Power of Conjunction
စာတပိုဒ် ရေးကြည့်ကြစို့ဗျာ။ Let's write a paragraph.
I am a member of that gym. I can reserve a spot at fitness classes ahead of time. If I were not a member, I would have to arrive early to be sure I could attend. I would have to wait in line for the door to open to be sure I could attend.
ဒါကို ဖတ်ကြည့်ရင် ဘယ်လိုခံစားရမလဲမသိဘူး။ သေချာတာက ဖတ်ရတာအဆင်မချောဘူး၊ ထောက်တယ်ဆိုတာပါပဲ။
How do you feel about the paragraph? One thing for sure is; it's not flowing smoothly, and is hard to link the ideas.
ဒီလိုလေးပြင်ကြည့်ကြစို့ဗျာ။ Let's edit the paragraph.
As I am a member of that gym, I can reserve a spot at fitness classes ahead of time, but otherwise, I would have to both arrive early and wait in line for the door to open in order to be sure I could attend.
အဓိပ္ပာယ်ပိုရှိသွားပြီး စာကြောင်းတကြောင်းချင်းစီပိုချိတ်ဆက်မိသွားတာကို တွေ့ရပါလိမ့်မယ်။ It's obvious that the paragraph becomes more meaningful and the sentences and ideas link one another more.
ဒါ Conjunction (ဗမာသဒ္ဒါမှာ ပုဒ်ဆက်၊ စကားဆက်၊ သမ္ဗန္ဓ လို့ခေါ်တဲ့စကားလုံးတွေ) ရဲ့ အစွမ်းပါပဲ။ That's the power of words we know as "Conjunction".
ဒါဆိုရင် Conjunction ဘယ်နှမျိုးရှိမလဲ။ So, how many Conjunction types exist?
ပထမဆုံးဆိုရင် As the first one,
Coordinating conjunctions (C.C) - စာတစ်ကြောင်းမှာ တူညီတဲ့အဆင့်အတန်းတခုရှိတယ်ဆိုတာပြဖို့ စကားလုံးတွေ၊ ပုဒ်တွေနဲ့ ပုဒ်စုတွေကို သူတို့က ချိတ်ဆက်ပါတယ်။ they allow us to join the words, phrases and clauses that have the same rank in a sentence. အသုံးများတဲ့ C.C တွေကတော့ အတိုကောက် F.A.N.B.O.Y.S လို့လည်း သိကြတဲ့ for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so တို့ဖြစ်ပါတယ်။ The most common coordinating conjunctions are: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so (which can be memorised by the acronym F.A.N.B.O.Y.S).
One thing to notice is if you're using C.C, you will have to use "comma"(,) to separate two sentences as the sentences have the equal rank. If you don't, the sentences will become run-on sentences (two independent clauses are incorrectly separated by just a comma)
Example :
(a) The baby didn't want to wake up, nor get up to play.
(b) Mary was tired, yet she was keeping on work another project.
(c) They tried, but they failed.
ဒုတိယတခုဆိုရင် For the second one,
They are the conjunctions that link an independent clause and a dependent clause. Independent clause is a clause that gives the main message of the sentence and a dependent clause is a clause that supports the independent clause. အသုံးများတဲ့ S.C တွေကတော့ အတိုကောက် I S.A.W. A. W.A.B.U.B.U လို့လည်း သိကြတဲ့ If, since, as, while, although, whereas, before, until, because, until တို့ဖြစ်ပါတယ်။ The most common subordinating conjunctions are: If, since, as, while, although, whereas, before, until, because, until (which can be memorised by the acronym I. S.A.W. A. W.A.B.U.B.U).
Example :
(a) I can stay out until the clock strikes twelve.
(b) Before he leaves, he makes sure his room is clean.
(c) Whereas we usually go out for New Year’s Eve, this year we decided to celebrate at home.
သတိထားရမှာတခုက S.C တွေကို ဝါကျအစဆုံးမှာသုံးမယ်ဆိုရင် independent clause မတိုင်ခင်မှာ comma သုံးရပါတယ်။ One thing to notice is if we use S.C at the beginning of the sentence, we need to use comma (,) at the middle of the sentence. Please look at emaple sentence b.
တတိယနဲ့ နောက်ဆုံးတခုဆိုရင် As the third and last one,
Correlative conjunction (Cr.C) : သူတို့တွေကတော့ grammar အရ တူတဲ့ ပုဒ်တွေကို ကန့်သတ်၊ ချိတ်ဆက် ပေးရာမှာသုံးတဲ့ Conjunction အတွဲတွေဖြစ်ပါတယ်။ They are pairs of conjunctions that frame and link phrases and clauses that are grammatically identical. အသုံးများတဲ့ Cr.C တွေကတော့ either...or..., neither...nor..., both...and..., not only...but also.... တို့ဖြစ်ပါတယ်။ The most common Cr.C are either...or..., neither...nor..., both...and..., not only...but also.....
Example:
(a) The cats’ food needs to move either out of the kitchen or onto a higher surface that the dog can’t reach.
(b) Not only am I finished studying for English, but I’m also finished writing my history essay.
Hope you learn about conjunctions.
See you later.
