Discord releases free Social SDK for game developers at GDC

Discord is releasing a Social SDK, a free tool for game developers that integrates the platform’s renowned social features directly into their games. The announcement was made at the annual Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco.

“While the industry continues to face hard challenges, GDC stays strong as a place where the most passionate, creative minds from across the world come together and connect over their love of games,” said Stanislav Vishnevskiy, CTO and Co-Founder of Discord.

The Discord Social SDK aims to empower game developers of all sizes by allowing them to incorporate Discord’s social functionalities, enhancing multiplayer experiences and player connectivity.

Key features of the Discord Social SDK
The SDK – compatible with games built using C++, Unreal Engine, and Unity – currently supports Windows 11+ and macOS, with console and mobile support planned for future releases. It leverages the same technology used by Discord’s over 200 million monthly active users.

Unified friends list: This feature consolidates Discord and in-game friends lists, enabling players to stay connected across platforms.
Deeplink game invites: Players can send direct invites from their in-game friends list to Discord friends, facilitating seamless party, lobby, and session joins.
Rich presence: This displays a player’s gaming activity on their Discord profile, enabling one-click game joins and increasing game visibility.
Flexible account requirements: Players can enjoy unified social experiences without needing a Discord account, though account linking is available for enhanced engagement.

Arm unleashes ASR upscaling to boost mobile gaming performance

At GDC, Arm launched ASR (Accuracy Super Resolution)—an upscaling technology promising to boost mobile gaming performance without compromising fidelity and battery life.

For years, a fundamental challenge has plagued mobile game developers: how to strike the perfect balance between visuals and performance. Thanks to ASR, that difficult choice will be less of a problem.

First announced last year, Arm ASR is now available to all mobile game developers. Plugins for both Unreal Engine and Unity are expected to be released later this year.

What exactly is Arm ASR?
ASR is an intelligent upscaling solution crafted by Arm to enhance gaming performance without any detrimental impact on visual fidelity. The technology works by rendering specific stages of a frame at a lower resolution before intelligently upscaling them.

This process significantly reduces the workload on the GPU and lowers power consumption. Crucially, this efficiency allows for the implementation of complex graphics and advanced lighting effects on mobile devices.

The result is that developers can achieve visually richer mobile games while ensuring efficient resource utilisation and effectively combating thermal throttling, a common issue that can negatively affect the overall gaming experience for users.

To encourage widespread adoption and foster innovation, Arm ASR is being made available as an open-source solution under the MIT license. This invitation extends to developers across the globe, encouraging them to explore its capabilities and discover how it can elevate their games.

Havok intros affordable pricing for indie game development studios

This new structure marks a departure from traditional licensing models and could have a major impact on game development, particularly for smaller and indie studios who may have found Havok’s technologies financially out of reach.

“We are excited to announce a new pricing model that makes our industry leading technologies available to a broader range of studios for a per-title fee of $50,000,” explained the company. “Havok technologies are used by most of the world’s largest game franchises, and we are excited to see what a new range of innovative studios will achieve with Havok Physics and Havok Navigation.”

The new licensing model is presented as “straightforward with no royalty” and is available to game companies with per-title budgets up to $20 million. This upper limit suggests that while targeting smaller and mid-sized studios, Havok is still positioning itself as a premium technology provider for a substantial segment of the market.

Furthermore, Havok is keen to cater to developers already embedded within popular game engines. The company highlighted the availability of “plug-in versions of Havok Physics and Havok Navigation for Unreal Engine.”

This new pricing model offers several key advantages for game development studios:
