A walk through pain, memorial and peace | The Duport Road Massacre. 🥺🥺🥺⏳
The Du Port Road massacre occurred during Liberia’s civil war, a period marked by intense ethnic and political conflict. In December 1994, more than forty people: men, women, children, and the elderly were k!lled at a location known as the Cow Field on Du Port Road. The memorial now stands on a mass grave where victims of the massacre, along with hundreds of others, were buried after their bodies were collected from various parts of Monrovia and laid to rest in the Du-Port Road Waterside Community in Paynesville.
Visiting the memorial offers an opportunity to connect with Liberia’s complex history and reflect on the importance of peace, unity, and reconciliation. It also serves as an important educational site, encouraging dialogue and deeper understanding among present and future generations.

The site was later dedicated by former President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf in honor of Liberians who lost their lives from multiple causes during the country’s 14-year civil conflict, which lasted from December 24, 1989, to August 11, 2003.
