Leather Handle Sewing 🧵

I work with a high volume of handle production, so maintaining both speed and consistent quality is essential. 🧵
To streamline the process and reduce the risk of errors, I use a dedicated template that allows me to position the leather precisely every time. 📏
This approach helps ensure uniformity across all pieces, improves efficiency, and minimizes the need for rework. ⚙️

✅ The thread should match the needle size
Although the leather is quite thick and typically calls for size 40 thread and a size 22 or 23 needle, I use a smaller thread and needle so the stitching looks cleaner and more refined.

🔥Crazy Horse leather is a type of full-grain leather with a vintage, rugged look.
It changes color when bent and gets a beautiful patina over time.

✅ When sewing curves like this, I guide the leather with one hand.
I increase speed on straight lines and slow down on turns, carefully rotating the leather.

🕕For stitching 2 mm leather, I use a special leather needle number 22/140🪡, size 20 synthetic thread🧵, and a triple-feed sewing machine Rubina RB-0617D.

Why it works:
✅ Precision: Acts as a rigid guide for a perfectly straight edge.
✅ Speed: No more marking or pinning - just tape and fold.
✅ Safety: No needle holes or permanent ink stains on your fabric.

Chalk is messy, and pens don't show up on dark colors.
✅ My go-to trick for heavy fabrics is masking tape! It stays put, marks the line perfectly, and keeps the fabric from sliding. It’s easy to remove and leaves no trace.

🪡 How to Prevent Skipped Stitches in Heavy Materials ?

❗️Needle size No. 22/140 (LR, DPx17), when sewing webbing together with leather of a total thickness of about 7 mm using thread No. 20, may not provide stable loop formation.

⬇️As a result, the hook does not catch the thread, leading to skipped stitches. This occurs because the needle size does not match the thickness of the material and the thread being used.

✅ To resolve the issue, it is recommended to use a larger needle size (No. 23/160 or No. 24/180), which will ensure more stable loop formation and high stitch quality.

✅Leather and Belt Slider Sewing

I mark points with tape, secure leather with double-sided tape and clips, then sew.
After sewing, I trim and seal threads. Leather & belt 7 mm, thread 20, needle DPx17.

✅To make sure the leather is attached evenly to the belt strap on both sides, I use paper tape to mark the attachment points first.
✅To secure the leather to the belt strap, I use double-sided tape. After positioning the leather on the belt strap, I additionally secure it with paper clips. The paper clips leave no marks on the leather.
✅After sewing the leather, I take off the construction tape, cut off the threads, and sear them with a lighter.

The thickness of the leather and belt strap is 7 mm. I use size 20 thread and a size 23 (160) DPx17 (LR) leather needle.

✅ To keep the seam even when turning:

- keep the needle in the down position at all times
- slightly lift the presser foot
- gently rotate the leather
- lower the presser foot and make 1–2 stitches
- lift the presser foot again and repeat the turn

Step by step, this creates a smooth, neat curve without shifting.

✅ Optimal stitch length:
• 3.5 to 4.25 mm

✅ For this thickness - 2,5 mm leather , I use:
• size 20 thread
• a size 22 leather needle
• a triple feed machine — this ensures even material feeding

✅For thick leather or double-layered projects, my go-to setup is a Schmetz 160 LR needle (DPx17 system) and Amanda Mars No. 20 polyester thread.

The LR (Leather Reverse) point is the secret here - it cuts the leather at a 45-degree angle.

Making a leather shoulder pad for a bag.
✅To fix the two pieces of leather together, I use double-sided tape and leather glue.
✅ I don’t mark the leather before stitching.
Instead, I guide the leather by keeping it aligned with one side of the presser foot while sewing.

🪡For sewing 6 mm thick leather, I use a size 23/160 leather needle, size 20 synthetic thread, and a stitch length of 4.25 mm.

✅To make sure the leather piece is attached evenly on both sides, I use construction tape on the belt strap to mark where the leather piece should be attached.
I attach the leather using double-sided tape.

✅I use size 20 synthetic thread and a special leather needle, size 160/23.

The leather and belt strap are 7 mm thick.
