Algerian novelist Kamel Daoud hailed the release of French-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal as a moment of “deep and sincere emotion,” calling it “the freedom of a writer is the freedom of a whole people.”
Sansal, who had been imprisoned in Algeria since November 2024, was granted a pardon by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune and is now in Germany for medical treatment.
Daoud suggested the pardon could be “a first step toward calmer relations” between Algeria and France, while highlighting the symbolic importance of freedom of expression.
