Just in : Momentum Builds for Bility's CMC: Opposition Defections Swell Ranks at Home and Abroad

Staff Writer

Monrovia, Liberia – October 24, 2025 - The Citizens Movement for Change (CMC) is demonstrating significant and growing momentum as it positions itself for the 2029 general elections, with a wave of new members joining from rival parties and the Liberian diaspora.

The movement's growth was underscored by two major developments this week: a key high-level appointment and the high-profile defection of a prominent supporter from the former ruling Congress for Democratic Change (CDC).

The CMC's expansion is not limited to Liberia. Party leader Hon. Musa Hassan Bility has been actively engaging with the Liberian diaspora community, a critical constituency, and has just returned to the country from an international outreach tour.

Further solidifying its structure, the CMC today announced the appointment of Madam Wedei Powell as the Vice Chair for Political, Legal, and Government Reform. This strategic move follows her official decision to join the party, bringing her expertise to a central role within the CMC's leadership.

Jerome Gayman, a well-known supporter of CDC in Grand Bassa County, publicly announced his departure from the party on Thursday. In a move that signals shifting political allegiances, Gayman declared his full allegiance to the CMC and its leader, Representative Musa Hassan Biliy. Speaking to reporters, Gayman stated that his decision was driven by what he called a “clear and inspiring vision” demonstrated by Bility. This defection is seen as indicative of a broader trend of disillusionment with established parties and a search for alternatives.

With a support base widening across the country, the CMC is preparing for its inaugural national convention in the coming months. This event will be a crucial step in formally establishing its platform and leadership structure, cementing its status as a formidable new force in Liberian politics.

Just In: Court Orders Arrest of Sky International Insurance Executives for Contempt

By Melvin Jackson

Monrovia, October 23, 2025

The First Judicial Circuit, Criminal Assizes “C” for Montserrado County has issued a Writ of Arrest and a Closure Order against Sky International Insurance Company, citing Criminal Contempt of Court.

The orders, signed by Assigned Circuit Judge His Honour Ousman F. Feika, stem from the company’s alleged failure to produce defendant Francis P.T. Kollie, for whom it had posted a Criminal Appearance Bond. Kollie is currently facing charges of Theft of Property and Misapplication of Entrusted Property in the case brought by the Republic of Liberia, represented by Beatrice K. Rosario.

According to the court’s writ, multiple notices of assignment were issued for hearings, yet Sky International Insurance failed to present the defendant as required. As a result, the court has ordered the arrest of the company’s General Manager, Comptroller, Accountant, and all senior officers. They are to appear before the court and show cause why they should not be held in contempt.

The writ further stipulates that if the company fails to produce the defendant or pay the full bond amount, its executives will be detained at the Monrovia Central Prison until full compliance is met.

In a separate Closure Order, the court instructed Captain Tina G. Noring, Sheriff of Criminal Court “C”, or her deputies, to seal the premises of Sky International Insurance Company. The sheriff is directed to “lock and chain every entrance” and post copies of the order in visible locations, warning the public to cease all dealings with the company and its officers.

The court’s actions are based on its finding that the company’s conduct constitutes a willful obstruction of justice and a blatant disregard for judicial authority.

Both the Writ of Arrest and Closure Order were signed and sealed by Clerk of Court Snowkes W. Shain on October 22, 2025.

President Boakai Reaffirms Liberia’s Commitment to the United Nations at UN@80 Celebration

By: Joeraisee Israel Prince Joe

Margibi County, Liberia – October 24, 2025:
President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. has reaffirmed Liberia’s unwavering commitment to the ideals and mission of the United Nations as the organization marks its 80th anniversary under the global theme, “Better Together: 80 Years and More for Peace, Development and Human Rights.”

Speaking at the national celebration held in Margibi County, President Boakai described the occasion as a moment of pride for Liberia, recalling the nation’s historic role as a founding member of the UN in 1945. He emphasized that Liberia’s decision to sign the UN Charter in San Francisco reflected a deep sense of duty to humanity and global cooperation.

