Braking‼️

Former Vice President and Standard Bearer of Unity Party, His Excellency Ambassador Joseph Nyuma Boakai, today met and held talks with Nimba County Senior Senator Prince Y. Johnson at his office in the Rehab Community, Paynesville City, near Monrovia.

The two political leaders, Amb. Boakai and Sen. Johnson, who is also the Founder of the Movement for Democratic Reconstruction (MDR) political party, greeted each other warmly even though they were not on the same side during the 2017 elections.

However, in the spirit of national reconciliation, Amb. Boakai has held meetings with other political leaders and therefore welcomed the visit of the Nimba Senator.

After pleasantries, the two well-known leaders then held critical discussions on matters of national concerns, including the upcoming 2023 Presidential and Legislative Elections.

The two leaders also discussed the current poor state of National Governance by the CDC-led government and the future of Liberia.

They both however agreed that at a later date, they will inform the public of the details to their discussions.

At the close of the meeting and on a warm handshake of brotherhood, both the Former Vice President and Senator Johnson promised they will continue their healthy consultations periodically as political events unfold in the country.

FIFA TO CONTINUE WITH FOOTBALL DEVELOPMENT IN LIBERIA

FIFA has committed to developing football in Liberia in addition to the Forward 3.0 Program.

The commitment was made in Paris, France, where Liberia Football Association (LFA) President Mustapha Raji and general-secretary Kollie A. Dorko (Atty.) are currently attending a FIFA tactical planning workshop to prepare African members for the next cycle of the FIFA Forward 3.0 Program.

According to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, African football is set to embark on a new era with greater investment in football development and Liberia being one of the beneficiaries.

A team of FIFA experts will arrive in Liberia on 15 February to support the training of women's football clubs in the area of club licensing.

Other opportunities were gained during the workshop through networking with member associations and some club officials would benefit from external training opportunities.

The LFA launched a talent development scheme in December 2022 with an additional support of US$50,000 from FIFA.

Through its Forward 3.0 Program, FIFA plans to give football development initiatives around the world more funding and support than ever before.

The goal of the football development program is to provide each member association and the six confederations with comprehensive, individually-tailored support for the development of football.

Additionally, it seeks to advance Infantino's vision for truly globalizing football and raising the level of competition in the sport on a global scale.

Man bursts eyes of his cheating wife boyfriend

Reports say a man has destroyed the eyes of a census worker for allegedly having an affair with his wife.

The incident is said to have occurred in CJ Town, Compound # 2, Grand Bassa County during last year's Christmas week.

The man reportedly hid himself in his bedroom after he got hint that his wife was cheating on him. According to the man, he purposed in mind to wound the man that he would never forgot, while serving as deterrence for other men.
"So, I hid myself in the room because I was told that the man was always sleeping in my room".

He continued: " and he undressed himself and sleeping on my bed side my wife. I had no choice but to burst his two eyes to serve as warning to other men in the habit of loving to other people's women ".

When asked why he didn't punish his wife as well, the young man had this to say: " I want that woman to take care of her boyfriend. He needs someone to care for him".

When hit by the news of the unfortunate situation involving her husband, the wife retorted: "Everything on my husband was correct before he left from here, so, if his body parts are not correct, he shouldn't come back here".

IPNEWS understands that the consignment was designated for a client (name withheld) on Old Road, a suburb of Monrovia.

Additional security sources informed IPNEWS late Wednesday, that a Customs Officer (Name withheld) was earlier arrested and is now reportedly at large.

The report on the seizure of this heavy consignment of arms and amination has placed security on high alert.

In the capital city Monrovia, there were a heavy security presence at major intersections and a rigorous search of vehicles overnight.

When contacted Liberian Security authorities remained tight-lipped, apparently due to the nature of the seizure and fear to plunge the country into pandemonium.

Recently 100 million co***ne shipments were seized at the very Freeport of Monrovia, following a tipoff by U.S. Security Apparatus to its Liberian counterparts.

The seizure of the co***ne sparked mixed reactions in both Liberia and the world on the security at the Freeport of Monrovia.

Prior to the repeated and unprecedented discoveries, Liberia’s Freeport of Monrovia was one of the safest ports within the West African region when it was managed by both Liberian authorities and the pre-shipment giant BIVAC.

It may be recalled, in 2021, the government of Liberia abruptly canceled the contract of the International Company Bureau Veritas, (BIVAC), longtime operator in Liberia for pre-shipment inspection and Destination inspection.

NaFAA, EJF Climax Fisheries Co-management Policy Validation Workshop

A two-day workshop meant to validate a draft policy for what is known as Collaborative Management Association (CMA), has ended at the Mesurado Pier on the Bushrod Island.

Collaborative management or co-management, is a partnership arrangement in which the community of local resource users (fishers), government, other stakeholders (boat owners, fish traders, boat builders, business people, etc.) and external agents (non-governmental organizations, academic and research institutions) share the responsibility and authority for the management of fisheries.

The Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF), working with the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA) hired an individual consultant through a European Union funding to assist with the drafting of the policy to guide the operations of the CMA for a more effective management of fisheries in Liberia.

The CMA policy seeks to build resilience against food crisis and, among other things, provides an avenue for sustainable fisheries management, ensure transparency and good governance responsible for reducing illegal fishing and provide opportunity to include coastal fishers, women fish processors and other stakeholders into the mainstream of decision-making of fisheries resource management.

