PRESS STATEMENT BY SATCON LIBERIA

MAY 22, 2025, Monrovia, Liberia.

The Management of SATCON Liberia wishes to state to the public that it remains open and is providing its services to its subscribers contrary to the misinformation in the media; the Supreme Court of Liberia has never ordered its closure; and that the dispute over content with the DSTV Africa local retailer remains a legal battle over the rights to certain football games which does not affect the overall programming contents as erroneously reported.

As per the records the entrance of SATCON Liberia into the telecommunications space particularly the satellite televisions services was a liberation for thousands of Liberians who were sufferings from the oppressive premiums of the Consolidated Group, the DSTV local retailer which is owned by the politician Simeon Freeman.

SATCON introduced on the Liberian market the lowest rates for the lowest income earners and even the jobless in Liberia because of its belief that the Constitution of Liberia has stated that access to information and entertainment is an inalienable constitutional right of all Liberians. The liberation of Liberians from the oppressive rates of the then sole satellite Television service provider, the DSTV Africa and its distributor Simon Freeman by SATCON is factual as we have rates as low as Six United States Dollars which payment provides a whole month of entertainment, education, cartoons, sports, movies, music etc for all of the family. These low rates for very rich boutique of channels have enable families of low income to provide the same opportunities to their children as the children of higher income families.

SATCON also has invested in telecommunications infrastructures which even the national company is benefiting as well as it has included Liberian television stations on its platforms available to all subscribers unlike the Consolidated Group which is merely a marketing store for DSTV Africa. The following Liberian owned television stations are enjoying free promotion on the Satcon Platform: 1. The Liberia National Television- state owned LBS; 2. TAMMA TV; 3. KMTV; 4. BOSS TV; 5. HOT TV; 6. JUJU Africa TV; and 7. INTEL Sports TV.

The Consolidated Group which has maintained the highest premium for the DSTV Africa services in the whole of Africa in Liberia felt threatened by Satcon agenda for the poor and the broad masses of the Liberian people and to protect its oppressive premiums commenced a totally vexatious lawsuit against Satcon Liberia, NanaSat, etc in 2020 claiming intellectual property rights and copyright over the English Premier League and the Spanish La Liga League. Satcon informed the Commercial Court that these ludicrous claims cannot be supported by evidence because the Premier League and the La Liga League are very strong and established European institutions worth billions of dollars which Consolidated Group lacks the means to purchase and own.

After a lengthy trial, these laughable claims were thrown out by the Commercial Court in a unanimous ruling which firmly stated that there is no evidence neither document produced at trial nor oral testimonies to prove that Simon Freeman through his Consolidated Group owns the English Premier League ant the Spanish La Liga League in Africa and Liberia. In fact during the trial two executives of DSTV Africa from South Africa who were sub-poenaed witnesses stated under oath while on the witness stand that they, DSTV Africa, do not own intellectual property rights and copyrights over the Premier League and the La Liga League but that they like many others telecommunication giant across the world purchased distribution rights from these leagues and have their distributers network to serve the public across Africa. Further the two witnesses asserted that they are in competition with other distribution rights owners across Africa like Satcon mother company.
However, the fact that the Supreme Court has overturned the unanimous judgement of the three judges panel of the specialized Commercial Court which ruled that Simon Freeman does not own the Premier League and the La Liga League and further that he has no intellectual property rights and copyrights over these two leagues; and that the Supreme Court of Liberia has in its ruling stated that Simon Freeman and the Consolidated Group owns Intellectual Property Rights and Copyrights which is actual ownership of the Premier League and the La Liga League, Satcon Liberia is consulting its lawyers on the way forward.
Satcon Liberia is urging all of its subscribers that it will continue to fight for low-income earners and the jobless to continue to enjoy the same satellite television services at the very low, affordable rates thought he court system because though the ruling of the Supreme Court will be obeyed but Satcon strongly states that the Supreme Court of Liberia has never shut its operations down and that the media reports are baseless and represent a calculated strategy to harm its business interests.
Therefore, Satcon Liberia as a law abiding corporate citizen respects the ruling of the Supreme Court which says that Simon Freeman has ownership of the English Premier League and the Spanish La Liga League but will continue through the legal means to inform the Supreme Court that these claims by Freeman are unfounded, misleading and does not exist. And further the DSTV Africa retailer intend to use the court to regain the monopoly which it always use to exploit the Liberian people because Satcon’s supplier has its original rights bought from both leagues.

In conclusion Satcon Liberia remains a legal corporate citizen and continue to provide its wide range of boutique premium satellite television services in Liberia and will continue to promote the growth of Liberian owned telecommunications stations; but want to emphatically say that the Supreme Court has never order the closure of this company.
