In the pre‑dawn quiet of 29 December 1984, a bold theft shook Malta’s cultural world. In St John’s Co‑Cathedral in Valletta, two men posing as workmen hung a chain at the entrance of the gallery housing St Jerome Writing by Caravaggio and posted a sign reading “Work in Progress”. Then they cut the great canvas from its frame and slipped away into the night.

The painting, executed circa 1607‑08 during Caravaggio’s Maltese sojourn, depicts the saint writing by candlelight and is one of the island’s masterpieces by the artist.

Immediately, the cultural and security alarms rang. The theft was described as the largest church‑art theft in Malta’s history.

For nearly two years the painting was presumed lost. Then in late 1986 a dramatic turn occurred. Marius J. Zerafa, then Director of Museums, began receiving clandestine phone calls from someone identifying themselves as “Merisi” (a nod to the painter’s surname). The caller sent a Polaroid photo of the stolen painting and demanded a ransom of Lm 500,000.

Negotiations dragged on while the authorities organised surveillance and planning. Eventually, on 4 August 1987, a police operation located the painting in a house in Marsascala, after having followed leads to a shoe‑factory in Marsa and monitored the criminals’ movements.

The painting was retrieved, though not unscathed: it had been cut from its frame, rolled, and suffered damage in the canvas and paint layer.

Following the recovery, the painting underwent restoration at the Istituto Centrale di Restauro in Rome, then was returned to its rightful place in the cathedral’s Oratory of the Italian Langue. Electronic security systems were installed to ensure its protection.

This daring heist and its unfolding drama — a priest negotiating with thieves, police hovering in helicopters, a masterpiece hanging in limbo — not only captivated Malta but became emblematic of the vulnerabilities of cultural heritage. Over forty years on, the story continues to inspire books, documentaries and even a film.

Today, 'St Jerome Writing' remains a hush‑worthy presence in St John’s Co‑Cathedral: a painting that was lost, found, restored — and now, more than ever, vigilantly guarded.

𝗕𝗶𝘇𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗮
An Enchanting Exploration of Malta’s Strangest Secrets

In 𝗕𝗶𝘇𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗮, authors Oliver Gatt and Fiona Vella take readers on an unforgettable journey through the hidden, the strange, and the wonderfully weird corners of the Maltese Islands. Far from a conventional guidebook, this captivating volume, now in its 5th edition, offers a fresh perspective on a place many think they already know.

The book is a beautifully curated blend of historical oddities, architectural curiosities, and local legends—many of which are rarely found in mainstream narratives. From mysterious subterranean caves to abandoned mansions, peculiar street art to strange religious relics, Bizarre Malta is a treasure trove of stories that surprise, amuse, and occasionally unsettle.

The layout is sleek and inviting, making it easy to dip in and out or read cover to cover. Each entry feels like a hidden doorway, leading into a different facet of Maltese culture—often quirky, sometimes eerie, always fascinating.

One of the book’s most impressive achievements is its ability to make readers, locals and tourists alike, see Malta with new eyes.

Even lifelong residents are likely to discover something they never knew existed or had walked past without a second glance. It rekindles a sense of curiosity and appreciation for the island’s layered and sometimes surreal history.

Ultimately, 𝗕𝗶𝘇𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗮 is more than a book—it’s an experience. It invites exploration, sparks conversations, and challenges us to look beyond the postcard-perfect beaches and baroque cathedrals. For anyone interested in Malta’s offbeat side, this is an essential addition to the bookshelf.

A delightfully strange and deeply engaging read that uncovers the forgotten and the fantastical. 𝗕𝗶𝘇𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗲 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗮 is a brilliant reminder that every place has its secrets—if you know where to look.

Reading full books provides numerous benefits, such as fostering a deeper understanding of complex topics, improving critical thinking, and enhancing memory, which is increasingly important as many students feel they regret not reading more whole books.
