*** The Princess Who Chose Prayer: Lithuania's Forgotten Patroness ***
Every October 18th, the Orthodox Church commemorates Saint Charitina, Princess of Lithuania—a royal figure who lived two centuries before Lithuania's Catholic baptism. Born into 13th-century pagan nobility, she fled "oppressive paganism" to become an abbess in Orthodox Novgorod.
What makes her story remarkable? Despite her royal birth and position as abbess, she's depicted in Orthodox iconography "as a maiden in one garment without a mantle"—stripped of all symbols of power and status. Her sanctity was defined by humility, purity, and simplicity.
Today, as Lithuania rediscovers its complex spiritual heritage, Charitina represents a forgotten layer of national identity: the Eastern Christian roots that predate the country's official Catholicism by centuries.
A story of choice, exile, and the enduring power of simplicity.
