Finished in Pearl Green/Yellow PPG first seen on the 1992 Diablo Roadster Prototipo, this SE30 is one of just two built in the color. Chassis #076 was ordered through Lamborghini’s Carte Blanche program with a Verde and Grigio Alcantara interior, factory fire extinguisher system, four-point harnesses, and even a standard Diablo ashtray and cigarette lighter, details rarely found on an SE30.

Across multiple generations, car weight has steadily crept upward, often far beyond what the same nameplates used to be. A 1980s BMW 3 Series weighed around 2,600 lb (1,180 kg), the early 2000s E46 M3 was ~3,250 lb (1,475 kg), and the modern G80 M3 sits at around 3,900 lb (1,770 kg). Even compact cars are not immune, with older Civics at around 2,300–2,600 lb (1,040–1,180 kg) now exceeding 3,000 lb (1,360 kg) in modern form.

A major driver is regulation, and it stacks weight in layers. Crash safety rules have evolved from basic frontal protection to full offset impacts, side pole crashes, and pedestrian impact standards, forcing cars to adopt reinforced A- and B-pillars, high-strength steel safety cages, side-impact beams, and extensive crumple zones that absorb energy instead of transferring it. Airbag requirements expanded from a single driver airbag in the 1990s to multi-airbag systems covering front, side, curtain, knee, and even center deployments, each adding modules, sensors, and inflators. Emissions and efficiency rules add further mass through turbocharging hardware, particulate filters (GPF/DPF), catalytic systems, larger cooling packages, and in many cases hybrid systems with battery packs and power electronics. Layer on NVH regulations (sound insulation, acoustic glass), electronic driver assists (radar, lidar, cameras, control units), and stricter lighting systems (LED arrays, adaptive headlights), and the result is a car that is structurally safer, cleaner, and more capable, but inevitably heavier.

The Porsche PFM 3200 was Porsche’s attempt to bring 911 technology into aviation during the 1980s. Based on the flat-six from the Porsche 911 Turbo, the 3.2-liter engine used a reduction gearbox so it could rev much higher than normal aircraft engines while still turning a conventional propeller. Naturally aspirated versions made around 210 hp, while turbo models produced about 240 hp, impressive numbers for the time. Porsche packed the engine with features rarely seen in general aviation back then, including electronic fuel injection, automatic altitude compensation, single-lever controls, and fully aerobatic oil and fuel systems. The engine was mainly used in aircraft developed with Mooney International Corporation, but despite the performance and smoothness, the project ended up being too expensive and complicated for most private aircraft owners.

In 1985, Gemballa transformed a canary-yellow BMW 635CSi into a one-off widebody coupe reportedly commissioned for Uday Hussein, Saddam Hussein’s eldest son. The car was pure 1980s excess: handmade flares, deep side skirts, huge rear wheels, quad exhausts, Recaro seats, and an interior loaded with TVs, electronics, and leather almost everywhere possible. The total cost reportedly reached around 240,000 Deutsche Marks (equal to roughly $600,000 today), with a massive portion spent on Gemballa’s custom work alone. After spending years inside Hussein’s collection, the BMW resurfaced in 2003 during the Iraq War, photographed abandoned and covered in dust behind razor wire in Baghdad while U.S. soldiers inspected it. Since then, the car has largely vanished from public view.

The Camel Trophy began in 1980 as a small expedition-style challenge in the Amazon before growing into one of the harshest automotive endurance events of its time. Over the next two decades, teams piloted heavily prepared Land Rover Defenders, Discoverys, and Range Rovers across remote terrain in places such as Papua New Guinea, Siberia, Mongolia, and Guyana. Deep mud, collapsed trails, river crossings, and mechanical failures were all part of the experience, with crews often spending as much time recovering vehicles as actually driving them. It was never really about outright speed. Success depended more on navigation, teamwork, and simply getting through terrain that was barely passable in the first place.

More than twenty years after the final official edition, the event still holds a cult following among expedition and Land Rover enthusiasts. That legacy continues through tribute drives inspired by the original format, including the Camel Trophy Kalimantan Tribute in Indonesia, where participants recreated the same muddy jungle atmosphere that made the old expeditions so infamous. Even today, many classic overland builds still borrow the same look, from roof racks and auxiliary lights to jerry cans and recovery gear.
