Dollar maintains gains ahead of U.S. inflation data

Singapore – The US dollar held onto its overnight gains on Wednesday as markets awaited key inflation data expected this week, a major indicator for the direction of US monetary policy in the coming months.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback’s performance against a basket of six major currencies, stood at 97.834, little changed from its previous levels.
Despite its current gains, the index has fallen by about 10% since the beginning of 2025, due to volatile US trade policies and growing expectations of interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve, which has diminished the dollar’s appeal as an investment asset.
In currency markets, the euro slipped slightly to $1.16985 after falling 0.5% in the previous session, while the British pound was steady at $1.3522. The Japanese yen saw little change, holding at 147.42 per dollar.

Conversely, the Australian dollar continued its positive performance, trading at $0.6587, approaching the seven-week high it reached during Tuesday’s session.
Markets are anticipating two important US inflation reports this week, which are expected to directly influence the Federal Reserve’s decisions on future interest rates amid an economic environment of caution and anticipation.

Al-Shuhoumi calls for consolidating universal human values to rebuild Libyan society

Economic expert Suleiman Al-Shahoumi said that societal values and common bonds form the underlying basis for the interaction and collective action of the masses, citing what Gustave Le Bon discussed in his book “The Psychology of Crowds” about the role of religion, customs, and inherited behaviors in shaping societies’ reactions when they are infringed upon.
In a Facebook post, Al-Shahoumi explained that these elements are sometimes exploited to steer crowds in specific directions, making the “collective mind” the primary driver of mobilization. This is achieved by stirring emotions and transforming them into demands purported to represent the people’s interests, whether to achieve prosperity, enhance security, support religious or regional tendencies, or to attain power.
He noted that a rational individual might abandon their conscious awareness to respond to the will of an incited crowd, even if the methods used are unethical or inhumane. In fact, they may sometimes be characterized by chaos and the exclusion of other segments of society.
Al-Shahoumi stressed that the priority in the phase of rebuilding Libyan society lies in establishing a system of shared cultural and human values that reinforces clear pillars and unifying principles within the collective mind, thereby supporting peaceful coexistence.

Member of the House of Representatives Abdussalam Nassiya joins the Arab Parliamentary Excellence Committee

Cairo – Member of the House of Representatives, Abdulsalam Nassia, was chosen as a member of the Arab Parliamentary Excellence Award committee representing the state of Libya. This occurred during the 39th session of the Executive Committee of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union, which was held yesterday, Tuesday, in the Egyptian capital, Cairo.
The meeting’s agenda included discussing the report of the Union’s General Secretariat on the previous session, and reports from the ad hoc Parliamentary Diplomatic Committee concerning amendments to the internal regulations of the Arab Group within the Inter-Parliamentary Union. Also discussed were the amendment of the voting mechanism for the emergency item of the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s General Assembly, and amendments to the Union’s internal system to align with its charter.
During the meeting, amendments to the organizational regulations of the Arab Parliamentary Excellence Award and the formation of its membership were also discussed, alongside the emergency item to be presented by the Arab Parliamentary Group at the 151st General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, scheduled for next October. Other topics included the Union’s draft budget for 2026 and determining the venue for the 40th session of the Executive Committee.
In his remarks, Nassia stressed the importance of rotating the membership of specialized committees stemming from the Executive Committee in a way that respects geopolitical distribution. He pointed out that the ninth of September marks the anniversary of the founding of the African Union in the city of Sirte, and called for a congratulatory message to be sent to the African Union to strengthen Arab-African relations. He also proposed holding the next meeting of the Executive Committee at the headquarters of the Libyan House of Representatives in Benghazi.

Report: Divisions and Corrupt Authority Keep Libya in a Spiral of Failure and Illusory Peace

An analytical report published by the British magazine Middle East Monitor has shed light on what it described as “Libya’s floundering between the wreckage of revolution and the mirage of reconstruction,” following the events of 2011 and the fall of the former regime.
The report indicated that Libya, home to Africa’s richest oil treasure, is suffering from the erosion of its oil wealth instead of benefiting its people, as the profits of exploration companies, amidst the chaos, have been diverted into channels of plunder, in the absence of a concept of nationhood. It explained that Libya’s oil enriches everyone except for ordinary citizens who face poverty, corruption, and violence.
The report added that Italy and France played “double games” driven by oil lust, poisoning any path towards unity. It noted that foreign powers sought to fill the vacuum after 2011 by deepening divisions and weakening Libyan sovereignty.
The report spoke of a fragmented power structure that stifles governance and elections and undermines hope, stating that the country is theoretically united but practically stuck in a fragile impasse. Democratic milestones are postponed for fear of losing influence, making democracy in Libya “a corrupt and endlessly postponed mirage.”
A Path Fraught with Obstacles

According to the report, reunification is only possible if tribal and factional tendencies are abandoned in favor of the nation. However, the path is filled with rubble, conflicting ambitions, and is guarded by an entrenched corrupt authority.
The report concluded by noting that the absence of a shared national vision or strong institutions will keep Libya stuck between its oil wealth and its deserts, with promises of prosperity always clashing with the reality of failure, violence, and an “illusory fragile peace.”

