Have you ever wondered about the inspirations behind our game ? Well here they are.
Book Smugglers has many elements of a tabletop RPG: you make your own choices, where success is not always guaranteed. You also have to manage your inventory, health, reputation and food, not to mention the game has elements of a visual novel as well. You can call it a simulation game, a point and click game, maybe even an RPG. But the most improtant part of this game: its relation to history.
You see, book smugglers themselves aren't our creation: they actually existed in the 19th century Lithuania, when it was controlled by the Russian Empire. The Latin print was completely banned and book smugglers (or knygnešiai, which is how they were called) risked their lives to distribute books in Latin print around the country. This is an important part of Lithuanian history, as it talks about our fight to protect our language, culture, and freedom. Unfortunatley, the struggle didn't end and didn't start with the Russian empire. It doesn't even end with Lithuania. Many cultures around the world have struggled or still struggle with keeping their identity and language alive while being oppressed by a bigger, more powerful country. That's why we believe that our story deserves to be told. We think the games we mention have a great way of telling stories: have we succeeded in doing the same?
