Supermarine Spitfire FR. XIVe RM927, currently on the French register as F-AYXX, has suffered a minor incident when taxiing in following a landing at Bicarosse Airport. The aircraft taxied onto soft ground leading to a concrete drain, which were not clearly marked. This led to the aircraft nosing over, with an inevitable prop-strike. The pilot was unhurt, and the aircraft is currently being evaluated in order to initiate repairs.

Today in Aviation: 01.06.1981 - First Flight Short 360

Following the same design concept as the Short Skyvan, the Short 360 was a larger commuter aircraft capable of seating up to 39 passengers in an unpressurised cabin. Capable of operating from runways as short as 1,400m, the Short 360 opened up air routes to many communities around the world.

Today in Aviation: 01.06.1939 - First Flight Fw-190

Designed by Kurt Tank in complete contrast to many other designs favouring inline engines for fighters, the Fw-190 was powered by a BMW801 radial, and from the outset acknowledged the need for a greater field of vision for the pilot.

The aircraft's appearance over France in 1941, initially dismissed as refurbished ex-French P-36s, was a shock as the new fighter outclassed the Spitfire Mk.V, and it was only with the arrival of the Spitfire Mk. IX that the Allies had a fighter that could take the Fw-190 on on equal terms.

Fast, manouverable and heavily armed, the aircraft proved effective as a day and night-fighter, a fighter-bomber, and a ground-attack fighter. The aircraft, however, lost its edge at higher altitudes, which eventually led to the 'long-nose' FW-190D, powered by the inline Junker Jumo 213, and the ultimate Ta-152, capable of very high speed at medium-to-high altitudes, but too late to have any effect on the war's outcome.

The US has suspended some sales of critical US technologies to China, including CFM LEAP-1C engines, which power China’s Comac C919 jets, reportedly in response to Chinese curtails on mineral exports to the USA. The move comes exactly two years after the aircraft entered commercial service.

With the LEAP-1C being the only powerplant available for the C919, this will lead to the aircraft currently being produced to be completed but remaining engineless, but in the longer-term, could push China to accelerate domestic development of aircraft engines.