“Liberia has always been committed to the ideals of the United Nations, and we take great pride in our legacy of advancing peace, security, and human rights,” President Boakai stated.

The Liberian leader reaffirmed the country’s support for the UN’s mission, stressing that Liberia remains steadfast in promoting multilateralism and global solidarity. He noted that as Liberia prepares to take up its seat on the United Nations Security Council in 2026, the country will continue to champion collective action on issues such as sustainable development, climate change, and peacebuilding.

President Boakai also highlighted Liberia’s ongoing efforts to achieve the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), pledging continued prioritization of education, healthcare, economic growth, and climate action to build a resilient and self-sustaining nation.

He extended appreciation to the United Nations Resident Coordinator, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and all partners for their contributions to making the celebration a success.

“Together, we will keep working toward a future of prosperity, stability, and sustainable development for everyone,” President Boakai affirmed. “Long live the United Nations, and long live our common pledge to global peace and security.”

Breaking News : Liberia Grants Temporary Humanitarian Entry to Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia Amid U.S. Deportation Dispute

Monrovia, October 24, 2025 — In a move underscoring its humanitarian legacy and diplomatic resolve, the Government of Liberia has agreed to receive Mr. Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia on a strictly temporary and humanitarian basis. The decision follows a formal request from the United States and comes amid ongoing legal and diplomatic wrangling over Mr. Abrego Garcia’s immigration status.

The announcement, made through Liberia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasizes the country’s commitment to international solidarity and human dignity. Authorities confirmed that the arrangement was reached after extensive consultations with both national and international stakeholders, including the U.S. Department of State and United Nations partners.

Mr. Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national, has been at the center of a contentious deportation saga. Previously deported to El Salvador in violation of a 2019 U.S. court order, he was later returned to the United States to face human smuggling charges in Tennessee, to which he pleaded not guilty CBS News +2.

The Liberian government’s statement outlines four key safeguards:

• ✅ Comprehensive security screening before and upon arrival
• ✅ Respect for due process and human rights, including legal protections
• ✅ Non-refoulement assurance, ensuring he won’t be sent to a country where he risks persecution
• ✅ Coordination with international partners to explore durable legal solutions, including resettlement

Liberia’s decision is framed as a voluntary act of goodwill, rooted in its historical role as a refuge for freedom fighters and democracy advocates. Officials reaffirmed that the country remains committed to humanitarian cooperation, legal integrity, and mutual respect among nations.

This development also reflects the enduring ties between Liberia and the United States—two nations bound by shared values of justice and compassion. As the process unfolds, Liberian authorities will work closely with U.S. counterparts to ensure transparency, safety, and adherence to international law.

Gender Ministry, Partners Begin Mid-Term Review of Women Empowerment Project

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, in partnership with the World Bank and other organizations, has begun the Mid-Term Review of the Liberia Women Empowerment Project.

The review runs from October 20 to 30 at the World Bank Office in Monrovia, with field visits planned across project counties.

A joint team from the Ministry, the World Bank, and implementing partners recently visited Frank Town in Careysburg District, Rural Montserrado County, to assess progress and achievements under the project.

Beneficiaries from several village savings and loan associations met with the team to share their experiences. One beneficiary, Mamie Jessie, said the project funding helped her grow her piggery business from two pigs to nine, adding that she is now building a structure to raise goats and chickens.

Project Lead Service Manager Abdulai Sheriff disclosed that the pilot phase is active in 167 communities — 99 in Rural Montserrado and 68 in Gbarpolu County — with over US$300,000 in grants distributed to 191 beneficiaries so far.

He added that the project aims to reach 36,000 grantees by June 2027.

Project Coordinator Blossom Hodges said more than 1,200 people in Montserrado and Gbarpolu have benefited so far. The project targets 498 communities across six counties and hopes to impact over 267,000 people.

The Liberia Women Empowerment Project, valued at US$44.6 million, is funded by the World Bank and implemented by the Gender Ministry in six counties — Montserrado, Bomi, Grand Cape Mount, Gbarpolu, Grand Gedeh, and River Cess.

The initiative aims to empower women and girls through improved access to education, health services, and livelihood opportunities.