Al-Shaibani: Dbeibeh is a criminal who deliberately obstructed the reconstruction of Tawergha and compensation for its people so that they cannot return.

Member of the House of Representatives, Jaballah Al-Shaibani, commented on the death of a Tawerghan family, a mother and her five children, in the Ajdabiya camp following a fire that claimed their lives.
In a post on his personal page, Al-Shaibani said: “In the miserable Ajdabiya camp, which lacks the basic necessities for a humane life, a Tawerghan family of a mother and five children lost their lives, burned to death.”
Al-Shaibani held Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh, whom he described as a “criminal,” responsible for what happened, considering that he deliberately obstructed the reconstruction of Tawergha and the compensation of its people to prevent them from returning, despite the completion of all procedures and the matter only awaiting his approval.
Al-Shaibani concluded his statement by saying: “To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return. We ask Allah for their forgiveness and mercy, and for their relatives and the people of Tawergha, patience and solace… Getting rid of this criminal is a national duty.”

House of Representatives denies error in its expenditure report

The official spokesman for the House of Representatives, Abdullah Blihaq, denied the accuracy of the figure mistakenly included in the Central Bank of Libya’s report concerning the House’s expenditures for the period from January 1 to August 31, 2025, which amounted to 644,903,295.622 million Libyan Dinars.
Blihaq explained that the figure was the result of a typographical error and was corrected in communication with the management of the Central Bank of Libya.
The spokesman asserted that this figure was published by some websites and pages in an attempt to tarnish the House’s image in public opinion.
Blihaq called on all media institutions and specialists to verify the accuracy of information before publishing it to avoid misleading the public.

Health alert in Kufra after warnings of a cholera outbreak across the Sudanese border

Ismail al-Ayda, head of the emergency room at the Ministry of Health in the Government of Stability, said that the mobilization of health authorities in southeastern Libya came as a result of the announcement of alarming deaths by the Sudanese side, which reflects rising indicators of the cholera outbreak.
Al-Ayda explained in exclusive statements to “The New Arab” website that the city of Kufra is considered the most at risk as it is the closest Libyan city to the Sudanese border and a primary destination for Sudanese refugees.
Al-Ayda pointed out that the health institutions of the Kufra municipality responded days ago to orders to raise the state of emergency, stressing that the city has not recorded any cases so far.

He explained that preparations included equipping an isolation ward with a 40-bed capacity and an emergency and shelter department with a 120-bed capacity, in addition to providing solutions, serums, and supplies to handle any potential cases.
Comprehensive National Plan

Al-Ayda confirmed that the national emergency plan focuses primarily on the city of Kufra, as it is the first destination for those fleeing the war in Sudan. He noted that the plan involves several relevant ministries and bodies and is based on proactive monitoring and investigation measures.
Al-Ayda noted that field teams have intensified monitoring operations within Sudanese refugee gatherings, stressing that their increasing numbers pose an additional burden on the municipality and the Ministry of Health to provide necessary needs, especially healthcare.
He stressed that the Ministry of Health has called on international organizations to provide additional medical personnel to support monitoring and response efforts, noting that the crisis has regional and international dimensions, not just Libyan ones.
He affirmed that fears in Libya have increased after the World Health Organization announced the spread of cholera in more than 18 Sudanese states, with hundreds of deaths and thousands of cases.

Shalouf: The mobilization in the capital is nothing but a tool for confrontation with Bathily's plan and a serious attempt to derail the international path.

Political analyst Jamal Shalouf said that the increasing military build-up in the capital, Tripoli, especially after the explosion of an ammunition depot and the transfer of some forces out of the city, carries more than one message.
In a statement to the “Sputnik” agency, Shalouf explained that these movements represent a message of reassurance to the forces massed inside the capital that there is scope to increase troop numbers. At the same time, it is a message that the option of a military solution is still on the table, as well as being a means of pressure on international powers involved in the Libyan file to achieve gains through a policy of blackmail.
He added that the presence of armed formations and the proliferation of weapons in Tripoli do not allow for security stability, pointing out that these forces are motivated more by spoils than any other objective, making them a direct danger to civilian lives. He warned of the possibility that some of these formations might resort to acts of brigandage amid what he described as a serious security deterioration that makes the capital seem as if it is “standing on the brink of a major crisis, awaiting the outbreak of war at any moment.”
Shalouf believes that the Dbeibeh government bears direct responsibility for this build-up, while the role of the Presidential Council remains governed by the will of international powers, limited to responding to their attempts to contain the crisis. He added that the government sees military operations and control by force as a means to stay in power.
Shalouf pointed out that there is a path led by the UN mission as a front for the international will, and that the plan of UN envoy Hanna Tetteh, which includes changing the government in a short period, could form the beginning of a new political path leading the country towards elections. However, he stressed that this path clashes with the survival of the Dbeibeh government, which makes the continuation of security turmoil and the build-up in Tripoli a tool to obstruct the international path and prevent its progress.
