The animated film studio Studija Kokles* was established in 2019 with the aim of creating films that inspire their creators and viewers to rise above the everyday and discover the world’s diversity and cultural-historical heritage.

📍Aiz kadra: atkārtojums kā superjauda

Animatore Darja un viņas papagailiene Misato ikdienā izmanto atsauces. Darja filmē kustību video, ko vēlāk izmanto animācijas epizodēs, pie kurām viņa strādā, bet Misato, lai piesaistītu saimnieces uzmanību, “trenējas” dziedāt anime klasikas "Evangelion" tēmas dziesmu.

Rezultāts? Telefons ar vairāk nekā 500 šķietami neizskaidrojamu video un pabeigts darbs pie pirmā pilnmetrāžas projekta “Ziemeļu zvaigzne”. Animācijā svarīgs instruments bieži ir novērošana, atdarināšana un mazliet putna neatlaidības. 🐦✨

📍 Behind the Scenes: Repetition as a Superpower

Animator Darja and her parrot Misato both rely on references in their daily routines.

Darja records movement reference videos that later help bring the animation scenes she’s working on to life. Meanwhile, Misato practices singing the theme song from the anime classic "Evangelion", all in an effort to get her owner’s attention.

The result? A phone filled with more than 500 seemingly inexplicable videos and the completion of work on the first feature-length project, "The Northern Star".

In animation, some of the most important tools are observation, imitation, and a little bit of bird-like persistence. 🐦✨

Krāsošanas komandas papildspēki ir klāt! 🎨✨

No maija vidus mūsu studijai pievienojušies Latvijas Mākslas akadēmijas KAS nodaļas 2. kursa studenti — Rasa, Kate, Viktorija, Ance, Roberts, Sofija, Artūrs, Matīss, Emīlija un Dārta —, kuri savas prakses laikā strādā pie animācijas īsfilmas "Paisuma daba". Režisores un mākslinieces Ellas Mežules vadībā viņi krāso jau gatavos animācijas kadrus, soli pa solim pietuvojot filmu tās pabeigšanai.

Reinforcements for the Coloring Team Have Arrived! 🎨✨

Since mid-May, our studio has welcomed second-year students from the Animation Department of the Latvian Academy of Arts — Rasa, Kate, Viktorija, Ance, Roberts, Sofija, Artūrs, Matīss, Emīlija, and Dārta. As part of their internship, they are contributing to the animated short film "The Nature of Tide."

Under the guidance of director and artist Ella Mežule, the students are coloring completed animation frames, helping bring the film one step closer to completion with every frame they finish.

It's inspiring to see these young artists at work and to share knowledge and experience that support both their professional growth and the continued development of Latvia's animation industry. 💙

We're keeping our fingers crossed that this collaboration will lead to an outstanding result and become a valuable experience for everyone involved!

Šonedēļ mūzikas video “Mazie spārniņi” dodas uz Franciju, kur piedzīvos savu pirmizrādi starptautiskajā bērnu un jauniešu filmu festivālā Plein la Bobine! ✨🇫🇷

Festivāls norisinās divās pilsētās: Issoire (27.–30. maijs) un La Bourboule (31. maijs–5. jūnijs), pulcējot filmas no visas pasaules un jaunos skatītājus, kuri iepazīst kino ne tikai caur seansiem, bet arī radošām darbnīcām, tikšanām ar filmu autoriem un dažādiem interaktīviem notikumiem. “Mazie spārniņi” būs daļa no programmas, kas iedvesmo bērnus atvērt savu iztēli un piepildīt “koferi” ar jaunām emocijām, stāstiem un zināšanām par kino pasauli. 🧳🎬

This week, the music video “Little Wings” is heading to France, where it will have its premiere at the international children’s and youth film festival Plein la Bobine! ✨🇫🇷

The festival takes place in two cities: Issoire (May 27–30) and La Bourboule (May 31–June 5), bringing together films from around the world and young audiences who discover cinema not only through screenings, but also through creative workshops, meetings with filmmakers, and various interactive events.

“Little Wings” will be part of a program that inspires children to open their imagination and fill their “suitcase” with new emotions, stories, and knowledge about the world of cinema. 🧳🎬

Testa skrīnings = pirmā tikšanās ar filmu uz lielā ekrāna ✨

Brīdis, kad komanda pirmo reizi ierauga, kā sadzīvo otas triepieni, faktūras un līniju kustība īsfilmā "Paisuma daba".

Kopā satikās režisore, māksliniece un scenāriste Ella Mežule, animatore Taiga Zīle, krāsotājas Elīze Šnīdere un Nikola Smikerste, kā arī darba balss Kārlis Upītis.

Maza komandas ieelpa pirms finiša taisnes pabeigšanas maratonā.

A moment when the team gets to see for the first time how the brushstrokes, textures, and movement of lines come together in the short film Paisuma daba.

Joining the screening were director, artist, and screenwriter Ella Mežule, animator Taiga Zīle, painters Elīze and Nikola, as well as temp voice actor Kārlis Upītis.

Iepazīsties ar Ralfu, filigrāno kustību meistaru un vienu no filmas “Ziemeļu zvaigzne” animatoriem. Šī ir viņa otrā pilnmetrāžas animācijas filma, un viens no lielākajiem izaicinājumiem projektā bija pielāgoties darbam vektoru animācijas programmā.

Protams, neviens radošais process nenotiek bez uzticama uzrauga. 🐾 Kamēr Ralfs iedveš dzīvību filmas varoņos, Gera rūpīgi pieskata darbu no pašas ērtākās vietas, saimnieka klēpja.

✨ If your pet could choose your profession, what would it be?

Meet Ralfs, the master of subtle movement and one of the animators behind The Northern Star. This is already his second feature-length animated film, and one of the biggest challenges on this project was adapting to working with vector-based animation software.

Of course, no creative process happens without a trusted supervisor. 🐾 While Ralfs brings the characters to life, Gera keeps a close eye on everything from the coziest spot possible, curled up in her human’s lap.
