November 11, 2025:

In a ceremony held in Dagweh Town, China Henan International Cooperation Group (CHICO) and local government officials from Bomi County formalized a ten-year memorandum of understanding (MOU) approving rock quarrying operations in Bona Town, Dewien District.

The agreement establishes an annual financial package and a broad slate of community-benefit initiatives as the project moves forward.

The signing brought together CHICOโ€™s Project Manager Zhang Sen, district representatives, and leaders from affected communities.

Zhang Sen signed on behalf of CHICO, while the Bomi County superintendent, the district commissioner, and heads of affected communities signed on behalf of the county and communities.

The District Representative Sam P. Jallah witnessed the proceedings and read the final agreement aloud prior to signing.

Key financial terms outlined in the MOU include CHICOโ€™s provision of 7,920 USD monthly to the affected towns as compensation and 27,080 USD monthly to the district for development purposes, in addition to a stated annual envelope of 35,000 USD.

In total, the document specifies a robust flow of funds intended to benefit local residents and support district development efforts over the ten-year period.

Among the commitments under the ten-year framework are policies to prioritize local employment with on-the-job training for district residents, and the hiring of Human Resources and Community Liaison Officers from the district.

CHICO also plans to deploy flag bearers at major road junctions along routes used to transport quarry materials.

Social obligations laid out in the agreement include rehabilitating the Sass Town to Bona Road, constructing all-season hand pumps and latrines in affected communities, and installing solar-powered lights at every junction within the operation area.

The MOU also calls for providing rice to support local holidays, with 100 bags annually allocated for two major holidaysโ€”50 bags at Christmas and 50 during Ramadanโ€”designated for persons with disabilities, among others.

On safety and environmental grounds, CHICO pledges to conduct all rock extraction and transportation with full regard for safety, environmental sustainability, and legal compliance, implementing precautionary measures during blasting and coordinating with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and relevant authorities to align with the Environmental Impact and Social Assessment (EISA) requirements.

A monitoring and evaluation space will be established, allowing both CHICO and local authorities to review activities every five years.
The MOU also emphasizes local employment and proximity-based opportunities to ensure benefits reach neighboring residents.

The host district is obligated to provide a conducive environment and protect the investment while ensuring unhindered access to locations of all quarried rocks to enable the company to fulfill its duties.

The district will support grievance-resolution mechanisms and assist in identifying and recruiting local labor and service providers, with active participation in monitoring, evaluation, and periodic review meetings.

As part of broader project ties, CHICO disclosed that it was subcontracted by Bio-Chico to construct a mini-port in Rossville, with rocks quarried from Bona Town to be used in the port construction project.

Attendees publicly commended Representative Jallah for advocating what they described as a fair and beneficial arrangement for the district and county at large.

Zhang Sen underscored CHICOโ€™s commitment to responsible development and community engagement as the project progresses, while officials signaled that oversight mechanisms would ensure transparency and accountability throughout the decade-long period.

The signing marks a significant milestone for CHICOโ€™s mining activities in the region and for the districtโ€™s broader development goals, officials said, noting that the MOUsโ€™ implementation would be closely watched to deliver tangible community benefits while safeguarding safety and the environment.

By the Chairperson of the Western Region Journalists Association ~ Meloshe Roberts

As the Press Union of Liberia marks its 61st Anniversary, the Western Region Journalists Association extends best felicitation and happiest Anniversary to all its Members in the region and elsewhere.

As the Theme: "Commemorating our past and constructing our future", WReJA as the fastest growing Media organization has made significant gains since its establishment through Unity.
As we look back today under our National Theme, the Association in its successes, has been involved in capacity building, advocacy, giving voice to the voiceless, empowerment of Member institutions and individuals, the promotion of peace and development, a champion for Human Rights and a catalyst against illicit drugs and a Campaigner against Gender Based Violence.

Our achievements over the years, couldn't have been possible if we had not recognized the sense of belongingness and a strength through Unity that the Media is an umbrella that everyone needs to gather under for protection. We have come this far through Unity and we are urging all of our members to continue to look back on our legacy and focus on our future.

As we celebrate the legacy of the PUL today through its many contributions to humanity, peace, democracy, development, Human Rights, the rule of law, Social Justice, fight against Corruption and Champion for accountability, these and many more are the collective efforts of individual Journalists and Institutions.

Were Liberia to write a book of her achievements, the PUL will definitely be the AUTHOR of such a Book.

Happy Anniversary to all.

โ€ŽBMMC Reportedly Demolishes Homes in Je-Kandor Town in Grand Cape Mount

By Jenneh Kemokai | Radio Cape Mount
โ€Ž
โ€ŽJe-Kandor Town, September 23, 2025 ~
โ€ŽResidents of Je-Kandor Town in Grand Cape Mount County are facing a housing crisis after Bea Mountain Mining Corporation (BMMC) reportedly demolished 32 out of 40 dwelling units in the town.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽThe demolition, observed on September 22, 2025, has left many families displaced.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽAccording to Assistant Town Chief, Mr Stanley Pabai, the demolition was part of an agreement signed between the citizens and BMMC.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽDue to delays in constructing new homes for the residents and the risks associated with staying in the area, BMMC agreed to provide USD $450 every three months to each family head for renting alternative accommodations.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽThe residents have already received their first payment, and BMMC has made a vehicle available to transport their belongings.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽHowever, not all residents are satisfied with the arrangement. Chairlady Jumah Pabai expressed concerns that the company did not compensate them for their crops.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽShe urged BMMC to allow them to access their farms and accelerate the construction of new homes to provide a safe and proper place for them to stay.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽThis incident highlights the ongoing tensions between BMMC and the communities in Grand Cape Mount County.
โ€Ž
โ€Ž Before this stage, residents had previously raised concerns about pollution, displacement, and the lack of benefits from mining activities.

The Western Region Journalists Association and Liberia Forest Media Watch-LFMW collabo:

By Ernest Kpehe Moibah Jr.

"The journey into the heart of the Gola Forest and National Park, cannot be complete without first passing through the historic town of Jennemana in Grand Cape Mount County.

The terrain is rugged, the path demanding; but our mission remains firm and unshaken.

This expedition is made possible through a joint collaboration between the Liberia Forest Media Watch (LFMW) and the Western Region Journalists Association (WReJA).

For two days, we are engaging in a conservation focused mission across Western Liberia, conducting in-depth media investigations into the state of the Gola National Park.

Our goal is clear: to uncover abuses threatening this vital ecosystem, highlight challenges raised by community members, and map a way forward in partnership with key stakeholders. It is a task worth every effort.

Today marks Day Two of our mission, and we are digging even deeper, separating assumptions from reality, and bringing the facts to light.

The story of this mission will not just be told; it will be told with clarity, precision, and authority, guided by the ABC method: Accuracy, Balance, and Credibility.