Speaking at the start of the validation workshop Tuesday November 22, 2022, NaFAA Deputy Director General for Technical Services, William Y. Boeh, extolled the European Union for the funding to have the CMA structured. Mr. Boeh, however, expressed optimism that the CMA will be established across the nine coastal counties of Liberia.

Providing overview of the validation, the chief representative of EJF, Cephas Asare said the validation gives stakeholders the unique opportunity to evaluate the drafted document compiled by the consultant.

Stakeholders from different line ministries and agencies of government including Liberia Maritime Authority, Environmental Protection Agency, Forestry Development Authority, and the Cooperative Development Agency are in attendance.

Liberian Government Optimistic of EU Lifting Fisheries Yellow Card
-As EU-Liberia Dialogue Begins

The government of Liberia through the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority in collaboration with the Liberia Maritime Authority has expressed optimism that the yellow card issued by the European Union will soon be lifted.

In 2016 Liberia was issued the yellow card as a result of a fishing vessel that was placed on blacklist but was at the same time fishing in Liberian waters thus showing its lack of effective regulatory and monitoring control of distanced water fishing flagged vessels.

As a result, a European Union delegation is in Liberia as guest of the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority and Liberia Maritime Authority to hold discussions on the possibility of lifting the Yellow Card.

Welcoming the EU delegation to Liberia Monday November 16, 2022, at the start of the three- day technical fisheries meeting at NaFAA’s Corporate Headquarters, Director General Emma Metieh Glassco expressed optimism of Liberia receiving a green card from EU at the end of the dialogue.

Madam Glassco assured that Liberia has met all of the technical requirements set by the European Union on illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing activities.

Speaking also during the opening session of the dialogue the Commissioner of the Liberia Maritime Authority Len Eugene Nagbe confirmed that they have over the years worked collaboratively with the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority in the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing activities.

For his part, the head of the European Commission Unit for Illegal, Unreported and unregulated (IUU) fisheries policy Mr. Roberto Cesari acknowledged that Liberia has made progress in its legal framework and monitoring mechanism, and the team was in the country to further assess the progress made.

For Immediate Release

Accra, Nov. 8, 2022: The Government of Liberia, through the National Fisheries & Aquaculture Authority in collaboration with the Liberia Maritime Authority, and the Government of Ghana, through its Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, on November 7, 2022, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for cooperation in combating illegal fishing activities.

The purpose of the MoU is to promote and facilitate cooperation in fisheries inspection and related activities. The MOU also seeks ensure effective administration and control over flagged-fishing and fishing related ships of the Parties with respect to their national laws and regulations and international conventions to prevent, deter and eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Through the framework of the MOU, the two countries will cooperate in the areas of:

a. Harmonized inspectorate regime;
b. Joint inspection exercises of fishing and fishing related vessels; and
c. Exchange of information on monitoring, control and surveillance.
A NaFAA press release says the MOU is in accordance with Article 6 of the Port State Measures Agreement (PSMA) of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), which provides that the Parties shall cooperate within the bounds of their respective national laws and regulations as well as relevant international conventions to which they are parties. It follows similar MOU signed on November 2, 2022 between the Republic of Liberia and the Republic of Cote D’Ivoire.

The Director General of the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority of Liberia, Honorable Emma Metieh Glassco, signed on behalf of the Government of Liberia and the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development and Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East Constituencyof Ghana Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson signed on behalf of her government.

Making remarks at the signing ceremonies, Honorable Emma Metieh Glassco recalled the longstanding cordial relations between Ghana and Liberia and that the MOU further strengthens that already mutually beneficial relations. She emphasized that IUU fishing is one of the most severe problems affecting world fisheries and the main obstacle in achieving sustainable fisheries globally. The NaFAA DG also provided that the MOU will promote and facilitate cooperation in fisheries inspection and related activities to ensure effective administration and control over flagged fishing and fishing related vessels of our respective countries as stated in the purpose of this MOU. Concluding her remarks, she suggested the need to use the MOU as the first step to strengthening collaboration as member states of ECOWAS and develop program for joint actions in the fight against IUU.

For her part, the Minister of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development of Ghana, Hon. Mavis Hawa Koomson recalled the longstanding good relations between Ghana and Liberia and reminded everyone that fishing contributes significantly to the GDPs of Ghana and Liberia. Speaking about illegal fishing, she spoke about the billions of dollars that are lost through IUU fishing annually and the social and environmental impacts it has a countries and fishing communities. Hon. Koomson stressed the need for Liberia and Ghana to cooperate in the areas of closed fishing and fishery research for better fishery replenishment and fishing outcome.

In addition to improving fisheries governance between the two countries, the MOU is also a milestone in the efforts by the Liberia Maritime Authority and its agent to ensure that Liberia’s distant waters ship fleet is effectively monitored to deter and prevent illegal activities. In the context of the MOU, this is particularly true for the monitoring, controlling and surveillance activities of reefers, fishing vessels and fishing related vessels in the Liberia Shipping Registry.

The Senior Deputy Commissioner for Maritime Affairs of the Liberia Maritime Authority, Cllr. Margaret Ansumana and the Deputy Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development and MP for Trobu Constituency, Greater Accra Region of Ghana Hon. Moses Anim, witnessed the program.

In the coming months, the Liberia Maritime Authority and the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority will commence the practicalities of fully implementing the MOU for the benefits of both countries.
