King Mohammed VI chaired a religious ceremony Monday at the Royal Palace in Rabat to mark the eve of Eid Al Mawlid Annabawi, accompanied by Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan, Prince Moulay Rachid, and Prince Moulay Ahmed, according to Morocco’s Press Agency (MAP).

The ceremony featured Quranic recitations and praises of the Prophet Muhammad. Minister of Endowments and Islamic Affairs Ahmed Toufiq also delivered a speech reviewing the activities of the Supreme Council of Ulema and local councils of Ulema, or religious scholars.

The ceremony was attended by the head of government, the speakers of both houses of Parliament, advisors to the King, members of the government, representatives of the diplomatic corps of Islamic countries accredited to Morocco, senior officers of the general staff of the Royal Armed Forces, and several civilian and military dignitaries.

Morocco will open its 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign against Gabon in Rabat on Sept. 25 before facing Lesotho in South Africa four days later, according to Morocco's Press Agency (MAP).

The Atlas Lions will face Gabon at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium at 8 p.m. on Sept. 25. South African referee Abongile Tom will officiate the match.

Morocco will then travel to Bloemfontein, South Africa, to face Lesotho at Toyota Stadium at 3 p.m. local time on Sept. 29. Cameroon referee Abdou Abdel Mefire will oversee the game.

King Mohammed VI has granted royal pardons to 634 people convicted by courts across Morocco on the occasion of Eid Al Mawlid Annabawi, according to Morocco's Press Agency (MAP).

The Ministry of Justice said 619 people received pardons under the main decree, including 462 detainees and 157 people at liberty.

Among those in prison, 13 received pardons covering the remainder of their prison sentences, while 449 received sentence reductions. Among those at liberty, 28 received pardons covering their prison terms or the remaining portions of those terms, and 13 received pardons on their prison terms while retaining their fines.

Morocco was awarded the African Tennis Confederation's (CAT) Nations Trophy for the eighth consecutive year, the Royal Moroccan Tennis Federation (FRMT) said, according to Morocco's Press Agency (MAP).

Morocco earned the distinction through performances by its national teams in individual and team competitions across several age categories.

Morocco will return to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) on Sept. 20, with clocks set back one hour at 2 a.m., according to Barlamane.com.

The government decided in June to end the country's permanent use of GMT+1. Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch said the move responded to public concerns over the additional hour.

Under the current system, Morocco uses GMT+1 year-round, except during Ramadan, when clocks temporarily return to GMT.

Morocco will resume soft wheat imports on Sept. 16 after suspending them during the summer to prioritize domestic production, according to a circular from the National Interprofessional Office for Cereals and Pulses (ONICL) cited by Reuters.

The government will provide import subsidies through Dec. 31 under a mechanism designed to ensure soft wheat is imported at a reference price of MAD 270 per quintal, with benchmark origins including France, Germany, Argentina, and the United States.

France is preparing to extend its mobile phone ban to high schools from the start of the new school year, government spokesperson Maud Bregeon said Monday, according to Le Monde.

French President Emmanuel Macron has decided to implement legislation approved by parliament in July that prohibits mobile phone use in high schools. The French Constitutional Council allowed that measure to stand while striking down another provision of the same law that sought to ban social media access for children under 15.

The phone ban could take effect as early as next week, providing a legal framework for restricting mobile phone use among high school students.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham traveled to Ukraine on Monday on his first overseas trip since taking office to announce new British support to help Kyiv improve its domestic production of long-range missiles, according to Reuters.

Burnham will co-chair a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing, a group of countries supporting Ukraine, and meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the visit.

"Ukraine's security is our security," Burnham said, pledging continued British support for Kyiv.

King Mohammed VI will lead a religious ceremony Monday evening at the Royal Palace in Rabat commemorating Mawlid, the anniversary of the birth of the Prophet Muhammad, according to the Ministry of the Royal Household, Protocol and Chancellery.

The ceremony will begin at Maghrib, or sunset, on Monday, Aug. 24, corresponding to 11 Rabi al-Awwal 1448 on the Islamic calendar.

Morocco will observe Mawlid on Tuesday, Aug. 25, corresponding to 12 Rabi al-Awwal 1448, according to the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs.

Six European Union countries are calling for a windfall tax on oil companies as disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz and rising oil prices push industry profits higher.

According to a document seen by Euronews, Germany, Italy, Austria, Poland, Spain, and Portugal have sent a joint letter to Ireland, which currently holds the presidency of the Council of the EU, urging the bloc to consider a windfall tax on oil companies.

The ministers asked for the issue to be discussed at next month's meeting of EU finance ministers in Dublin.

"Oil companies are enjoying overall profitability and margins on refined products that exceed the rise in crude oil prices," the letter said.
