A 39-year-old man from Birkirkara has been handed a one-year prison sentence, suspended for two years, after admitting to threatening his father, his brother, and another family member.
Matthew Schembri was arraigned before Magistrate Kevan Azzopardi on Wednesday following his arrest over a series of threats allegedly directed at his relatives.
The Court heard how on Tuesday at around 2:00 PM, Schembri’s father and brother filed a report with the Police Domestic Violence Unit. They described a turbulent family dynamic and recounted multiple threats made by the accused, including a chilling warning that he would "cut them to pieces."
Investigators were provided with voice notes and screenshots supporting the claims. The Court was informed that Schembri was living in a caravan in Mellieħa when the threats were made. The prosecution noted that he also faces separate, pending proceedings on similar charges.
Schembri was summoned to the St. Julian’s Police Station, where he was formally arrested and charged with making threats through electronic communications and threatening the victims.

According to the MET Office, this Sunday, September 13th, we are expecting a temperature of 28 degrees alongside some much-needed rain. To put that dry spell into perspective, the last time the Maltese Islands experienced any rain was way back on May 17th, when we got just 4mm!

Marsa Mayor Luke Farrugia is urging the public to be on high alert regarding a woman who is allegedly collecting funds by falsely claiming to represent Her Excellency Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca.

According to the Mayor, this collection is completely unauthorized. He strongly condemned the act, stating it is shameful for anyone to abuse the public's trust and generosity—especially by exploiting the name of someone dedicated to helping those in need. The matter has already been reported to the Police for further investigation.

H.E. Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, who does incredible work for vulnerable individuals through the Malta Trust Foundation and the Malta Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society, also issued a clear warning:

🗣️ "Any fundraising for projects I am involved in is done officially, never by unidentified individuals. Please do not let anyone deceive you."

A shocking development in Egypt today as 39-year-old television presenter Sarah Khalifa—best known for hosting the crime-focused program Mission Impossible—has been sentenced to death by hanging alongside 11 other individuals. 📺⚖️

According to state-owned reports, the group was convicted of forming a criminal gang to import drug-making ingredients for distribution, as well as illegally possessing fi****ms and munitions. 🛑

Key details of the case:
🔹 Khalifa has firmly denied all charges, and her lawyer has confirmed they will be appealing the death sentence.
🔹 In the same case, 9 fellow defendants were sentenced to life in prison, while 7 others were completely acquitted.
🔹 The verdict was initially announced last month but was only finalized recently after the court received a religious opinion from the Grand M***i of Egypt—a strict legal requirement for death penalty cases in the country. 📜🇪🇬
