More than 150 kilometres in length, the Transfagarasan Highway is Romania’s most spectacular and best known road, and, thanks to an appearance on BBC Top Gear, now one of the country’s most popular tourist attractions.

Fully open only from June to October, the road’s highest point is at 2042 metres: the tunnel which links the northern and southern sides at Lake Balea (Balea Lac).

However, if you're looking for a little more asphalt and engine-powered excitement, perhaps you should check out the Transalpina Highway, which owns the notorious (unofficial) title of Romania's most dangerous road!

Ah, fall. A chill in the air, brilliantly-coloured leaves, an abundance of apples and pumpkins. A season that has inspired painters, poets and legions of self-proclaimed ‘basic bitches’. Poland has no shortage of such female autumn enthusiasts, who have recently coined a term for themselves: jesieniary, from the Polish word for autumn, jesień.

Of course, lads can like fall too, and the male equivalent of jesieniara is jesieniarz. The attributes of jesieniary and jesieniarze are similar to what folks enjoy elsewhere in the West: pumpkin spice lattes, chunky sweaters, curling up under a blanket while appropriately autumnal jazz plays in the background.

But fall in Poland comes with some more unusual activities, which were part of celebrating the season long before the jesieniary trend was making the rounds on social media.

Here, autumn can hardly be considered complete without hunting for forest mushrooms, cooking plum preserves and connecting with Slavic forefathers by visiting the dead on All Saints’ Day and All Souls Day.

As would be expected from a country that borrows the lyrics for its national anthem from a poem entitled The Toast, winemaking and viticulture hold a special place in the hearts and minds of most Slovenes.

So it should come as no surprise that tons of wine-related events take place throughout the year, ranging from professional international competitions to local affairs in smaller villages where all manner of bacchanalian revelry is guaranteed to transpire.

Andorra is a place of epic beauty and impressive high-mountain landscape. The country has a few fantastic natural parks with well-preserved flora and fauna, some of which are even included in the Unesco world heritage locations.

Those parks are wild enough, but also don’t lack the set of facilities every visitor needs – some good places to eat, some children playgrounds and organized activities, some convenient means of transportation to and from the place.

Dubrovnik is without a doubt a city of culture, but with the sparkling blue Adriatic here we’re sure you’re going to want to have a dip. Here’s where.

In the city itself, the town beach is Banje, just outside the Ploče gate of the city walls. The expanse of white pebbles has a super view of the Old Town and is suitable for children and non-swimmers.

Here, the Banje Beach Club is a classy venue for cocktails and after beach shenanigans, and there’s a restaurant upstairs offering tempting Mediterranean specialities.

Or you could creep through the “Buža” hole in the southern city walls and take a dive off the rocks there – the crystalline water is truly tempting.

Have you ever been somewhere that offered it?

From National Geographic:

Are you tempted by pretty much everything in a pizzeria? Then the new wave of pizza omakase tasting menus could be for you.
