‘Baseless Allegations’

-Foreign Ministry Denies Links to Transnational Drug Trafficking

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has rejected allegations linking the institution and Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti to transnational drug trafficking, describing the claims as false, baseless, and unsupported by evidence.

In a statement, the Ministry denied allegations involving the misuse of diplomatic pouches, stressing that such privileges are governed by international law and are strictly managed. It also emphasized that the Foreign Minister never authorized any diplomatic shipment connected to narcotics trafficking.

The Ministry said it has been working with international partners, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Spain, Morocco, Serbia, the Netherlands, and the European Union, to strengthen Liberia’s fight against transnational drug crimes through intelligence sharing, technical assistance, and specialized training.

Meanwhile, Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah criticized what he described as irresponsible reporting on the allegations, urging media institutions to verify information before publication while reaffirming the government’s commitment to press freedom and ongoing anti-drug investigations.

Over 7,000 Fail UL Entrance Exams

The University of Liberia has announced that 4,262 candidates passed its 2026 entrance and aptitude examinations, while 7,614 failed to meet the admission requirements.

According to the University’s Center for Testing and Evaluation, 11,876 candidates sat the various examinations between May and June. At the undergraduate level, 3,695 candidates passed out of 10,917 examinees, while female candidates outperformed males overall.

The results also showed high failure rates in the Medical School Aptitude Test, where only 40 of 310 candidates passed, while several candidates across the examinations were disqualified for cheating or administrative errors. Successful applicants will now proceed with the University’s admission and enrollment process.

Former Labour Minister Moses Kollie has stirred political debate after claiming that President Joseph Boakai is demonstrating effective leadership while alleging that former President George Weah became politically isolated during his administration.

Speaking on OK FM, Kollie praised Boakai for consulting his officials before making decisions but alleged that influential individuals around Weah prevented experienced government officials from accessing the former President, resulting in poor policy decisions, including salary harmonization.

Gov’t Declares Free Primary Education Nationwide

The Government of Liberia has announced that public education from Kindergarten through Grade 6 will be completely free beginning with the 2026/2027 academic year, eliminating registration fees, tuition, project fees, teacher appreciation fees, and other charges in public primary schools.

Education Minister Jarso Maley Jallah said the policy fulfills a major government commitment to remove financial barriers preventing children from accessing education. She urged parents to report any public school demanding unauthorized fees, noting that the Ministry will establish reporting channels and deploy education interns to monitor compliance nationwide.

The Minister also reminded parents that Liberia’s Education Reform Act makes school attendance compulsory for children of school age and warned that failure to enroll children without a valid reason could result in legal consequences.

The initiative will be financed through the Education Sector Support Project and government school grants.

President Joseph Boakai has directed the University of Liberia’s administration to accelerate the renovation and modernization of its campuses, expressing concern over delays despite the government’s significant financial investment.

During a high-level meeting at the Executive Mansion, the President noted that about US$6.3 million had been allocated for the rehabilitation project, with funding already processed by the Ministry of Finance.

He instructed stakeholders to identify the causes of the slow implementation and expedite the work. University officials presented a phased renovation plan, including the construction of a 25-classroom building at the Fendall Campus as part of efforts to improve infrastructure and facilitate the institution’s reopening.

Over 90 Prosecutors Added to Government Payroll

The Ministry of Justice has announced that more than 90 prosecutors across Liberia will begin receiving government salaries this August, ending years of service without being placed on the government payroll.

Attorney General and Justice Minister Oswald Tweh made the announcement during a quarterly training workshop for county attorneys, prosecution monitors, and other legal officers.

NASSCORP’s Regional Coordinator Reportedly Dismissed For Financial Fraud?

The National Social Security and Welfare Corporation (NASSCORP) has reportedly dismissed its Regional Coordinator for Grand Bassa, Rivercess, and Sinoe Counties, Gbeh Salinto Montgomery, amid an investigation into alleged pension fraud involving workers of Equatorial Palm Oil (EPO).

The allegations center on more than US$50,000 in pension contributions reportedly unaccounted for between 2021 and 2024. Lawmakers and community advocates claim some workers’ pension deductions were never properly credited, while fraudulent receipts were allegedly issued.

Although reports indicate investigations have uncovered irregularities, NASSCORP has not officially confirmed Montgomery’s dismissal. The allegations remain under investigation, and no criminal charges have been announced.

More Indictments Loom In Multi-Million Dollar Drug Investigation

The government says additional indictments are expected as investigations into Liberia’s multimillion-dollar drug trafficking network continue to expand.

Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah announced that George Harris, owner of Private Bar Entertainment Center, has been formally charged with multiple narcotics-related offenses, including drug trafficking, money laundering, criminal conspiracy, and economic sabotage.

Piah said investigators are pursuing a broader network believed to have operated since 2018, emphasizing that the investigation extends beyond recent drug seizures valued at approximately US$19.3 million. Authorities expect more suspects to be charged as evidence emerges, with the government pledging to dismantle the entire trafficking network.
