Tatmadaw recaptures Naunghkio after months of clashes with TNLA and PDF Forces

Naunghkio has been retaken by the Tatmadaw after nearly a year of intense fighting with the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), Mandalay-PDF, and Danu PDF. These groups had temporarily seized control of the town and surrounding areas since August 10, 2024, occupying villages, schools, and monasteries near the Taung Kham military base and launching coordinated attacks on military outposts.

Crossing hours of Thanlwin Bridge (Mawlamyine) adjusted

The crossing hours of Thanlwin Bridge (Mawlamyine), a bridge over the Thanlwin River that connects Mawlamyine town in Mon State and Mottama town in Paung Township, has been adjusted from July 16, according to sources.

The closing hours of Thanlwin Bridge (Mawlamyine), which was previously set from 9 pm to 5 am, has been changed from 8 pm to 6 am, according to sources close to the security forces.

The change in the bridge crossing hours at Thanlwin Bridge (Mawlamyine) has caused difficulties for ambulances, trucks, and cargo vehicles, according to local residents.

A green goods trader from Mottama said that the bridge was previously closed at 9 pm, so trucks carrying green goods from the Mottama side could reach Mawlamyine before 9 pm and return to Mottama. Now, since the bridge has been closed earlier, it is too late to go to Mawlamyine and then return to Mottama, so they have to spend the night in Mawlamyine itself.

He continued, “There is another way. For example, if the waterway is not closed, we can transport the green goods by water. If the waterway is closed, we will have to arrange a different way to send green goods to Mawlamyine.”

On the other hand, trucks and passenger vehicles driving at night in Thaton, Bilin and Kyaikto townships along the Yangon-Mawlamyine highway, have also been frequently attacked by mines and guns, and the bridge closure period has been extended due to security concerns, sources said.

Similarly, the Attharan Bridge, which connects Kwechangone Ward and Nyaungpin Sake Ward (Mawlamyine Industrial Zone) on the Mawlamyine-Hpa-an highway, has been closed to traffic from 8 pm to 6 am.

In addition, a nighttime curfew has been imposed in Mawlamyine, Paung, Thaton, Bilin, and Kyaikto townships in Mon State.

Two earthquakes above magnitude 4 strike Mandalay Region in a single morning

Today, two earthquakes with magnitudes exceeding 4.0 struck Mandalay Region within a single morning, according to an announcement by the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology.

At 3:27 AM on July 16, an earthquake occurred about 4 miles southeast of Pyigyitagon Township in Mandalay Region, with a depth of 10 kilometers, as reported by the department.

Just hours later, at 7:52 AM, another earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale hit about 7 miles south-southeast of Wundwin Township, also at a depth of 10 kilometers.

These earthquakes are aftershocks following the major tremor over two months ago, marking the 205th and 206th subsequent quakes.

"It felt like being shaken awake while sleeping soundly. It was quite intense. As soon as I realized what was happening, I immediately ran outside. At this point, I don’t know when these earthquakes will ever stop," said a Mandalay resident.

Bridge in northern Shan State's Namhkio Town destroyed in explosion, say local media reports

On the evening of July 13, a bridge on the Goktwin road near Namhkio town in northern Shan State was destroyed in a bomb explosion, as reported by local news outlets.

The Goktwin road section between Kyaukme and Namhkio towns had been closed since July 10, prohibiting all vehicle traffic. On July 13, the bridge in Goktwin was blown up, according to local sources cited by regional media.

Reports suggest that after the military advanced close to Namhkio town, the TNLA and allied groups demolished the Goktwin bridge between Kyaukme and Namhkio for security reasons, as claimed by residents.

While local media have covered the destruction of the Goktwin bridge with accompanying photos, neither the military nor the TNLA has officially released statements regarding the incident. Currently, due to ongoing clashes, residents from villages such as Naungpit, Lonkyein, Lonwe, Pinpaw, and Zee Pin camps on the Naungpein side have been displaced and are seeking refuge.
