Our first Pop Up Film Residency in Rome hosted by the team of Kino Produzioni !🇮🇹

In June, Palestinian filmmaker Laila Abbas (Laila Abbas ) joined the Pop Up Film Residency to develop her project AMERICA IS BEHIND THE DOOR, a darkly comic story about citizenship, belonging and moral complicity against the backdrop of the war on Gaza.

Throughout the residency, Laila worked closely with mentors Lara Costa Calzado, Isabella Weber and Giovanni Pompili, taking the time and space to question, reshape and deepen her film.

Three weeks in Rome, dedicated to writing, exchanging and pushing a story further. Step inside Laila’s summer in Italy and see where the residency took her.

Three weeks, three mentors, three fresh perspectives on one story.

This June, Belgian filmmaker Koen Mortier (Koenmortier )brought Flakka / Spice to Paris for a Pop Up Film Residency shaped around dialogue and exchange. The project follows Louis, a young man experiencing a cannabis-related psychotic episode, and his parents’ desperate attempts to find him the help he needs.

Each week opened a new chapter in the writing process, with Koen working one-on-one with a different script consultant: Matthieu Taponier, Philippe Barrière and Nadja Dumouchel. Three distinct encounters, offering new ways to question, challenge and deepen the screenplay.

After winning the Pop Up Film Residency Award at When East Meets West this January, Brazilian filmmaker Nina Kopko (nina, ) spent June in Bratislava, where she developed her debut feature - THE LAST DOG ON EARTH.

Set in a near future where dogs have vanished after a devastating pandemic, the film follows Luana, a rideshare driver whose final shift takes an unexpected turn when a passenger entrusts her with what may be the last dog on Earth.

During her residency, Nina discussed the project with acclaimed Hungarian filmmaker Ildikó Enyedi (Ildiko Enyedi ) in Budapest, then returned to Bratislava to write in the quiet of its libraries. Between research at the city’s animal shelter, she found inspiration wandering through galleries, cinemas, and the city’s everyday life.

This June, the 6th edition of the Pop Up Film Residency Eurimages welcomed Lithuanian/French filmmaker Alanté Kavaïté (Alante Kavaite ) to Tórshavn, Faroe Islands, where she developed BEAVER SONG, her fourth feature film. Blending live action and animation, the project follows a young girl driven by overwhelming desires in a world slowly falling apart, a sensory journey through childhood, instinct, and transformation.

Hosted by producer Jón Hammer (Outlier Projects ) with Danish writer T**e Westmark Steensen (T**e Westmark Steensen ) as script mentor, the three week residency offered a unique space for reflection, collaboration, and creative exploration, where the changing lights and colors of the Faroe Islands became part of Alante’s creative journey.

From the Philippines to Denmark, this spring brought a new chapter for writer and director Sam Manacsa (Sam ).

As part of the Pop Up Film Residency in Copenhagen, supported by the Film Academy of the Philippines (Film Academy of the Philippines ) and the Quezon City Screen Commission (Quezon City Screen Commission (Screen QC) ), Sam spent three weeks advancing her feature project THE VOID IS IDLE HOURS. Hosted by producer Katja Adomeit (Katja Adomeit ) and guided by writer and director Daniel Borgman ( ), the residency offered dedicated time for writing, reflection, and creative exchange.

This spring, Filipino production designer Eero Francisco (Eero Francisco ) spent three weeks in Bucharest as part of the Pop Up Film Residency, supported by the Film Academy of the Philippines (Film Academy of the Philippines ) and the Quezon City Screen Commission (Quezon City Screen Commission (Screen QC) ). Hosted by producer Ada Solomon (Ada Solomon ) and mentored by production designer Mălina Ionescu (Malina Ionescu ), Eero developed production designs for his upcoming projects.

Looking for expert guidance and international connections to take it to the next level?

This fall, Slovak Pop Up again offers you a unique chance to consult your project in person with a renowned international script consultant in Bratislava. From September 16 to September 18, selected Slovak projects will receive dedicated feedback and development support from an international mentor, alongside the opportunity to connect with international residents of the Pop Up Film Residency: Slovenian writer and director August Braatz and Ethiopian producer Nahusenay Dereje.

Whether you’re developing fiction, documentary, or animation, short or a feature, and whether it’s your first film or your fifth, this program is for you.

This year, we’re especially looking to support comedies.

Join projects like The Nightsiren (Svetlonoc) by Tereza Nvotová, The Chambermaid (Slúžka) by Mariana Čengel Solčanská, Flood (Potopa) by Martin Gonda, Cowgirl by Michal Blaško or Birdhill(Vtáčnik) by Eva Križková, which all began their journey with Slovak Pop Up as well!
