In 2014, the remains of a woman were uncovered as part of a larger excavation of over 100 skeletons in a 6th-century AD Anglo-Saxon cemetery located in Oakington, Cambridgeshire. This archaeological dig, which spanned from 2012 to 2014, was highlighted in Season 3, Episode 1 of the series “Digging for Britain.”
In a surprising turn of events, a yellow pipe, presumed to be a gas line, was found to have been drilled directly through an ancient burial site. This particular skeleton was situated near a modern road, which aligns with the current underground infrastructure providing services to the village.
The installation of the yellow pipe was carried out using conventional directional drilling techniques, where machinery creates a long tunnel for the pipes between small access points, resulting in less disruption than the traditional ""cut and fill"" approach. Although geophysical sensing methods are used to detect any anomalies or archaeological features before drilling, they are not always effective in locating human remains, making it likely that the installer was unaware of disturbing the ancient burial site.
During a meticulous 13-hour excavation process, archaeologists observed the precision with which the pipe had penetrated the burial, causing minimal disturbance and narrowly avoiding the grave goods by just a few centimeters.
