🔍 An explosion at the Lourdes fireworks factory in the Ta' Qadi area of Naxxar, near Salina, shook nearby buildings and shattered windows.

No people were killed. A nearby farmer and his son were injured. Several animals were injured and killed in the blast, including race horses, and concerns were raised over the contamination of food and feed.

“Hinges and hooks flew off the doors, windows burst open, and anything on the windowsill was destroyed. My husband and I had minor scratches on our arms from the debris. We also had our boundary wall dislodged,” one resident told Amphora Media.

This is not the first time the site has blown up. And in the years since the last explosion, the factory has been built partly without sanction, expanded with the regulator's approval, and supported by public money to improve safety.

🇺🇸🇲🇹Malta-based companies belonging to US companies such as Crocs, Abbott, Thermo Fisher, and S&P Global have been named in a New York Times investigation into billion-dollar tax avoidance.

A New York Times review of securities filings from nearly 500 companies showed that they avoided at least $40 billion in taxes by attributing hundreds of billions of dollars in earnings to low- or no-tax foreign jurisdictions such as Malta, Cyprus, Bermuda, Switzerland, and the Cayman Islands.

“A favourite destination was the tiny Mediterranean island of Malta,” the NYT piece reads.

Who guessed it best? 🤔📊

Of the three final pre-election surveys, Malta Today’s came closest to calling the split between the two main parties and the gap between them, but it leaned too heavily on third parties and badly missed the turnout.

The Times of Malta made a very accurate prediction of the turnout. The newspaper and Vincent Marmara’s surveys predicted a much more favourable outcome for the PL than what materialised

🗳️ Malta's third parties edged up to 3.55% in the 2026 General Election, their best showing in years. But the gain came almost entirely from one source: Arnold Cassola's new party, Momentum.

That surge appears to have come at the expense of ADPD. Malta's longest-running third party slipped to 1.31% of the vote.

Cassola did the heavy lifting, scoring 795 first-count votes in the 10th district, nearly double the 427 he managed there last time 📈 and another 722 in the 9th. Mark Philip Camilleri Gambin also performed well in the 11th, taking 532 first-count votes.

Behind them, Aħwa Maltin landed on 0.60% and Imperium Europa on just 167 votes, six more than every independent candidate combined.

Malta's election is over, Robert Abela’s Labour Party has secured another term. While the PL has won by an estimated 18,000 votes; Borg has reduced the gap from 39,000 votes in 2022.

But what actually shaped the vote?

Our full breakdown unpacks the issues:

🟠 Stability, economy and energy: Abela made stability and experience a key focus of his campaign, championing the country’s current economic performance, drawing a distinction with Borg’s relative inexperience, who is less than a year into his tenure as PN leader.

🟠 Traffic: Congestion is costing the economy €770M a year and climbing. Abela campaigned on a €2.8 billion light rail line; Borg staked his credibility on a mass-transport system, saying gov’t has failed to deliver on previous promises.

🟠 Tourism, population & migration: A population past 575,000 and doubling tourist numbers have strained local infrastructure; but the parties focused on redistributing revenue, not curbing growth.

🟠 The environment: A major concern for residents, yet Malta still lags most of the EU. Both parties pledged to keep hunting and trapping despite court rulings.

🟠Corruption, crime and justice were largely sidelined, even with the Vitals case and other magisterial inquiries still ongoing.

🗳️ Malta's voter turnout climbs to 87.4%, or 311,949 out of 356,832 eligible voters.

That reverses a downward trend, up from a decades-low 85.6% in 2022, with turnout rising across every district in Malta and Gozo.

Malta will be focused on the national result, but the next five years will be shaped by a handful of key battleground district:

Gozo (13th): PN leader Alex Borg up against three government ministers

4th & 5th: Traditional Labour strongholds where the PN could claw back a second seat if they reached a 33% threshold

8th & 12th: Districts significantly impacted by the relocation of 24,000+ voters into new districts in 2025.
