Did we sell our house for a narrowboat life that is disappearing?

We came back to the boat planning a summer exploring the canals when they are at their best. For the second summer running there is not enough water in them, and locks are closing across the network.

Everyone who comes to this corner of Holland comes for the windmills. So did we.

What we didn't plan on was the city we booked as a base. We knew nothing about it. Turns out we'd made a mistake, though not the one you'd think.

Before we came to Utrecht, a friend who used to live in the Netherlands told us not to bother. "Don't waste your time," they said. "It's just a student town."

We'd already booked five nights. So we were stuck here whether it was worth it or not.

What we found was a canal running a full storey below the street, a cathedral with a hole where the middle used to be and what used to be one of the oldest and most important cities in the country.

We were told not to visit Utrecht. A friend told us not to bother because it was ‘just a student town’

Problem was, we’d already booked five nights. So we were stuck here whether it was worth it or not.

Norway is one of the most expensive countries on earth, so is a cruise the sensible way to see it? That's what we spent a week in the fjords trying to work out. Waterfalls, mountains, a suspension bridge we only just fit under, and the most expensive beer we've ever bought anywhere.

The new film is live. A week sailing the Norwegian fjords with Holland America, from Eidfjord and the Vøringsfossen waterfall to Bergen, where we bought the most expensive beer we've ever paid for anywhere in the world.

Norway is beautiful and genuinely eye-watering on the wallet, so we spent the week working out whether a cruise is the sensible way to see it.

We booked the cheapest cabin on the whole ship for a week through the Norwegian fjords, no window, bottom deck, on Holland America's MS Rotterdam.

It wasn't cheap either!
