The first concrete ideas towards a publication for the English Department at the University of Malta reach back to 2007. Students needed a place to write and be read outside a classroom setting, hence the establishment of TEXT! The project was initiated in print form in August 2009, then moved onto an online platform in March 2010 for the second edition. In short, this journal offers a broader sen

Welcome to DESA’s first TEXT writing Competition!

The theme for this competition is Unfinished Work.
If you have a story or poem that is unfinished – now is the chance to show it off!
The more unfinished – the better!
Deadline is 12th of October.

Details:
This competition welcomes prose and poetry!
The winners will be announced 26th October.
The prize is some time one on one tutoring with one of our professors to help you finish the work!
Prose includes a word limit of 2000 words.
Poetry includes a line limit of 50 lines.

Despite the high word limit, please note that DESA will happily accept very short pieces of texts.

Merry Christmas Eve! Welcome to the last day of Textmas! Today, we recommend a twist on an old classic: 'The Muppet Christmas Carol'.

Starring Micheal Caine as Ebenezer Scrooge, this film retells the famous tale as it stars the Muppets in arguably one of the most true-to-source rendition of Dickens' famous Christmas tale. This classic christmas film was actually the first Muppets media made since the passing of the famous Muppeter, Jim Henson.

For day 11 of Textmas, we recommend episode 10 of the fourth season of the TV series 'Lost'.

One of the most critically acclaimed episodes of the series 'Lost'. It explores Desmond as his mind jumps between two points in time. His constant mental time jumps cause great danger to him, and the only way to save himself is to connect with an old flame on Christmas Eve.

For Day 10 of Textmas, we recommend the anime film 'Tokyo Godfathers'.

This tragicomic anime film follows three homeless people as they find a lost baby and try to take care of it during Christmas time. It is a sweet and sombre tale of coincidence and found family as these people try their best in a difficult time.

Day 8 of TEXTmas!

One of the reversal episodes of the show where we see the side of “Woman Seeking Man”. While the episode is not necessarily a Christmas tale it plays around with the Santa Claus persona in a postmodern way.

Day 8 of TEXTmas! Today's recommendation is the film 'Smoke' by Wayne Wang and Paul Auster.

Inspired by Paul Auster’s short story named “Auggie Wren’s Christmas Story” the movie can be seen as Paul Auster’s playful way of addressing the prior fictional events or just a bunch of stories mingling together in a to***co shop in Brooklyn.

Day 7 of Textmas!

Today, we have the poem 'A Visit from Saint Nicholas. Written by poet Clement Clarke Moore, this poem is routinely referred to as "The Night Before Christmas" and "'Twas the Night Before Christmas" from its first line.

The poem has been called "arguably the best-known verses ever written by an American" and is largely responsible for some of the conceptions of Santa Claus from the mid-19th century to today.

An almost hour long work by the video essayist and internet personality hbomberguy tackling the political discourse surrounding the notion of The War on Christmas.
