University Mohammed VI Polytechnic (UM6P) has been shortlisted for the Times Higher Education (THE) Awards Arab World 2026 in the Outstanding Contribution to Environmental Leadership category.

This recognition reflects UM6P's institution-wide approach to sustainability, where environmental leadership is embedded across campus operations, research, education, innovation, and community engagement.

As the first African university to achieve both STARS Silver and Gold certification, UM6P continues to position its Benguerir campus as a living laboratory for sustainable solutions adapted to arid environments. From 25 LEED-aligned buildings and a dedicated MAD 10 million Sustainable Development Fund, to GHG Protocol-based carbon accounting, sustainability is translated into measurable and independently verified impact.

Our research ecosystem drives real-world change through more than 1900 SDG-aligned publications, pioneering initiatives such as Climate Impulse, the world's first zero-emission round-the-world flight, and policy contributions through international platforms including the U7+ Alliance.

University Mohammed VI Polytechnic achieved a milestone in its journey toward advancing sustainability. According to the Times Higher Education (THE) Sustainability Impact Ratings 2026, UM6P is now ranked among the Top 200 universities worldwide, marking an important progression since the University's entry into this global ranking in 2024, when it was ranked among the Top 1000 universities.

Today, UM6P stands as the first university in Morocco and in North Africa, alongside the region's highest-performing institutions. Across the African continent, UM6P is ranked 4th, among other universities placed within the 101–200 band globally.

The THE Sustainability Impact Ratings 2026 assessed 1,646 universities worldwide, evaluating their contributions to sustainable development by measuring performance against the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). UM6P achieved particularly notable success in SDG 1 – No Poverty, ranking 40th globally among 900 participating universities.

This achievement places the University among the world's leading institutions advancing poverty alleviation through research, education, outreach, and community engagement.

Strong performances were also recorded across several other SDGs:

- SDG 2 – Zero Hunger: 301–400
- SDG 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation: 101–200
- SDG 7 – Affordable and Clean Energy: 201–300

UM6P Sustainable Development Office is proud to launch UM6P Junior Tech, a new initiative born from the synergy between Hourouf by SDO and Junior Explorer by Open Minds.

In partnership with the IT Department, the initiative aims to expand access to digital learning opportunities for students from public schools across the Rhamna region. A dedicated computer room has been equipped on the UM6P Benguerir campus with modern computers, providing a dynamic space where young learners can explore technology and develop essential digital skills.

To ensure meaningful learning experiences, the initiative also provides a dedicated instructor who will lead computer literacy classes, introducing students to the fundamentals of digital technology and helping them build the confidence needed to navigate an increasingly digital world.

UM6P Junior Tech reflects a shared commitment to educational equity, digital inclusion, and youth empowerment. By combining resources, expertise, and a common purpose, we are creating new pathways for students to learn, explore, and unlock their potential.

On June 16, the Sustainable Development Office (SDO) at UM6P celebrated the completion of the 6th Cohort of the Sustainable Development Makers (SDMs) Program, bringing together a new generation of sustainability ambassadors committed to driving positive change across the UM6P ecosystem.

This cohort achieved remarkable results, with 196 applicants, 34 active SDMs, 12 projects implemented, and over 542 hours invested in sustainability-related initiatives, demonstrating a strong commitment to creating positive social and environmental impact. Participants worked on a variety of sustainability topics, including biodiversity conservation, environmental awareness, waste management, community engagement, and sustainable lifestyles.

The ceremony also recognized the cohort's top performers:
- 1st place: Aymane Stitou - Culture.ED
- 2nd place: Alae-Eddine Moumen - Africa Business School (ABS)
- 3rd place: Mohammed Reda Grich - Faculty of Governance, Economics and Social Sciences (FGSES)

From June 12th to 14th, Sustainability Lab 2.0 brought together passionate students, innovators, and changemakers from across Morocco for three days of collaboration, learning, and innovation focused on advancing sustainability solutions.

Organized by the Climate Awareness Club at UM6P in collaboration with UM6P - Student Organizations, Leadership and Engagement (SOLE), UM6P - Africa Business School, and UM6P Sustainable Development Office, the event provided a dynamic platform for participants to address two key sustainability challenges: Sustainable Tourism and Natural Ecosystem Protection.

