EU Slaps €200 Million ($232 Million) Fine on Temu for Selling Illegal Products

European Union regulators have fined Chinese e-commerce giant Temu €200 million ($232 million) after finding that the platform failed to protect consumers from illegal and dangerous products sold on its site.

The penalty, announced Thursday by the European Commission, marks the first major enforcement action against Temu under the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA) and signals Brussels’ determination to hold online marketplaces accountable for harmful goods reaching European consumers.

WHY TEMU WAS FINED
The European Commission concluded that Temu did not adequately identify, evaluate, or manage systemic risks associated with illegal products on its platform. Specifically, regulators found that the company failed to:

- Diligently identify and assess risks from illegal goods and the harm they could cause to EU consumers.
- Evaluate how its recommendation systems and influencer product promotion strategies could amplify risks related to illegal product sales.
- Address platform design features that might exacerbate the spread of illegal products.

The investigation uncovered serious safety violations, including hazardous baby toys and faulty chargers that didn’t comply with EU consumer safety rules.

DANGEROUS PRODUCTS FOUND
During a “mystery shopping exercise,” EU regulators discovered numerous non-compliant products on Temu’s platform. Investigators identified baby toys containing chemicals exceeding legal limits, some with detachable parts posing choking risks or suffocation hazards...

National Shutdown planned in South Africa on 30 June 2026

South Africa is facing a planned national shutdown on 30 June 2026, driven by a coalition of anti‑migrant and other aligned groups, centred on demands for the removal of “illegal foreign nationals” from the country and stricter immigration controls. The shutdown is framed by organisers as a mass act of protest and economic blockade, with calls for workers, businesses and communities to stay away from economic activity on that day, especially in major urban centres and along key transport corridors.

The primary driver of the 30 June shutdown is the March and March movement, an anti‑undocumented‑migration group that has gained prominence through a series of large community marches in cities such as Durban, Rustenburg and Cape Town. March and March describes its campaign as focused on “national security” rather than xenophobia, arguing that undocumented foreigners depress wages, fuel crime and strain public services, and that the government has failed to act decisively to regularise or remove them. The movement’s leadership, including figures such as Jacinta Ngobese‑Zuma, has publicly stated that the 30 June date is a non‑negotiable deadline for undocumented migrants to leave the country, characterising the shutdown as a lawful exercise of civic protest.

March and March is not acting alone. It is aligned with other groups that have gained traction over several years of anti‑migrant mobilisation, including Operation Dudula, which built its national profile through doorstep “inspections” and calls to report undocumented foreigners. Political parties such as ActionSA, the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and the MK Party have also endorsed tougher immigration controls and have lent rhetorical support to the broader anti‑undocumented‑migration agenda, even if they have not formally declared participation in the shutdown itself.

The 30 June shutdown has also been amplified by the All Truck Drivers Forum and Allied South Africa (ATDF‑ASA), a recently formed trucking‑industry body that has separately announced its own nationwide shutdown on the same day...

Protests in Nigeria amid xenophobia tensions linked to South Africa

The alleged xenophobic attacks in South Africa have triggered angry protests in Nigeria, where youths have been targeting stores and offices linked to South African businesses in retaliation. Reports say the backlash has included shutdowns, looting, and vandalism aimed at companies such as MTN and Shoprite, underscoring how quickly anti-immigrant violence in one country can spill across borders.

Nigeria has repeatedly warned its citizens in South Africa as violence and anti-foreigner sentiment flare up again, with officials saying protests in several South African cities have turned violent and foreign-owned businesses are being threatened. The warning reflects deep public anger in Nigeria, where many people view attacks on Nigerians in South Africa as part of a longer pattern of xenophobic abuse.

That anger has found expression in the streets. Young protesters, including student groups, have taken action against South African companies operating in Nigeria, saying they are responding to the suffering of Nigerians in South Africa.

BA UTSWA ALLES 🤦‍♂️ (see previous videos & pics)

Bloemfontein was rocked today by a planned shutdown that quickly escalated beyond protest action, with reports of looting targeting foreign-owned shops in township areas and a growing number of arrests by police. The unrest, which authorities linked to public violence and criminal opportunism, has once again exposed how service-delivery anger in Mangaung can spill into attacks on businesses and residents.

The shutdown was originally framed as protest action, but it soon spread across Mangaung, disrupting daily life and drawing a heavy police response. In the Batho area, a liquor store was looted as officers moved in to arrest suspects, while police said additional cases are on-going as more shop owners opened complaints. Reports also indicate that the unrest was not confined to a single neighbourhood, raising concern that the situation could spread further if order is not restored quickly.

A central feature of the violence has been the looting of foreign-owned businesses, a pattern seen in previous Mangaung shutdowns as well. Police and media reports have described several shops being attacked, with some owners injured and property stolen during the chaos. The targeting of these shops has revived fears among migrant traders and other small business owners who often bear the brunt of township unrest.

Police say arrests are already under way and that more are likely as investigations continue.

The shutdown reflects deeper frustrations in Mangaung over service delivery, housing and economic hardship, but the shift from protest to looting has changed the public focus from grievances to criminality. Unless organisers can separate protest from opportunistic violence, the shutdown risks undermining its own message and deepening mistrust in the township.
