Only twelve examples left Chevrolet's St. Louis assembly plant with the clandestine RPO ZR2 Special Purpose LS6 Engine Package, and just two were specified as convertibles. This mysterious offering received no advance publicity, road tests, or leaked photographs before its quiet 1971 debut.

Nicknamed "Zora's Racer" after Corvette Chief Engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov, the package followed the competition-oriented blueprint established by the legendary L88.

The ZR2 centered around the 454 cubic inch LS6 big-block V-8 rated at 425 horsepower, paired exclusively with the Muncie M22 close-ratio four-speed manual transmission (known as the "Rock Crusher" for its straight-cut gears and distinctive whine).

Heavy-duty power disc brakes and F41 Special Suspension with revised springs, shocks, and front and rear anti-roll bars addressed handling demands. An aluminum radiator without the standard fan shroud improved cooling capacity.