Throughout the lab, participants engaged in interactive workshops, collaborative discussions, and solution-design activities aimed at developing innovative and impactful responses to real-world environmental and societal issues. The experience encouraged interdisciplinary thinking, teamwork, and the exploration of practical approaches to building more resilient and sustainable communities.

By fostering creativity, collaboration, and action, Sustainability Lab 2.0 demonstrated the power of youth engagement in shaping solutions for a more sustainable future and protecting the natural ecosystems upon which communities depend.

𝐒𝐃𝐌𝐬 𝐁𝐢𝐨𝐝𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐓𝐨𝐮𝐫: 𝐃𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐬 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐣𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐬

On June 4th, the Sustainable Development Makers (SDMs) participated in a Biodiversity Tour at the UM6P Rabat Campus to discover and explore the biodiversity initiatives implemented across the campus environment.

The tour highlighted several projects designed to support local ecosystems and enhance biodiversity on campus. Participants visited insect shelters that provide habitats for pollinators and other beneficial insects, birdhouses installed to support local bird populations, and the campus botanical garden, which showcases a variety of plant species. They also discovered the informational signage deployed throughout the campus green spaces, aimed at raising awareness of the botanical species present and their ecological importance.

Through these initiatives, participants gained a deeper understanding of biodiversity conservation, nature-based solutions, and the role that campuses can play in protecting and restoring ecosystems.

In addition to the biodiversity-focused initiatives, participants had the opportunity to discover other sustainability projects implemented by the Sustainable Development Office. These included the Solar Tree, which demonstrates the integration of renewable energy solutions into campus life, and the Recycling Your Clothes initiative, which encourages members of the university community to donate unwanted clothing through dedicated collection boxes, promoting reuse and social impact.

On May 21st, ahead of the International Day for Biological Diversity (May 22nd), the Sustainable Development Office, through the Sustainable Development Makers Program, organized the Biodiversity Art Challenge at the UM6P Benguerir Campus.

This initiative brought together students in a creative competition to design artworks using materials from the University’s biodiversity ecosystem, exploring themes such as reuse of natural materials, biodiversity-inspired art, and ecosystem preservation.

Through artistic expression, the challenge promoted environmental awareness and highlighted the importance of biodiversity conservation and sustainable practices within the campus community.

As part of the initiative, five insect shelters were installed across the Benguerir campus. These shelters provide safe habitats for pollinators and beneficial insects, helping to support local biodiversity, enhance ecological balance, and promote urban ecosystem health.

By combining art, education, and ecological action, this initiative reflects UM6P’s strong commitment to environmental responsibility and student-driven sustainability engagement.

On the 18th of May, the Hassan II International Center for Environmental Training organized the visit of the IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC) Chair, bringing together Moroccan IUCN members and key stakeholders for a strategic dialogue at UM6P.

The session provided a platform for exchange on global and national biodiversity priorities, conservation challenges, and evolving governance frameworks, fostering meaningful dialogue between institutional actors and IUCN representatives.

It also included the participation of five Sustainable Development Makers, with one student sharing reflections on youth perspectives and their vision for future engagement in biodiversity conservation.

The discussions highlighted the importance of collaborative action, knowledge sharing, and strengthened multi-stakeholder engagement to advance species conservation and environmental governance.

This initiative reflects a shared commitment to supporting biodiversity conservation efforts and fostering inclusive dialogue that integrates institutional expertise and youth perspectives.

On May 18th, the Sustainable Development Office, through its Green Schools Program, in collaboration with the Agricultural Innovation and Technology Transfer Center (AITTC), organized a tree-planting workshop at Bouchane Primary School, facilitated by a Sustainable Development Maker.

The session brought together 20 students and aimed to promote environmental awareness and community engagement through hands-on sustainability action. Participants took part in a planting activity during which 200 medicinal and aromatic plants were planted on site, contributing to the enhancement of local biodiversity and the creation of greener school environments.

Through this initiative, students strengthened their connection with nature while being introduced to practical sustainable practices at the community level. By combining environmental education with field-based action, the workshop enabled participants to actively contribute to ecosystem preservation and broader sustainable development efforts.
