🚢✨ RENOVATIONS - RENOVATIOUNEN:
A Ship, A Story, A Europe Without Borders
When the Ministry of Economics launched a call for proposals to document the renovation of the Princesse Marie Astrid — the ship where the Schengen Agreement was signed on 14 June 1985 — we decided to go a step further.
Our pitch was not to simply film the technical restoration, but to also tell the broader story of the Schengen Agreements themselves: a European milestone that has been under pressure for years, whether during the pandemic, the refugee crisis, or political debates about open borders.
Over the last four years, we followed the ship’s journey from its purchase and dismantling to its rebirth as the Princesse Marie Astrid Europa, and combined these images with the voices of politicians past and present. Together, they reflect on the benefits of Schengen, the crises it has faced, and what is needed to keep it alive for the future. The restored ship became the perfect symbol for this wider reflection.
Our documentary RENOVATIOUNEN intertwines history, present challenges, and the symbolic rebirth of a vessel that once hosted a defining European moment.
We are proud of this project, grateful for the trust placed in us, and happy to finally share it with you.
