VOICES

VOICES Our monthly magazine has a very simple, yet powerful mission – to be the voice of youth.

VOICES is produced in Skopje, Macedonia, and published online every month and four times per year as a printed edition. It is coordinated in Volunteers Centre Skopje and created completely by local and international volunteers. Since volunteers are always changing, this 15-year journey has been full of diverse nationalities and personalities – and those changes are reflected in the magazine. The d

🇪🇺 In August 2022, just after turning nineteen, I boarded a train with nothing but a backpack, a mobile travel pass, and an entire continent ahead of me. For three weeks, I traveled across Europe alone, visiting thirteen cities in ten countries, sometimes only for a day. My ticket to ride was an Interrail pass I had won through the European Commission’s DiscoverEU program, a contest that gives eighteen-year-olds the chance to explore Europe by train for free. This program was launched in 2018 and is now part of the Erasmus+ program 2021-2027.

❓ Can you count to ten in a language you learned in school? How many bones are there in the human body? Who was the first president of the United States? When was your first date? What is the formula for the perimeter of a circle? What is the capital of Australia?

🧠 Asking these questions triggers your brain. Sometimes you know the answer because you remember it; other times, you just forget or simply don’t know. After all, when are you ever going to use some of this information?

Let’s dive into the fascinating secrets of our brain. Indeed, memories are not stored in a single location of this complex organ. But have you asked yourself why you forget or how do you remember?

"Since I arrived in Macedonia, I have felt a small shift inside me. It might be the way people open me their doors without hesitation, or how a shared drink can turn strangers into something closer. The welcome I’ve received here has been more than politeness, it feels like a real invitation to belong, to be part of a rhythm I didn’t grow up with but somehow recognise.

This issue of our magazine gathers voices and explores stories and connections that cross borders, both literal and emotional. From a volunteer’s journey in the sun-soaked shores of Aruba, to the quiet yet profound lessons of yoga or the subtle ways music can heal our minds and hearts."

New month, new VOICES! Embrace the September days while having a journey through pages of your favorite youth magazine! 🤩

As temperatures soar past 40°C in many French cities, one department remains curiously out of sync with the rest of the country. On the far western edge of mainland France, in the coastal stretches of Finistère, café terraces are full, locals wear sweaters in the evening, and thermometers rarely climb above 25°C. Here, people don't talk about heatwaves but about when it's finally warm enough to take a dip in the Atlantic.

👩🏻‍💻 “I want to learn to yodel,” said Natalia as she was walking out of the room.
I laughed. It’s always just the crazy things you say you want to try, but you never actually do. I say it, you say it, Natalia says it too. You go to a concert of your favorite music band and think how great it would be if you could play guitar like the people on the stage. Or you see a magician perform a card trick and think how cool it would be to do it the next time you are playing card games with your friends. But it’s just a thought. And thoughts are fluid; most of them never come back.

🇰🇷 King Sejong is now considered one of the greatest rulers in Korean history. A man of letters, he deeply cared about the well-being of his people. Seeing how illiteracy hindered knowledge, in 1443 he decided to create a new Korean alphabet.

🪭I’ve always been drawn to things that don’t fit. To spaces that are too loud, too soft, too strange. To people who don’t behave or who behave too much.
To art that doesn’t apologize, that’s why I love cabaret.
Not just a stage or a performance.
But a way of being expressive, unapologetic, a little sideways.
It’s theatre, but looser. Music, but embodied. Dance, but charged with meaning.

😡 All emotions are necessary. Even the “negative” ones – sadness, fear, disgust, anger… But for some reason, I feel like I neglected the last one for most of my life. This how this zine* came to life – as my attempt to put my chaotic thoughts onto paper and admit that there are, in fact, things that make me mad.

🎓 University campuses are not just spaces where academic knowledge is transferred. Beyond course schedules and lecture halls lies a world full of opportunities. At the heart of this world are student clubs. These communities offer students meaningful opportunities for personal development and social belonging in a wide range of areas including social responsibility, culture, arts, sports and entrepreneurship. Within a club, students can organize events, work in teams, meet new people and even take their first steps into the professional world. Today dozens of different clubs active on campuses create unique spaces for young people to discover and improve themselves.

🤔 As I’m trying to figure out what I will do with my life in 4 months, once my year of volunteering in VCS will be over, I find myself doing a lot of self-reflections.
What am I supposed to do with my life? Why is life so confusing? What is my place in the world? Where do I want to live? Do I see my future in France, or abroad?

Probably at least one of you already had such thoughts, especially nowadays, as we are exposed to so many options but at the same time confronted with the realities of the current world. And while having so many options for what you can do with your life is nice, it can create a “choice overload”, that is how having too many options can make it harder to make one.

VOICES

VOICES is a monthly magazine for all young people around the world and it is a project of Volunteers Centre Skopje. It was created to provide more opportunities for young people.

The creators of this project are volunteers working in Volunteers Centre Skopje. They come from different European countries to do here their European Solidarity Corps volunteering program under Erasmus+. The volunteers are creating VOICES every month from scratch; coordinating meetings and the content of the edition, writing articles and designing the magazine.
