Liberia to Launch National Campaign to Promote Justice and Accountability Tomorrow

By Henry B Gboluma Jr

Monrovia, Liberia — The Office for the Establishment of War and Economic Crimes Court for Liberia (OWECC-L) will officially kick off its nationwide outreach campaign tomorrow, Saturday, July 19, 2025.

The launch ceremony will be held in Monrovia at the Old CID Road, North Gibson Street, Mamba Point.

Under the theme “Justice for All,” this historic initiative aims to engage citizens from all fifteen counties as well as the Liberian diaspora in vital discussions about justice, reconciliation, and national healing.

This campaign marks a major milestone in Liberia’s efforts to establish the War and Economic Crimes Court and the National Anti-Corruption Court; two institutions that the people of Liberia have long awaited to address past atrocities and combat impunity, according to the official press release.

The outreach seeks to inform the public about the mandates of these courts, foster inclusive dialogue among survivors, communities, and stakeholders, and encourage active participation in justice reform and civic education.

Key messages such as “Justice is everybody’s business” and “Delayed justice is not denied justice” will be promoted through radio broadcasts, social media campaigns, community theater, and grassroots activities to reach diverse communities across the country.

Executive Director Dr. Jallah A. Barbu emphasized the importance of inclusivity, stating, “Montserrado is not Liberia alone. We will ensure every county is involved in this process to make justice accessible to all.”

President Joseph Nyuma Boakai also reaffirmed his commitment to these reforms, urging all Liberians to support this crucial movement toward a more transparent and just future.

With plans to operationalize these courts by 2027, Liberia is taking decisive steps to end impunity, rebuild public trust, and foster lasting peace and justice for all its citizens.

Payments are key to institutional growth..

July 9, 2025

The Co-Chairperson of the Western Region Journalists Association (WReJA), Henry Gboluma says the success of the construction of the institution's media complex in Tubmanburg depends heavily on both institutional and individual members due payment.

He encouraged members and individual radio stations on the Western Region Morning Drive on Monday to make their payment to meet the September 2025 deadline, adding that plans are underway to hold a groundbreaking and fundraising ceremony at the start of the dry season.

The decision to move forward with the project was reaffirmed during the association's second anniversary and general assembly held recently in Bopolu City, Gbarpolu County.

Gboluma further disclosed that in the coming weeks, WReJA Chairperson Meloshe Roberts will constitute several working committees tasked with overseeing the planning, coordination, and successful launch of the groundbreaking ceremony and associated activities.

The proposed media complex, once completed, is expected to serve as a hub for journalists and media development across Bomi, Gbarpolu and Grand Cape Mount counties, significantly boosting regional journalism and professional collaboration.

The WReJA leadership is appealing to all members to treat this initiative as a shared responsibility and a bold step toward strengthening press freedom and media infrastructure in Western Liberia.

LACC AnnouncesTravel Bans on Gbarpolu Officials Over Suspected Misappropriation of Yellow Machines

By Henry B Gboluma Jr | Voice of Gbarpolu

BOPOLU CITY, Gbarpolu - The Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC) has announced travel restrictions on several individuals connected to Gbarpolu County as part of an ongoing investigation into the procurement and transfer of three Yellow Machines.

The machines, purchased at a cost of $425,000 USD, fully paid by the previous county administration, are now under scrutiny amid allegations of corruption and misappropriation.

Among those affected are the former and current Gbarpolu Superintendents, J. Keyah Saah and Sam K. Zinnah.

Also implicated are former Project Management Committee (PMC) Chairman Robert Benda, former Fiscal Affairs Superintendent Anthony Yorkor, and Omoru Sheriff, CEO of City Lion.

The current Superintendent is under investigation for his role in relocating the machines from Freeport to Bopolu City, where the equipment remains parked under suspicion of lacking proper ownership documentation and functional status.

In a formal letter dated July 1, 2025, addressed to the Commissioner General of the Liberia Immigration Service (LIS), Elijah F. Rufus, the LACC explained that investigations into these individuals are at an advanced stage.

The Commission emphasized its commitment to due process and indicated that indictments are forthcoming.

To prevent suspects from fleeing the country and to safeguard the integrity of the investigation, the LACC requested LIS to flag and bar these individuals from leaving Liberia through all border points, seaports, and airports until further notice.

The directive, signed by LACC Executive Chairperson Cllr. Alexandra Kormah Zoe, was also circulated to the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General’s Office, Liberia National Police, National Security Agency, and the Financial Intelligence Agency.

In addition to the Gbarpolu officials, the restrictions extend to six suspended and former officials of the Liberia Telecommunications Authority, three from NOCAL, and four from the LRRRC.

This action underscores Liberia’s ongoing efforts to combat corruption and uphold transparency in government procurement and asset management.

Meanwhile, further updates on the investigation into the Yellow Machines are expected as LACC continues their probe.

Senegal Hosts Three-Day ECOWAS Youth Conference to Shape Future Policies

By Rachelle Kanneh

ONE UN HOUSE, Monrovia — In Liberia, Senegal is currently hosting a three-day ECOWAS regional youth conference, which is scheduled to conclude on July 3, 2025.

The event, organized in Senegal, is being conducted live online. Thirteen Liberian youths are participating visually from the UN House in Monrovia, alongside participants from other West African countries who are joining virtually.

Additionally, four youth representatives from Liberia are attending in person, accompanied by Hon. J. Bryant McGill, Deputy Minister for Youth Development at the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Liberia.

This conference serves as a crucial platform for shaping the future of youth across West Africa.

Under the theme "Engaging ECOWAS for a New Vision on Youth," the gathering aims to foster collaboration, innovation, and shared solutions to address the challenges faced by young people in the region.

It brings together youth representatives, policymakers, and stakeholders to work collectively toward a brighter future.

The primary goal of the conference is to co-develop the foundational elements of a new ECOWAS Youth Policy. This involves addressing youth-related issues, establishing regional priorities, and considering the socio-political dynamics of West Africa.

The event presents findings from national consultations in Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, and Senegal, while also incorporating contributions from other member states to develop a comprehensive regional understanding of youth challenges.

Key objectives include promoting cross-sectoral dialogue, developing actionable recommendations for the new regional youth strategy, and creating a roadmap for the finalization and adoption of the ECOWAS Youth Policy.

Through this multi-faceted approach, the conference aims to not only identify problems but also generate practical solutions and establish a clear pathway for youth empowerment and development across the ECOWAS region.

Disclosure: The writer of this story is also attending the event remotely from the UN House in Monrovia.
