🇦🇿 | Disbarment of a lawyer for statements made to the press regarding the ill-treatment of his client by prison staff: violation of Articles 10 and 8, non-examination of the complaint under Article 18 (joint partly dissenting opinion of Judges Ktistakis and Pavli).

🇺🇦 | Appellate court reduced tenfold the compensation awarded to a prisoner for a letter unlawfully opened by the prison administration & ordered him to pay the court fees incurred by the prison administration on appeal, despite the applicant being a life-sentenced prisoner without income: violation of Article 6 § 1.

🇮🇹 | Continued detention of a prisoner with a disability, requiring constant assistance and a programme of rehabilitation and physiotherapy: violation of Article 3.

📢 We are launching today in Brussels the European Prisoners' Rights Days with UCLouvain Saint-Louis Bruxelles, ULB - Université libre de Bruxelles and AVOCATS.BE, focusing on strengthening the intervention of lawyers in prisons.

⚖️ Today’s discussions address the strengthening of the position of lawyers in prisons. Lawyers play a crucial role not only in protecting prisoners’ rights but also in safeguarding the rule of law, particularly amid political instrumentalisation of security and prison issues.

🤝 The event brings together former prisoners, practicing lawyers, representatives of lawyers’ organisations, NGOs, and EU experts to discuss the current state of play and explore ways to reinforce prisoners’ procedural rights, including access to legal aid.
