Egg Shortage in Major Supermarkets

Major supermarkets in Yangon are facing an egg shortage this weekend. Most City Mart outlets have run out of eggs since last week, and Makro also has no eggs to sell this weekend.

Initially, some form of avian influenza, bird flu, H1N1, or H5N1 was suspected. MI has just spoken to two of the major egg suppliers in Hmaw Be and Htaut Kyant, and they confirmed that, luckily, there was no such threat of bird flu in these prime chicken farms.

The owners told MI that the government has set the ceiling price for eggs at 380 Kyats. The suppliers cannot supply these major supermarkets at 380 less the supermarket margin, while the eggs on the roadside are being sold at 500 Kyats. As a result, the suppliers have stopped providing eggs to the major supermarkets, that has to keep their prices in check in line with the government-suggested price cap.

Unless the government reviews the price cap on chicken o**m pretty soon, the shoppers might not see the most staple item on their favourite supermarket shelves in the foreseeable future.
