The concept of the limited slip differential was developed to overcome the limitations of the open differential, which transfers torque equally to both drive wheels—resulting in loss of traction when one wheel slips.

The first notable L*D application appeared in the early 1930s, developed by Ferdinand Porsche for Auto Union Grand Prix cars. This design allowed for improved traction during high-speed cornering by limiting the speed difference between drive wheels.

In the 1950s, ZF Friedrichshafen refined the concept and introduced clutch-type L*Ds into production vehicles, notably in the Mercedes-Benz 300SL. These systems used friction discs and preload springs to mechanically bias torque toward the wheel with more grip.

Over the decades, various L*D types emerged, including cone-type, helical gear (Torsen), and viscous coupling differentials. Modern systems also incorporate electronic control to manage torque distribution dynamically, often referred to as eL*Ds.

Today, L*Ds remain a critical component in performance and off-road vehicles, balancing the need for traction, stability, and drivability.
