the Government is using taxpayers’ money wisely for the benefit of the country as a whole,” Mr. Trawally stated.
According to him, the successful implementation of projects such as the solar power facility should encourage greater confidence among Liberians that public resources can be managed responsibly to produce tangible results.
The businessman noted that the commissioning of Liberia’s first solar power plant represents more than just an energy investment. He said it demonstrates the government's commitment to modernizing infrastructure, promoting sustainable development, and creating conditions necessary for economic expansion and private sector growth.
Mr. Trawally further observed that access to reliable electricity remains one of the most critical requirements for industrial development, job creation, and improved living standards. He said initiatives aimed at strengthening the country's energy sector will contribute significantly to attracting investment and supporting local businesses.
While commending the government for its development efforts, he emphasized that sustainable national progress requires a strong partnership between the public and private sectors.
He therefore called on business owners, entrepreneurs, and corporate institutions to fulfill their tax obligations, stressing that taxes remain the foundation upon which governments finance roads, schools, hospitals, energy projects, and other essential public services.
According to him, greater tax compliance would provide the government with additional resources to expand development initiatives across the country.
He argued that when businesses and individuals pay their fair share of taxes, the government gains the financial capacity to invest in projects that improve the quality of life for citizens and stimulate economic activity.
Mr. Trawally urged members of the business community to view tax payments not merely as a legal obligation but as a direct contribution to nation-building and economic transformation.
He maintained that the success of Liberia's development agenda depends largely on the willingness of citizens and businesses to support government efforts through responsible financial contributions.
The COLINBO Board Chairman also praised ongoing infrastructure and development projects being implemented under President Boakai’s administration, describing them as evidence of a leadership committed to improving public services and creating opportunities for future generations.
He noted that development is a collective responsibility and called for increased collaboration between government, businesses, and citizens to ensure that Liberia continues on a path of growth and modernization.
“We must all play our part in building Liberia. The more businesses comply with tax requirements, the more resources the government will have to undertake projects that directly improve the lives of the Liberian people,” he said.
Mr. Trawally emphasized that entrepreneurs stand to benefit from a stronger national economy driven by improved infrastructure, expanded energy access, and increased public investment.
He said the private sector should therefore view support for government development initiatives as an investment in the country's future prosperity.
The commissioning of the solar power plant has generated widespread optimism among stakeholders who believe the project could help address longstanding electricity challenges while contributing to Liberia’s broader economic transformation agenda.
For Mr. Trawally, the project serves as a powerful reminder that responsible management of public resources can produce meaningful development outcomes.
As Liberia pursues ambitious goals under the Boakai administration's development agenda, he expressed hope that continued investment in infrastructure, energy, and public services will create lasting benefits for communities across the country.
The business executive concluded by encouraging Liberians to remain supportive of national development efforts and to recognize the important role that tax compliance plays in financing the projects that are helping to shape the country’s future.
“The government is demonstrating that when public funds are used responsibly, real development can happen. We must continue to support these efforts by paying our taxes and contributing to the growth of our nation,” he said.

For the first time in Liberia, President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has commissioned a 20‑megawatt Solar Farm in the Harrisburg Community, Mount Coffee, Montserrado County.

Speaking at the dedication ceremony, the Liberian leader emphasized that reliable electricity extends productive hours, encourages entrepreneurship, and creates employment opportunities.

He noted that the addition of 20 megawatts to the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) power grid is particularly significant for young people:

“Liberia’s future depends on our ability to create opportunities for them to work, innovate, and contribute meaningfully to national development. Expanding access to electricity strengthens our ability to attract investment, support enterprises, and create jobs across multiple sectors.

”President Boakai highlighted that energy also contributes to personal and community security. Well‑lit streets, schools, health facilities, markets, and public spaces foster safer communities. Reliable electricity enhances communication, supports security services, and enables citizens to live with greater confidence. He further stated that the solar farm reflects his commitment to expanding renewable energy while strengthening Liberia’s energy security.

It represents an investment in economic growth, job creation, safer communities, and a more resilient future. The President commended all who contributed to the project — engineers, technicians, contractors, investors, development partners, government institutions, and community members.

He also acknowledged the leadership of the Liberia Electricity Corporation, particularly Managing Director Hon. Mohammed M. Sherif, the Chairman and Members of the Board of Directors, and the Corporation’s management and staff.“While we celebrate this achievement, we recognize that much work remains.

The million-dollar question is, how impactful will the rainy season be on the implementation of President Boakai's flagship "Campaign Promise of "Roads and Roads" in terms of timeline?
Will the government, inspite of the rain, make good on its promise that "Liberians will drive on pave roads from Monrovia to Harper City in Maryland County?
