Monrovia, Liberia - A major land dispute has exploded in Grand Gedeh County, pitting citizens against their local administration following an alleged illegal leasing agreement. The crisis escalated yesterday when a delegation from the B’hai Administrative District delivered a scathing six-count petition to the Grand Gedeh Legislative Caucus in Monrovia.
The petition demands the immediate revocation of a 30-year cocoa cultivation deal involving 500 acres of community land, allegedly signed between local authorities and a Burkinabe national identified as Mr. Boubou Sebu.
CITIZENS LAY OUT DAMNING CHARGES AGAINST SUPERINTENDENT
The citizens' accusations, read by Mr. Alex Beh, are leveled directly at Superintendent Alex Grant. They allege a pattern of gross misconduct and abuse of power:
Illegal Survey and Seizure: Grant is accused of conducting an illegal survey of 500 acres and seizing community land without citizen consent.
Intimidation and Harassment:
The petition claims constant harassment has blocked residents from accessing their forest and livelihood activities. Further, it alleges Grant is currently building a private residence near the Liberian–Ivorian border.
Protecting Foreign Nationals:
Superintendent Grant is charged with protecting illegal Burkinabe nationals over Liberian citizens.
Land Conflict: He is blamed for allowing massive forest cultivation that has triggered multiple land conflicts.
Secret 30-Year Deal:
The most serious allegation is entering into a 30-year concession agreement with Mr. Sebu without the knowledge or participation of the affected communities.
CAUCUS CHAIRMAN VOWS IMMEDIATE ACTION
In response to the volatile allegations, Senator Thomas Yaya Nimely, Chairman of the Grand Gedeh County Legislative Caucus, promised a swift and comprehensive investigation.
Nimely confirmed the Caucus will officially write to the Minister of Internal Affairs and summon Superintendent Grant to explain the legality of the Burkinabe national’s presence and the ownership of the disputed land.
The Senator did not mince words regarding the severity of the allegations: "We will look at the level of disrespect. The level of non-cooperation between the superintendent and the citizens, which signals his disparity in his mandate."
The political crisis is now shifting to the Ministry of Internal Affairs as the Caucus prepares to confront the accused Superintendent.
