NaFAA Director General Concludes Official Visit to Morocco, Secures Key Fisheries Cooperation and Investment Commitments

The Director General of the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA), J. Cyrus Saygbe Sr., has concluded a one-week official working visit to the Kingdom of Morocco aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation, attracting investment, and advancing Liberia’s fisheries and aquaculture development agenda.

During the visit, Director General Saygbe participated in the Sea Safety for Fisheries Workshop organized by the Ministerial Conference on Fisheries Cooperation Among African States Bordering the Atlantic Ocean (ATLAFCO) in Tangier, where he delivered opening remarks emphasizing the need for stronger regional coordination and a collective African approach to improving safety at sea for fisherfolks.

Following the workshop, the Director General traveled to Rabat and Casablanca, where he held high-level discussions with Morocco’s Minister of State for Fisheries, Zakia Driouch, and Hassan Sentissi El Idrissi, President of the Association of Moroccan Exporters (ASMEX).

Discussions with the Moroccan government focused on strengthening cooperation in fisheries stock assessment, technical and vocational training for Liberian fisheries and aquaculture professionals, fisheries value addition, and the development of fisheries landing sites in Liberia. Both countries are expected to formalize these commitments through a cooperation agreement scheduled for signing in July 2026.

Meetings with Moroccan private sector representatives explored opportunities to mobilize financing for the construction of Liberia’s first industrial fishing port, the development of an industrial fishing fleet beginning with two shrimp fishing vessels, and investments in aquaculture and inland fisheries development.

The Director General also met with representatives of Green Table, whose Chief Executive Officer expressed interest in serving as a potential off-taker of fisheries products harvested in Liberia, opening new prospects for market access and fisheries exports.

As part of the visit, Director General Saygbe toured Morocco’s National Fishing Vessel Monitoring Center to gain insights into advanced vessel monitoring technologies and fisheries surveillance systems used to combat Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) fishing.

The visit forms part of Liberia’s broader efforts to implement commitments emerging from the Liberia Fisheries and Aquaculture Investment Conference held on March 30–31, 2026, and to strengthen international partnerships that support sustainable fisheries management, food security, job creation, and blue economy development.

Rep. Marvin Cole Calls for CSA Boss Joekai’s Dismissal Over Alleged Code of Conduct Violation

‎By: Gabriel Sagacious Birr

‎B**g County District 3 Representative, J. Marvin Cole, is calling on President Joseph Boakai to immediately dismiss the Director General of the Civil Service Agency (CSA), Dr. Josiah Joekai, for what he described as a violation of Liberia’s civil service code of conduct by attending a political program in party attire.

‎Addressing the media on Tuesday, Representative Cole accused Joekai of “desecrating” the civil service by publicly participating in political activity after previously warning civil servants against such actions.

‎The CSA boss, Dr. Josiah Joekai, was seen on Sunday at the launch of the National Independent Movement for Boakai (NIMBO), a group established to support the re-election bid of President Joseph Nyumah Boakai Sr., wearing political attire, a move Rep. Cole described as hypocritical, given the agency’s past dismissal of public workers over similar allegations of partisanship.

‎The B**g lawmaker said if Joekai cannot resign honorably, President Boakai must act swiftly to uphold the integrity of the civil service, warning that selective enforcement of the rules could set a dangerous precedent for political interference in government institutions.

‎According to Part V, Section 5.1 of Liberia’s National Code of Conduct, presidential appointees must not engage in political activities, use government assets to support partisans or political activities, or serve on the campaign team of political parties while in office.

‎Rep. Cole’s appeal to President Boakai is being viewed as a call to uphold the rule of law among public officials.

PUL Boss Urges Media Shift Toward Energy Reporting

——— as National Development Priority

By Staff Editor

Monrovia – The President of the Press Union of Liberia (PUL), Press Union of Liberia, Julius Kanubah, has challenged journalists across the country to place greater focus on the energy sector, describing it as one of the most critical but underreported drivers of national development.

Speaking on May 21, 2026, at a one-day capacity-building training on “Tracking the Implementation of Liberia’s Electricity Regulatory Framework” held at MUREX Plaza in Sinkor, Monrovia, Kanubah said quality journalism on energy issues is essential for transparency, accountability, and informed public participation.

The training was organized by the Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission, which he praised for strengthening public understanding of electricity governance and regulatory systems in the country.

Energy Coverage Described as Public Interest Journalism

Kanubah stressed that electricity is central to everyday life and national development, noting that poor coverage of the sector limits public awareness of key policy decisions affecting access, affordability, and reliability.

He described energy reporting as a core area of public interest journalism, urging reporters to treat it with the same seriousness as politics and governance.

According to him, the energy sector shapes livelihoods, business productivity, and national growth, making it essential for journalists to consistently inform the public on developments within the industry.

Call for Stronger Investigative Reporting

The PUL President encouraged journalists to go beyond surface reporting and develop stronger investigative skills to scrutinize institutions, policies, and actors within the electricity sector.

He emphasized that effective energy governance depends not only on regulators and policymakers but also on an informed public empowered through accurate and consistent media reporting.

Kanubah noted that technical agencies such as the Liberia Electricity Regulatory Commission cannot effectively communicate all policy decisions directly to citizens without media support.

PUL Reaffirms Role in Media Development
Reaffirming the role of the Press Union of Liberia, Kanubah said the institution remains committed to defending press freedom, advancing professional standards, and improving the welfare and capacity of journalists nationwide.

He described the PUL as a pro-democracy and pro-development body that supports continuous training opportunities for journalists to strengthen their reporting skills.

Energy Sector as National Development Focus
Kanubah emphasized that access to electricity remains one of Liberia’s most pressing development challenges, affecting education, healthcare, business, and household welfare.

He called for sustained media attention to energy issues, arguing that consistent and informed reporting can help drive reforms and improve service delivery.

Outlook

The PUL President expressed optimism that the training would mark a turning point in how journalists cover the energy sector, leading to more analytical, investigative, and policy-driven reporting in Liberia’s media landscape.

“Stay with the Daily Trumpet for accurate, balanced, and credible news from Liberia and across the globe.” 🌍
