Malaysia arrests 21 Myanmar women in raid on illegal karaoke bar

Malaysia’s Immigration Department announced that 21 Myanmar women were arrested during a raid on a karaoke bar operated by a Myanmar national.

Authorities raided the entertainment venue in Nilai, Negeri Sembilan, around midnight on September 6. The operation, which took about two weeks to prepare, resulted in the arrest of the female manager and 20 Myanmar women working there.

According to immigration officials, eight of the women had overstayed their visas, while the rest did not possess valid residence permits or work passes.

Video footage shared on social media showed that the bar had been locked from inside, forcing Malaysian authorities to cut through the metal shutters to enter.

The karaoke bar reportedly catered exclusively to Myanmar nationals and opened only on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Entry fees ranged from RM150 to RM200 per person, and the business had been operating for just over three months.

Acting President says disputes over multi-party democracy after the election could hinder progress, calls for political awareness to ensure stability and peace

Acting President and Chairman of the State Security and Peace Commission, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, said that Myanmar would continue along the path of a multi-party democracy chosen by the people after the upcoming December elections. He warned that if political forces only focus on disputes and confrontation, the country will not fully enjoy progress and development. Stability and political awareness, he emphasized, are essential for peace.

Speaking to accompanying media on his return flight from China on September 6, following a working visit from August 30 at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing highlighted the outcomes of his trip. He said he had met with business leaders in Tianjin and Chengdu, while Myanmar ministers held discussions to strengthen bilateral economic cooperation.

He stressed that Myanmar should not rely only on imports but must increase domestic production and exports. To achieve this, the country needs skilled human resources, which depend on a strong education system. “Education is the foundation. With better education, we will have more expertise, and only then can we effectively cooperate and compete,” he said.

During talks, Chinese businesses asked whether Myanmar could provide enough local workers. Senior General Min Aung Hlaing noted that according to Myanmar’s laws, jobs in foreign enterprises must be given to Myanmar citizens. Therefore, he said, Myanmar must develop its human resources and maintain stability to support future cooperation.

He concluded that Myanmar’s position will remain unchanged: the country must strive for peace, stability, and development through political awareness and practical efforts.

Myanmar eyes expanded China trade routes if border gates reopen

Myanmar’s Acting President and State Security and Peace Commission Chairman, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, said that reopening Myanmar-China border gates could greatly boost regional trade routes linking Myanmar’s northeast to Yunnan, Sichuan, Chongqing, Guangxi, and Nanning.

Speaking at the 2nd Myanmar-China Economic Cooperation Meeting in Chengdu on September 6, he stressed that border trade is vital for both nations’ economies. Of the eight official checkpoints along the border, only the Muse–Ruili gate is currently open due to armed group activity, which has hurt bilateral trade. He called for joint efforts to restore peace and stability so trade can resume.

He noted that China’s southwestern provinces are also suffering economically from the current disruptions. If border gates reopen, trade could expand beyond Yunnan into central and southern China, turning Myanmar into a key land bridge connecting China with ASEAN.

Senior General Min Aung Hlaing highlighted ongoing cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative and the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor, including rail, port, and power projects such as the Kyaukphyu deep-sea port and the China-Myanmar railway. He emphasized that improved transport links would not only benefit Myanmar and China but could also extend trade toward Russia and Europe.

The Acting President also underlined Myanmar’s strategic location between China, India, and Bangladesh, describing it as an important crossroads for South and Southeast Asia. He welcomed further Chinese investment in education, health, energy, agriculture, and infrastructure, and said Myanmar remains committed to regional frameworks such as RCEP and ASEAN-China trade agreements.

Myanmar mulls direct yuan investment to attract Chinese businesses

Myanmar is considering allowing direct investment in the country using the Chinese yuan to make it easier for Chinese companies to operate, Acting President and State Security and Peace Commission Chairman Senior General Min Aung Hlaing said. A decision is expected soon.

At the 2nd Myanmar-China Economic Cooperation Meeting in Chengdu on September 6, he called for the creation of a joint business group to accelerate investment and development. He explained that Myanmar is already implementing a yuan-kyat direct payment system for trade, border transactions, and investments, aiming to smooth the process for Chinese partners.

Senior General Min Aung Hlaing stressed that Myanmar aligns with many priority sectors under China’s Global Development Initiative, offering ample opportunities for investment. He said Myanmar is providing incentives such as tax breaks, tariff reductions, and guarantees to protect investors.

He added that Myanmar’s general election scheduled for December would enhance political stability, which in turn would expand economic opportunities. By combining Myanmar’s natural resources and workforce with Chinese investment, he said, both nations would see significant benefits.

Concluding, he invited Chinese businesses to invest with confidence, expressing hope that cooperation will bring stronger, long-term ties.

The meeting was attended by Myanmar officials, Chinese and Myanmar ambassadors, UMFCCI leaders, and over 120 Chinese entrepreneurs and experts from Yunnan, Sichuan, Chongqing, and Hunan.

Myanmar’s Acting President says nation faces pressure from major powers, vows to further strengthen ties with China

Myanmar is facing financial, political, and economic pressures from powerful nations, Acting President and Chairman of the State Security and Peace Commission Senior General Min Aung Hlaing said, adding that Myanmar-China relations, now at their strongest, will be further elevated.

He made the remarks at a press conference with Chinese media on September 6 in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. Senior General Min Aung Hlaing emphasized that Myanmar and China are close neighbours sharing over 1,300 miles of border and centuries of friendship, pledging deeper cooperation across all sectors.

He noted that many powerful countries use political, economic, financial, and even military pressure against others, citing U.S. sanctions on China as an example. Myanmar, too, has experienced such pressure. He welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping’s five-point Global Governance Initiative (GGI) presented at the SCO, which advocates equality, international law, cooperation, people-centered approaches, and practical results.

Marking 75 years of diplomatic ties, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing stressed that Myanmar and China are “family-like neighbours” and strategic partners, with mutual stability and development benefiting each other. He said current relations are at their highest level but will continue to be strengthened for greater cooperation.

He also expressed interest in China’s green development policies, saying Myanmar will adopt similar practices through Chinese collaboration. Concluding his week-long official visit to China, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing returned to Myanmar on the evening of September 6.
